Thanks for posting that, Fred! I'd heard of a lot of those songs, but this is the first time I'd ever heard even snippets of most of them! As an aside, is it me, or does Bob Harris sound like he has a bad cold?

In 1992 I was in Amsterdam, Holland singing at The Netherlands Opera, and I came across a record dealer in town whose shop was full of bootlegs of The Beatles. One of those bootlegs I picked up was on a label called "Chapter One - Digital recordings". It is a double CD entitled "The Beatles - Unheard Melodies, The Songs The Beatles Gave Away". The Tracks on the CD's are as follows; CD 1 1) The Beatles: I'll Be On My Way (BBC Rec. 4/63 2) Billy J. Kramer: I'll Be On My Way (Rec. 5/63) 3) John Lennon: Bad To Me (Demo rec. 5/63) 4) Billy J. Kramer: Bad To Me (from Ed Sullivan Show 1964) 5) Tommy Quickly: Tip Of My Tongue (rec. 8/63) 6) The Quarrymen: Hello Little Girl (Reh. Tape 5/60) 7) Gerry & Pacemakers: Hello Little Girl (unreleased from 1/63) 8) The Fourmost:Hello Little Girl (rel. 9/63) 9) The Beatles: Love Of The Loved (Decca Aud. 1/62) 10) Cilla Black: Love Of The Loved (rel. 10/63) 11) Billy J. Kramer: I'll Keep You Satisfied (rel. 11/63) 12) John Lennon: I'm In Love (Demo rec. 7/63) 13) The Fourmost: I'm In Love (rel. 12/63) 14) Peter & Gordon: A World Without Love (rel. 3/64) 15) Paul McCartney: One And One is Two (Demo rec. 3/64) 16) Mike Shannon: One And One is Two (rel. 5/64) 17) Peter & Gordon: Nobody I Know: (rel. 6/64) 18) The Beatles: Like Dreamers Do: (Decca Aud. 1/62) 19) The Applejacks: Like Dreamers Do: (rel. 6/64) 20) Cilla Black: It's For You (rel. 8/64) 21) Peter & Gordon: I Don't Want To See You Again (rel. 8/64) 22) Billy J. Kramer: From A Window (rel. 7/64) 23) The Beatles: That Means A Lot (Take 23 Abbey Rd Stud., 3/65)
CD2 1) The Beatles: That Means A Lot (Take 2 Abbey Rd Stud. 2/65) 2) P.J. Proby: That Means A Lot (rel. 9/65) 3) Peter & Gordon: Woman (rel. 2/66) 4) George Martin Orchestra: Love In The Open Air (rel. 11/66) 5) The Beatles: Catswalk (reh. tape from Cavern 1962) 6) The Chris Barber Jazz Band: Catcall (rel. 8/67) 7) Paul McCartney: Step Inside Love (Demo late 1967) 8) Cilla Black: Step Inside Love (rel. 2/68) 9) The Black Dyke Mills Band: Thingumybob (rel. 8/68) 10) The Beatles: Sour Milk Sea (WA reh. 5/68) 11) Jackie Lomax: Sour Milk Sea (rel. 8/68) 12) Cream: Badge (rel. 3/69) 13) Paul McCartney: Goodbye (Demo rec. late 1968) 14) Mary Hopkin: Goodbye (rel. 4/69) 15) The Beatles: Penina (LIB reh. 1/69) 16) Jotta Herre: Penina (rel. 4/69) 17) Carlos Mendes: Penina (rel. 4/69) 18) Paul McCartney: Come & Get It (Demo rec. 7/69) 19) Badfinger: Come & Get It (rel. 12/69) 20) Roger Cook & Dudley Moore: L.S. Bumble Bee (rel. 7/67)
All of the songs above are mentioned on the current BBC program along with interviews from Paul, George, and G. Martin commenting on the songs (which are not on the CD). I have never talked with anyone else who said they had this bootleg nor have I seen it available anywhere since. I'd be curious if anyone out there on the boards has this bootleg as well, as it seems to be a rare item.

Is there anyone else who feels that "The Songs The Beatles Gave Away" - an expression which has been in use since the early 60s - is something of a misnomer? For sure they decided not to record most of them, but they hardly gave them away: there was reasonable payback on most of them.

Lowbasso, what the heck is "Penina"? They tell the story of "Penina" in the radio show. As I recall, it was the result of a drunken night.

I also own "The Beatles - Unheard Melodies, The Songs The Beatles Gave Away". I'm curious where you found your copy. I got mine in Amsterdam, and though I live in The States, I have never seen it listed or available by American bootleggers.
