The UK Rarities one is part of the trade dress of the Beatles Box exercise EMI carried out with regard to the vinyl - there was a singles box, an EP box, a mono LP box and a stereo LP box, and the Rarities album went into the LP box to complete the missing tracks (this was before Past Masters). The trade dress was the same for all the boxes and Rarities. Initially, Rarities was only available in the LP box, so people bought the box just to get the Rarities tracks not available elsewhere (the German tracks and some stereo ones). And they were disappointed and irritated in some ways because the sleeve was inaccurately labelled as to stereo/mono. And then they got more pissed off because the Rarities album was released seperately. And then they got even more pissed off still, because the seperate version - the same pressing - had a different sleeve, with the mono/stero labelling errors corrected, so completists bought it again. A typical EMI Beatles marketing cock-up.

I have to say after careful consideration that the Love Songs album is kinda bland. It tries hard to be classy, but ends up gold leaf on cardboard. It totally lacks any imagination whatsoever.

So there does seem to be some apathy or disgust involved, just dash off the first cover on this comp Christmas album. The American cover is actually cool. I take it that the title, From Then To You was original to the 1970 comp, meaning the 1963 Christmas message sleeve wouldn't have that printed on it? I presume that in the case of Beatles Christmas product, the packaging and artwork would have been extremely low budget, produced by a small back-room team of bewildered misfits. This was at the back of my mind in terms of mittigating circumstances for the visual atrocity that is the 'From then to you' cover... ...still, it's horrible, so my vote remains!

eil.com/shop/moreinfo.asp?catalogid=318460This shows the sleeves (and the sleeves at least had some artwork and text, which put them one up on the UK singles which were all in a generic Parlophone paper sleeve): the records were 7" flexidiscs, I think they may have been engieered to pay at 33rpm, I'm not sure without looking it up. So yes, they were fairly cheap. The album was vinyl, same production standard as a normal LP.

I'll vote off From Then To You (UK). Amateurigh cut and paste job. Look at the miserable faces on them, could a picture of happy Beatles not be found?

Honestly. There is still so much dross to choose from I feel like a kid in a candy store! This tourney is a great illustration of how poorly the greatest band in the world were served by the incompetents and dullards at both EMI and Capitol. Just for the moment I am going to put the mind-numbingly boring, unimaginative, cut-and-paste Capitol monstrosities to one side and focus on the simply awful 'From then to you' (UK). I mean, just look at the thing! The person in the EMI artwork department who hatched the idea of four decapitated heads set against a vomit-inducing beige background with lettering derived from a five-year-old child's stencil set wants thrashing severely with a wet plimsoll. From Then To You (UK)Vectis, Woolie took the words right out of my mouth! He was just quicker to relate his disdain for this cover than I as I was happily in my garden last week. ;D Seriously, I look at the list JSD so kindly posted for us all and was like...are you guys serious about NOT picking this cover to be voted off first? Look at their faces! They look like they've just seen a ghost, or had some very bad bangers 'n mash and are looking for a quick scotch 'n coke to wash it all down! Atrocious! JCV
