Did I miss Round 4? This is a tough one as both of these sides are very enjoyable pop/rock with a nice amount of musical variety. The better side of each LP and sides I have listened to a lot. Again I'll mention that the live versions on WINGS OVER AMERICA of the V&M stuff is better and would be a win for RINGO. However, this is the studio so I have to look (& listen) closely. (break to listen) Well OK I've YouTubed several of the songs I was questionable about. I'm going to go with Ringo. All 4 Beatles make a contribution and there are 3 of them on "I'm The Greatest" so that gives it a little something extra.

This is a tough one. One of Ringo's best sides versus a charming McCartney side that captures his show biz flair and imaginative, playful sound-scapes. I'm gonna have to think about this one before I vote.

Another one close on points, but I have to go with Ringo- two number ones, songs penned by three Beatles, musicians on this side include all four beatles with three on one cut. Historically- it would have been great and appropriate if John also appeared with Paul on You're Sixteen. Imagine them playing duel kazoos- how anti-climatic would that have been?

"You Gave Me The Answer" and "Magneto and Titanium Man" cost V&M-1 my vote as I love the other songs on that Side but don't care for those two. "You Gave Me The Answer" is catchy but why? Why did we need another fake 1930's song after "When I'm 64?" Does Paul really think that the majority of fans want these mock-oldies songs? One was more than enough.
RINGO-1 is very good, a lot of fun.

Years ago (early 80s), when the children were young, I played Venus & Mars one fine day, for "old times sake". I never liked the album much, but sometimes you just want to check that it was as weak as you remember. The children (age between 7 and 11) ran around the house putting their fingers into their mouths and making "heaving" noises. Then I found my wife in the bedroom cringing and doing the same thing. I mean, I don't like the bloody thing either - but what a reaction. (Yes, I'm exaggerating a bit: my wife really just sighed, and said it was crap. But the kids' reaction was like I said!) The kids said "Dad, put on London Calling. That's good!" They were right. I did. Now, what can I say new about Ringo, side 1? You'll remember I tick 3/5 songs here: Greatest, Have You Seen, and Raymond. I don't know about new, but I'll tell you one thing that appeals to me about Ringo: it's totally unpretentious. One or two of the songs drag a bit for me, but there's nothing try-hard about the album. It feels natural. Thanks Ringo (not forgetting your three brothers too). I have a story about the Ringo album: in 1974 I had a relationship with a very intelligent and confident woman. She was very into folk music, and knew the scene here very well. I was taken to many pubs/bars/cafes where that sort of music was played live. So you get the idea - she was not into rock n roll, pop, rock: none of the stuff I liked. But she loved Ringo! She couldn't explain why, but she always liked to hear the album. Odd, but true. McCabe

No offense, but all that proves is that they have no taste. ;D And really, kids tend to do that all the time -- even at some exceptional older stuff. VENUS AND MARS remains near the top of my favorite Macca albums.

Venus and Mars Side 1.
First, side 1 of Ringo is about as good as Ringo gets. "I'm the Greatest," "Photograph," and "Sunshine..." are three of my favorite tracks by Starr (sure I'm far from alone there). However, the Randy Newman song doesn't grab me and "You're Sixteen" was novelty of sorts and hasn't aged well, so to speak.
Just one mark against Ringo clinches this because I think side 1 of Venus and Mars is near perfect. I hadn't considered this much before, but Beatlefan recently included an article about the album that caused me to re-appraise it. And after some listens, I think it's outstanding.
The title track and "Rock Show," though probably better on WOA, are just fine here. Love the imagery.
"Love in Song" -- Beatlesque and one of the hidden gems for Paul. Edit: listening to this again and talking about McCartney II, I wonder if this song has some connection to "One of These Days"? Not sure why I think that after looking at both lyrics -- but it's in the lines "I can see the places that we used to go to now..." And I think both songs are about his relationship with John Lennon to some degree.
"You Gave Me the Answer" -- yes, it continues what Paul started with the Beatles ("Honey Pie" and "Your Mother...") but it's the best of the bunch and a great tune regardless of that. (Remember George had a soft spot for this type of song as well -- except he would only cover them, for the most part, and not write in that style.)
"Magneto and Titanium Man" -- LOVE THIS SONG. When it comes to, "Well there she were/and to my despair/she's a five-star criminal/breaking the code" -- that's one of the great Macca and Wings moments. Listen to him sing that, then on to the end. It's a joy.
"Letting Go" -- always thought this was Lennonsesque (POB) ala "Let me Roll It." Cool, heavy track. That bass! "Aaaah...."

"Love in Song" -- Beatlesque and one of the hidden gems for Paul. This song made me pause before I voted for RINGO-1. "Love In Song" is a great song. It is suitably obscure too which makes it fun to hear.

I voted for Venus and Mars S-1
I love every song on this side except for You Gave Me the Answer, not that it's a bad song but I just wish Paul stuck Junior's Farm there instead, to keep the album as rock as possible. The only other issue I have is that the production has always been muddy or it hasn't been mixed well, really looking forward to the new remaster of this. The WOA versions blow all these album versions away.
Oh yeah and Love in Song is just a brilliant ballad, love the melody and Paul's singing here.
Onto Ringo, I am not a big Ringo fan although there are a couple of nice pop tunes here.

I finally voted for Ringo, mostly because I don't want to see Ringo go down without a fight. And also because of the moving version of "Photograph" that Ringo sang at the George Harrison memorial concert, which added poignancy to the lyrics ".... and all I've got is a photograph / and I realize you're not coming back anymore . . . "

Man ace, I want to change my vote now from Ringo to Paul! I totally respect your opinion but it reminded me that I personally thought that Ringo was incredibly lazy at The Concert For George and just did two songs he already does for every single Ringo and the All-Starrs concert!

After reading your comment about "Love in Song," I knew you would come around! ;D That's OK. Let's plan on taking Venus and Mars Side 1 to the top. I'm not sure I've ever been so excited about a solo side.

I know. You always think Ringo is lazy. But at least he has new albums out pretty regularly, makes the TV show circuits, and performs live. And he is 70, after all. I thought Ringo doing PHOTOGRAPH for George was very poignant, even if overly familiar. I had no need for HONEY DON'T, but what else could Ringo really sing with some kind of connection to George?

Ah, you must be one of those people who prefer The Clash's Sandinista! to their London Calling. Fair enough - de gustibus non est disputandum. McCabe PS No need to reply. That would give the impression that you just want to have the last word - and that couldn't be true, eh Joe?

I very rarely agree with Mr Self: his musical tastes, and general attitudes to life, religion and politics differ substantially from my own (though we both strongly admire For No One). And that doesn't matter at all. But I totally agree with the quoted sentiment. How on earth V&M 1 could be beating Ringo 1 is totally beyond my ken! McCabe

I thought Ringo Starr, not Gary Brooker, should have sung "Old Brown Shoe." If Ringo sang it in that same mournful voice that he sang "Matchbox" with, that would have been very, very amazing(and rocking). Ringo was a Beatle, let Ringo sing a George Beatle song. Let Brooker sing "Blood From A Clone" or some other solo song. I will always envision "Photograph" as a wonderfully poignant break-up song, nothing to do with a good buddy dying. "I want you here to have and hold, As the years go by and we grow old and grey." I don't want to envision Ringo and George having each other and holding each other as they grow old and grey.

As I stated way back at the beginning, these are two sides I enjoy listening to a lot. I am not surprised that it is close and I will not be disappointed in whatever the final vote is.
And again I'll say that I would pick RAM 2 over either of these sides!
