I think with Paul that his inspiration for lyrics often comes from the "Duran Duran" school of song writing. In other words as long as the words sound right in the context of the song then that will do. He often talks of "Jet" as being about a puppy and yet the lyrics are almost nonsensical. Blackbird's lyrics if they were about Cilla Black are very obscure. I could also point out that her real name is "Prescilla White" the same colour as the cover of the album. Maybe there was something subconscious going on. Only Paul would be able to tell us if someone asked and maybe he doesn't remember it accurately any more Still it's a great song and a great album.

Interesting. I always doubted the connection of "Blackbird" to the Civil Rights Movement simply because Paul wasn't shouting that in 1968 and why would he hide it? He just got a ton of press for the LSD flap in 1967(to the amusement and annoyance of John and George) and the Beatles tended to speak their minds.
However, wasn't there a recent YouTube video or something where Paul is telling Donovan in 1968 that the song was about Black empowerment so that would be a pretty valid source if my memory is right. If Cilla Black's nickname was Blackbird that clearly could have been an influence on Paul, among other influences. Something like that could have been the germ of the idea but goes onto something bigger.

The 'Blackbird'/Civil Rights connection by Paul is obviously poppy-cock. He started telling this story in -- what? -- 1990, or something? I guess by then he felt safe enough from right-wingers in the US to tell it.
I mean, I guess we can't rule out a subconscious connection, but my guess is that Paul's brain jumped randomly to the animal 'blackbird' in the midst of composing. I mean, he put frickin' bird sounds on the record...

I cannot tell a lie. Panther does not know what he is talking about, as usual. If you listen to this clip with Paul and Donovan, at around the 2:30 mark, Paul starts to play Blackbird. Around the 4 minute mark, about 4:06-ish, he says he wrote Blackbird after reading about riots ( after laughing that he did not write it about Diana Ross:)
Oh, and yeah, he put bird sounds on the record, so clearly it must be about a bird. Hmmm, John Lennon put bird sounds on "Across the Universe", so it must be about...oh never mind.

Paul in "Actually-Told-a-Legit-Songwriting-Story" shocker!
Next, we'll find out "Hold Me Tight" was actually inspired by a particularly good screwdriver he had in 1962.
But in all seriousness, it's good to learn this, thanks.

Paul and Diana Ross should actually try getting together. At least there wouldn't be any ego involved...

And they both have thin, tinny voices.
