Well, it was the final night of the tour. No surprises. You can pretty much read JohnSDamm's review of the Hammond, Indiana show to know what this concert was like.
Here are some of my notes:
1. During With a Little Help From My Friends, Joe Walsh, Ben Harper, and a guy in a beret came out to sing along. Couldn't make out who the beret wearer was. Stay tuned. I'm sure it will be reported by someone.
2. The sound was clear, but very low in volume. I love my concerts to be really physical experiences. I like to feel the drums and bass in my gut. Overall, it sounded fairly tepid. I wanted to be crushed by Rick Derringer's solos, especially his end of Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo solo, but it was way down in the mix, at least where I was sitting. He shredded, though.
3. For those of you who saw the show in other areas, I don't know if Ringo said these things:
* After Derringer's solo in Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo, he said that Rick
was putting out a learn-to-play guitar book for beginners. What we heard
just now was "Lesson One." THAT was funny! Even my wife laughed.
* Gary Wright before Dream Weaver told a very long story about a trip
he took to India with George. Later in the concert, Ringo, right before
introducing Gary again, said something like, "Here's Gary with another long
story," or "Here's Gary with another story." Very funny. (My wife laughed)
* Gary Wright mentioned books that George had given him to read. After
Dream Weaver, Ringo first said he never got any books from George.
After people laughed, he then said something like, "Actually, I did get books
up to here", then put his hand up to his forehead. Funny.
* He did ask how many people bought his new CD and was very pleased that
for the first time during the tour the number finally reached double
figures - 12. Funny
* Right before Yellow Submarine, Ringo told everyone that they should
sing along because they should know the words. If they didn't know the
words, they might be at the wrong concert. He said something like, "Cat
Stevens is next week." Even Ringo laughed at that one.
4. I was disappointed when Ringo told Gary Wright that "that was the best
you've ever sung Dream Weaver because I knew he had said it at other shows. It could have been the best, but knowing what I knew, it didn't sound real.
5. As other tours, I was disappointed when Ringo went off stage. But, this time it was particularly bad because during Edgar Winter's Frankenstein, Edgar traded drum licks with Greg Bissonette. That should have been Ringo! I don't think Ringo's drumming was as skillful as in past tours. I think he was more metronome that in other tours. I remember being really impressed with him during the Lake/SheilaE/Jones/Hunter/Hodgson All-Starr tour.
6. I give Ringo props for him doing songs off his new and most recent CD's, but he could have chosen better ones - especially since Ben Harper was there.
That's it for now. Two Beatles in 5 months - nice!
Addendum:
(I liked this one because it's actually taken about 10 rows up from me, and that's about how old I was when my mom took me to see the Beatles in San Diego back in 1965)
