Okay, everyone. Roll Call:
Sayne - San Diego Chargers. Expected to win division again (some see it as a weak division). Could get competition from Broncos. Odds are good for them to go all the way, but history, like for the Cubs, shows that they will find a way to exit early.

Colts. I'm for any team that Tony Dungy leads. He may not be the only class act in the NFL, but he heads any list that is compiled.
And I root for class.

Bears. Should have a solid defense and special teams again. But on offense, question marks at QB, RB, WR and the offensive line...outside of that, the offense should be fine. If they get any kind of production on offense they could be in the running for the NFC North and a spot in the playoffs. But I'm not holding my breath. ;D

Oh, sayne...you've opened a can of worms!! I've been trying to keep my excitement to myself since there are still a few weeks of preseason to go, but I just can't anymore -- GO STILLERS!!!!You asked for it! ;D I had to keep reminding myself last night that it's only preseason, don't worry, don't worry, watch the Pirates lose again. Sorry, Steve, I'm ready for football! I love my Pirates, but they are done for the year. We have a good base to build upon for next year and we all sure hope it's going to be better for us next year. I'm ready for some football (and hockey close behind)! ;D Here we go Stillers, here we go! Come on now, let's hear yunz n'at! JCV

You're welcome. It's the least we could do for 1984 sayne, I like a guy that goes straight for the jugular. I remember those 1984 playoffs, wasn't it Steve Garvey that hit the homer to seal the deal for the Padres? He ran around the bases, acting like he was pull starting a chain saw. And once again, the Cubs World Series hopes were dashed to bits.

JCV, I don't know why but I kind of had you picked as a Steeler fan. At least your team has a QB. BTW, how has the Steelers #1 pick, RB Rashard Mendenhall, looked so far? He's out of the University of Illinois, I wouldn't have minded seeing him in a Chicago Bear uni but they had greater needs on the offensive line.

The Garvey homerun predated the famous Kirk Gibson vs Eckersley moment. Lee Smith for the Cubs was a monster, the Padres were down, and Garvey did pump like Gibson did. It didn't win the NL championship for them, but they made it hard for the Cubs to recover from the let down. Didn't the usually reliable Ryne Sandberg let one go a la Bill Buckner? I'm pulling for ya guys!

Thanks a lot for this! It was interesting to see that the Cubs had Ron Cey and Davey Lopes and the Padres had Steve Garvey (all three former Dodger teammates), and I did not realize that Dennis Eckersley was still a starting piticher at that time.

You're welcome sayne. Hard to believe the 1984 NLCS is coming up on 24 years ago. There were a lot of great players involved in that series. Not sure but I think the player on the Cubs who let ground ball get by him was not Sandberg but Leon Durham, Cubs first baseman.

JCV, I don't know why but I kind of had you picked as a Steeler fan. ;D So far so good. He and Lawrence Timmons (our #1 draft pick from last year) are expected to bring good things to our team this year. I'm trying to get used to the idea of having Byron Leftwich as a 2nd QB. We love Charlie Batch and hope he recovers quickly. Byron's all right, it's just hard to see him as a Stiller. Our second preseason game was not so good. Even I can tell what needs to be worked on! Perhaps I should go up to camp and give them a little advice. ;D JCV

At Bears training camp, Rex Grossman, Bears starting QB the last couple of years, was getting booed by the fans attending the practices, every time he fumbled a snap or threw an interception. Can you imagine getting booed at practice? Rex should have just moved on, he just doesn't have what it takes to be an NFL QB. Seems to be a nice person but...

Very impressive.

That's why it's fun for the baseball fan to go to sites like baseball-reference.com and look back on baseball history. Do yourself a favor, go to the main page, look up Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle or any of the greats, look at their career stats. Absolutely jaw dropping.

Thanks a lot for this! It was interesting to see that the Cubs had Ron Cey and Davey Lopes and the Padres had Steve Garvey (all three former Dodger teammates), and I did not realize that Dennis Eckersley was still a starting piticher at that time. Oh that Playoff Series killed me! The Cubs win the first two with Sutcliffe and Trout. We got Eckersley starting Game 3 in San Diego so I am making World Series plans. I actually went home from college for the weekend wanting to be closer to Chicago for the celebration. Everytime Ron Cey came to bat the Wrigley organist played Macca/Jacko "Say Say Say" (get it, Cey Cey Cey?) and life was good. I had a beautiful coed girlfriend at I.U. and I was cruising through school. A World Series Championship would cap it all off! Hey, I realize Detroit was awesome but the Cubs had been magical since the series that year with St. Louis where Ryno was a god! Harey Carey and Steve Stone were at the top of their game in the booth, Harey in good health but always drunk by the 4th inning. Damn life was good. But then the trip to San Diego. Okay Cubs, you just have to win one of three but obviously it would be best to win Game 3 or 4 at the least. I think at that time, no team had ever come back from 0-2 in a 5 game series. Going to Game 5 would be scary as the tide would have changed. Hmmm. Typical Cubs! My infamous temper tantrum after the Game 4 loss is still talked about in my hometown with my buddies laughing out loud but my parents highly disturbed at the time thinking that they would have to get a 72 hour emergency detention order for me in a pysch ward. I haven't been as much of a Cubs' fan since although they are still my team but I am hardly rabid like I was. Go Colts!I was a lifelong Bears' fan from living in NW Indiana and still am proud to see them win(except against the Colts) but once my beloved State of Indiana got a football team, I had to go for my Indianapolis Colts just as Robert E. Lee left his cherished United States for his more beloved Virginia. I am fully aware that JMG and other Bears fans would prefer to use the Benedict Arnold history analogy as to Colts' fans like me. That pairing at the Super Bowl two years ago was bittersweet for me. Our new Lucas Oil Stadium is amazing but I will always miss the Hoosier Dome/RCA Dome. And JMG, I froze my ass off at old Soldier Field many a Sunday even in the pre-Ditka days when Walter's amazing rushing yardage with no O-line was about the only thing going.

I understand your situation, JSD. Living in Indiana I'm sure most of the people you deal with on a day to day basis are Colt fans. And rightfully so. The Colts today are one of the very best teams in the NFL. Speaking of the great Walter Payton, I've had the pleasure of meeting Walter several times over the years. One of my most prized possessions is a Wilson Super Bowl XX football autographed by... Walter Payton Matt Suhey Mike Ditka Dan Hampton Mike Singletary Otis Wilson Gary Fencik Jay Hilgenberg And many more players and coaches of that great 1985 Chicago Bear Super Bowl XX Championship team. Platteville Wisconsin was a great place to be back in the days when the Bears held summer training camp there (1984-2000). And yes, I froze my ass at the old Soldier Field many times. These days I prefer to watch the Bears in the comfort of my home, on the big screen TV, sitting next to the fireplace. The beer and food is not only better but less expensive and there's no line to the john. ;D
