I need to find this MOJO as well as the UNCUT with Hari on the cover. Both have music c.d.'s attached. In my little town neither of these magazines are available. I could buy lots of porn magazines(if I was so inclined but I am not) but I cannot get music magazines here beyond RS.

Perhaps you can keep us all posted John. They are bound to come out with the out-take photos from the Two Virgins photo shoot...

Isn't the point to have less "articles" on, but some can be tastefully done at best?

We have a small Waldenbooks but its magazines are limited, not like at the bigger stores in the suburbs.

Thanks for the heads-up. Need to head out to Borders or Barnes and Noble to get a copy. I just got the Uncut George Harrison issue the other night. If you haven't got that, don't wait. They're going quickly. One store I went to had two magazines without CDs.

Just got a copy of the Mojo White Album at Virgin Records in NYC. The best part it's a two part article, which means two free CD's for each magazine with different music artists performing their versions of the White Album songs. Part two will be out in September. Will be interesting to see who does 'Revolution 9'. www.mojo4music.com/blog/whitealbum.shtml

I have the George Uncut. Some interesting covers -- too many standard oldies I already have. It would have been interesting to dig deeper into Chuck Berry or Everly Bros rarities.
We're a month behind on these mags in the U.S. (other than Virgin stores). So is the White Album issue the current UK edition, and we'll get in at Borders, etc. in Sept.? I went to a Barnes and Noble, and the newest issue was a Seattle Sub Pop cover.

I liked the George Formby, Hoagy Carmichael and Orbison tracks. The Show of Hands If I Needed Someone was good, too.

I looked for this over the weekend at a Borders, and still saw the August punk issue of MOJO on the shelves. When I inquired at the information desk when they expected to have the September issue in, they couldn't tell me. They simply said they get boxes of magazines in every day (not just on certain days of the week), and don't know what will be inside until they open the boxes. So, since I'm apparently suffering from living in "flyover land," I guess I'll go back to my bibles and my guns. *smirk* NP: Huey Lewis & the News, "I Want a New Drug," Time Flies: The Best Of

I had the Mojo magazine with the White Album feature, in my hot little hands the other day when i was in my local newsagency...I flicked through the mag,i stood there for 5 minutes contemplating whether to buy it and then put the mag back on the shelf.....
It's my least favourite Beatles album, which doesn't mean i don't like the album,i do,i just didn't want to buy the mag for a 10 page article, the rest of the mag is not much chop...
Did i miss anything, was my impulse wrong....
Was it worth buying just for the cd.....

It focuses on events that led to it's creation and is also taken into the context of the events in the year 1968 which helped to influence the Beatles' in writing the songs that ended up on the album. It's in two parts with the second half coming out next month, so there'll be two CD's of the music from the White Album performed by other artists. The first CD is interesting. As I mentioned in a previous post, I waiting to see who covers 'Revolution 9' on the second CD.

I got it yesterday at a newsstand in downtown San Francisco. They had several copies; if folks in the hinterlands are having problems getting it, I would be glad to send you one. PM me if you're interested.

PM me if you're interested. Thanks, Scousette... I appreciate the offer! But I figure that by the time one from you could reach me in the mail, I'll be able to find a copy in my local shops. That would be a lot less trouble. I checked three places yesterday (two Borders and a Barnes & Noble), and all three still had the August issue (with no September to be found). I will keep looking. I'm also curious about the contents of the follow-up issue, as it becomes available to you folks who already have found the first one. (I considered subscribing, but I probably buy less than half the issues of MOJO I see these days, and a subscription costs nearly as much as buying a years' worth over the counter.) I was in Indy Sunday and two bookstores I checked still had last month's MOJO. Today I found the "White Album" MOJO in Kokomo, Indiana. I haven't looked at the magazine yet but I've played the free disc. Hmm.
I am glad that the disc is free. Seriously, new interpretations of Beatles' songs are a good thing overall. There are some real duds though:
1. Back In The U.S.S.R/Liz Green: Things get off to a very rocky start with Ms. Green's slowed down, pitchy vocal on this rocker. Remember "Grandma's Theme" on John Mellencamp's Scarecrow album, the short traditional folk song between the songs "Scarecrow" and "Small Town" sung by Laura Mellencamp, John's grandmother? "On a dark stormy night, as the train rattled on..." Well that is exactly how Liz Gren sounds on "Back In The U.S.S.R." That is not a good thing. She blows!
2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps/Virgin Passages: This sucks; it is the worst Beatles' cover of all time. I listened to this in my wife's car and I could not tell this was George's classic. Everything about it is unrecognizable, the lyrcs and melody. The lyrics aren't even sung but chanted and they are unrecognizable. It is like being at a Bob Dylan concert and everyone in the adjoining seats are scratching their heads and asking each other WTF did Bob just play? If you didn't have the c.d. jacket in hand, you could not know what song this was. Virgin Passages suck big time.
3. Don't Pass Me By/Field Music: In the, "don't pass me by, don't make me cry" part the singer breaks into "Don't Let Me Down." Hey, this is Ringo's big moment, John's got plenty of his own. That is a trick Mark Hudson was good at but like with Hudson, sticking one Beatles'song into another one is so passe, it is so LOVE!
4. Blackbird/Julie Powlis: Damn, Paul writes a great lyric for a change and this one's in French!
5. I Will/Joan As Police Woman(featuring Violet): The singing is okay but the beautiful melody of the song is gone. Women singing "I Will" always works well for me but not this one.
An excellent but creepy cover is The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill/ Dawn Kinnard & Ron Sexsmith with the Suppliers. Whoa, this cover is scary. It sounds like Nine Inch Nails or Alice Cooper doing it. It could come from the soundtrack to gore-fest Hostel.
The others are okay but for the 5 I have singled out above.

I still hope i haven't missed out on something i may well have enjoyed...

It took me 3 stores (a Borders, a Barnes & Noble, and a second Borders) yesterday (Tue 9/2/8), but I *finally* was able to track down this September MOJO rather than the August "punk" issue! So I bought the magazine yesterday, read the Beatles articles last night (pretty good... one thing I didn't know before is that "donating to the National Trust" is apparently slang for taking a dump in public), and ripped the CD to my iPod. I'm listening to it now. The covers are definitely a mixed bag. I agree with JSD that the cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is HORRIBLE. Some of the others are worth checking out, though, and give the old songs a bit of new life (like "Martha My Dear"). Meanwhile, I'm betting some of you already have access to Disc 2 and MOJO's October issue; if so, central Indiana is a full month behind you! On Saturday afternoon I checked the local Borders and Barnes & Noble, neither had the September MOJO. I don't know if they had it and sold out or never got it in at all. I might check back next weekend. After reading the reviews here it doesn't look like I missed much.
However, I was surprised at the number of music publications available. And I was starting to think the print media was dying away, due to the Internet.

I found the MOJO issue Sunday in St. Louis.
John, I have to tell you I disagree with your first reactions to the disc. I actually think Back in the USSR is quite good -- I understand your reference to the Scarecrow track -- but this version has a lot more development than that. It makes me think of Stephen King's use of Hey Jude in the Gunslinger series. I think this is somewhat what Jude sounded like in that world -- pounded out by a drunk on a rinky dink piano in a violent setting. USSR here is ragtime, somewhat, very Southern.
Overall, I like the production of the songs. There are a lot of spooky organs and such that characterize the WHite Album for me. Wild Honey Pie is cool -- I like how the keyboard begins to sound like I am the Walrus with its two-chord repeat.
For Guitar, no doubt it's either love it or hate it. I'm going to give it some time. It's a deliberate avant garde take on it. Think about it, who needs another straight version of that song? I like the idea of trying something different.
Don't Pass Me By: I thought at times that this sounded like the POB midway between the first album and Imagine. Don't get me wrong, I do love Ringo's version, but this version gives real life to what I thought was a second-rate tune. It also makes you think about how much effort was given to making Ringo's songs into respectable tracks. Sure, there was always time spent, but it was more to make them novelty moments rather than GREAT tracks.
I agree about I Will. That version bugs me so far. Julia is gorgeous.
I might add more later. Those are just initial thoughts.
