Well, any hopes that Kanye would have brought out a tougher Paul have been dashed with the opposite - Paul helping KW on a schmaltzy, whimpy, and overly auto-tuned song. I can't even hear Paul in the background. Not my cup of tea. I'm sure this generation of music lovers will think it's equal to anything Paul has ever done and KW will probably think it's better than anything in the McCartney canon. www.billboard.com/articles/columns/the-juice/6422451/kanye-west-drops-new-single-only-one

This was posted on Facebook and I'm listening to the song. You're right, you can't really hear Paul in the background. Happy New Year!

When I logged onto my computer this morning, my nephew had sent me a link to this song, joking that he did not want to get my new year off to a bad start. Well, when I saw that it was a Kanye West song, I immediately deleted it and did not listen, because I have seen and heard Kanye and I don't like him one bit personally or "professionally", and I don't want to listen by choice...
... but then I came to realize that this song my nephew was sending me is one of those collaborations with Paul McCartney. So I decided to read online comments about it first. If Paul was featured more vocally on this song, and thus was more prominent on it other than playing piano, I would have felt more obligated to give it a listen. I am a Beatles/Solo completist when it comes to their proper individual albums, or if they feature substantially on vocals with someone else; but I don't feel inclined to hearing others' songs (especially someone I know I don't like, such as Kanye) that one of the Fabs plays an instrument on. So, I will not be listening to this one by choice. If/when there is more of a vocal collaboration featuring Paul that is released (and I'm presuming the two of them have done more than just this), I will play it.

Paul plays the keyboard all the way through this. It's like a duet with Kanye on vocals and Paul on the electric piano. It's a little reminiscent of the keys on London Town.
I had to pick it up on iTunes.
Paul gets credit as co-writer, along with Kanye and Kirby Lauryen.

Not because it is a rap artist, but because it is too much of a reach IMO. That being said, I haven't heard it yet. The link didn't work.

Basically it's just Paul ad-libbing a keyboard, accompanying Kanye's singing. It's pretty old school. No rap.

I thought that Paul might be playing an instrument/co-writer and not singing backing vocals. The song is ok, not horrible but yet not really outstanding. Based upon what I heard from the hype, the song could have been worse.

The only other song I know by him is the (I ain't saying she's a) Gold Digger song, with Jamie Foxx singing background.

If you don't like this one, there will be more from them
It will be the first publicly available recording from what has become a prolific musical collaboration between these two legendary artists. Here is the full statement:
Kanye West Releases "Only One," First Single From Forthcoming Solo Album & First Reveal Of Several Musical Collaborations With Paul McCartney To Come
NEW YORK, Jan. 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today - New Years Day, 2015 - one of the most powerful and unexpected music collaborations in modern history has been released exclusively on the iTunes music store: "Only One." The single features the undeniable talent of two musical and cultural icons: Kanye West and Paul McCartney (http://smarturl.it/Only1).
It will be the first publicly available recording from what has become a prolific musical collaboration between these two legendary artists. In early 2014, Paul McCartney and Kanye West first began working together in a small bungalow in Los Angeles. The process that would result in "Only One" began with a simple brainstorming session between the two: With McCartney improvising on the keyboards and Kanye vocally sketching and shaping ideas in a stream-of-consciousness riff.
When they played back the recording afterward, something remarkable happened. Kanye sat there with his family, holding his daughter North on his lap, and listened to his vocals, singing, "Hello, my only one . . . " And in that moment, not only could he not recall having sung those words, but he realized that perhaps the words had never really come from him. The process of artistic creation is one that does not involve thinking, but often channeling. And he understood in that moment that his late mother, Dr. Donda West, who was also his mentor, confidante, and best friend, had spoken through him that day. "My mom was singing to me, and through me to my daughter," he said, astonished. The small group in the room kept listening: "Hello my Only One…just like the morning sun…you'll keep on rising till the sky knows your name."
To some, Kanye's insight didn't immediately register. But then he explained: The name Kanye, which his mother had chosen, means "only one." And then it dawned on everyone there: Something powerful and undeniable had occurred through the power of music and of letting go. A message had been passed down through generations. And so it is that there was only one song that could be released first from this groundbreaking collaboration: "Only One," an anthem of positive reflection, hopefulness and joyous celebration to usher in a New Year.
There is only one you. There is only one life. And there is only one 2015. "Only One" is available exclusively on the iTunes music store in 119 countries exclusively for one week. Enjoy. And Happy New Year.
I like the song and can't wait to hear more from them.

I had to pick it up on iTunes. Paul gets credit as co-writer, along with Kanye and Kirby Lauryen. The article I posted made no mention of Paul as a keyboardist, just Paul as a backup singer. If he did play the keyboards, I'm glad that he had a much more predominate role. Nevertheless, I don't mind mellow songs if the melody and hook are quite outstanding. Without them, mellow songs are just pap. That's why I'm off on Ebony and Ivory and much of Paul's mellow work. Thus, to my ears, this new song is pablum to my ears.

From iTunes Editors' Notes on the song: Two titans join forces on "Only One".... ...finds McCartney playing keyboard melody as West-channeling the spirit of his late mother, Dr Donna West- delivers a powerful message of hope and joy to his daughter.

I think I might have had more interest in listening to it if it had featured Paul channelling John Lennon.

Well, I listened to it - I like the words! The music isn't bad - but the harmony vocals are somewhat off-key. :-p. It may take more than one listen to grow on me....

This is huge! This starts Phase IV of Macca's career: Cool Hip Hop Oldster!
Paul was recently quoted as saying that Jay Z and Kanye West are true poets as to their lyrics and ROLLING STONE screamed the headlines in mid-December that Paul is trying to write a protest song in support of Eric Gardner and Michael Brown and against the NYPD! We are about to have another classic from Macca like "Freedom" was!
Cynics are saying that Paul had to turn to African American musical superstars to regain No. 1 in the early 1980's first with Stevie Wonder("Ebony And Ivory" massive #1) and then Michael Jackson("Say Say Say" an even bigger #1) and while I was cynical of Paul's early 1980's moves(come on, "The Girl Is Mine," really, f_ck_ng really?!), this is different with Kanye!
Paul is once and for all going to prove who the real Political Beatle was by teaming up with Kanye and maybe Jay Z with true music on social justice!
I applaud Paul's move here! His tinkering with the Nirvana boys last year was just Dave Grohl's wet dream come true!

Could be. This song is #3 on the iTunes singles chart. We'll see when Billboard comes out, but coattails or not, Paul has finally achieved what we know he has longed for....another U.S. Top Ten single (and possibly #1 hit)! Too bad he can't do it on his own.....or with him actually on lead vocals.

Just listened to the full song on Mr. West's website. Paul is featured prominently in the song....well, as least as far as the extended electronic keyboard ending that he purportedly plays. It's kind of like the unholy child born of "With a Little Luck" and "Secret Friend".

If it gets to #1, I would consider it a kw #1; not a Paul #1 . Now, that's not to say that some of the other songs we will be hearing won't be Paul (co-featuring kw)... I'm sure others will be "Macca Singles". However, this one is kanye's.

However, Paul has officially been given a co-credit for the recorded performance; so, according to Billboard rules as I understand them, I would think that theman is correct and McCartney will be recognised when charts are assembled.

Finally got to hear it. Not too bad, pretty simple. Hate the auto-tune though, and if Paul gets a co-credit on this like a duet, then I think that is a bit of a lark, as it would open the flood gates of redefining "token" appearances on singles. I guess if you watched the "live" performance and see Paul pretty much adding the main instrument as well as some small scale backing vocals, you might argue it as a "joint" effort if not a true "duet".

Words out, being on this record is going to make McCartney famous. Paul Will Be FamousWhen he walks into a room now, it's going to be like Al Roker walked in. Or better yet, like Al Bundy. Hell, it'll be like a Beatle walked in.

Of course, he will be "recognized". This has nothing to do with being a duet or if it's primarily a Kanye song (which it is as he is the lead vocalist). The song is listed as "featuring Paul McCartney". Paul is one of the co-writers as well. Put it this way, if this song was nominated for a Grammy, Kanye and Paul will be accepting the award, not just Kanye. As the press release says, it is a "musical collaboration".

I'm agreeing with you. When the song charts on Billboard, it will be jointly attributed to Kanye West and Paul McCartney. Maybe recognised was an inexact term to use. I don't think the song writing comes into it.

I don't think the song writing comes into it. Yes, I know we are on the same page. Nowadays, the charts are littered with songs that have other artists prominately listed as "featured" or ""with". When these songs chart or win an award such as a Grammy, all artists are recognized. Sure, the "lead" artist may get more love, but when you are listed in the "main credits", it counts.
