[ I thought Ringo Starr, not Gary Brooker, should have sung "Old Brown Shoe." If Ringo sang it in that same mournful voice that he sang "Matchbox" with, that would have been very, very amazing(and rocking). Ringo was a Beatle, let Ringo sing a George Beatle song. Let Brooker sing "Blood From A Clone" or some other solo song. In another thread, someone mentioned that Eric Clapton chose the songs for the performers and got a kick out of Paul having to learn ATMP from scratch. I want to check the source for this because I can't picture Paul disagreeing and then being booted from the show. Also, it seems that Paul had some input into the way "Something" was performed. Back to the point here: Clapton chose "Photograph" for Ringo? I don't buy it. I can't believe Eric Clapton even knew "Photograph."

I very rarely agree with Mr Self: his musical tastes, and general attitudes to life, religion and politics differ substantially from my own (though we both strongly admire For No One)... McCabe Oh, great. Now I gotta go back and reevaluate my love for "For No One." JcS

Ringo1- 5 really solid songs
V&M 1- One excellent song, one good, 2 ok, 2 dreck.
seriously, Magneto and Titanium Man? If anyone else wrote or performed it we'd ALL be having a laff.
Ringo 1, by a wide margin.

I always thought Ringo was singing back up on Old Brown Shoe (like Bungalow Bill and Carry That Weight), but never saw any credits to this effect. So did I! A good friend of mine from high school and college also thinks that but yeah, we can't find anything to substantiate that. Ringo could sing a great lead vocal on "Old Brown Shoe."

Oh, and for those wondering, I've not voted yet--it's still too close, as I don't want to create a tie on the board, but this match would be knotted if I did.

[I will always envision "Photograph" as a wonderfully poignant break-up song, nothing to do with a good buddy dying. "I want you here to have and hold, As the years go by and we grow old and grey." I don't want to envision Ringo and George having each other and holding each other as they grow old and grey. I don't know when you're being tongue in cheek or not sometimes, Huck. But that line need not be taken so literally in the context of George and Ringo's everlasting friendship until they're old, gray-haired buddies. But I do like your suggestion of Ringo doing OLD BROWN SHOE for the concert.

PS No need to reply. That would give the impression that you just want to have the last word - and that couldn't be true, eh Joe? No moreso than you do. When there's something to add or respond to, I shall. When there isn't, I'll walk away. The choice is mine. I don't let someone dictate when I feel I need to reply.

But I do like your suggestion of Ringo doing OLD BROWN SHOE for the concert. I can't help but take that line from "Photograph" literally in that it invokes to me two lovers growing old and grey together, not good friends doing so. Not that there would be anything wrong if George and Ringo had been lovers but I have never read that they were. Hey, you know where I stand on "Little Child." Ringo also could have sung "Cloud Nine" as George goes into a lower vocal register there. Ringo can sing what he wants to at George's tribute concert but I just found it more than a mere coincidence that he did two songs that he already does on a regular basis. Why not do a different Carl Perkins song? Why not "Everybody Wants To Be My Baby" which is Carl and which George actually sang. John Lennon was the other Beatle who sang "Honey Don't." It was a wonderful Concert and yes Paul was so heartfelt on ATMP no matter what the background of him doing that song.

I actually feel exactly the opposite. If it wasn't McCartney it would be recognized as a pretty good rocker (especially live) but because it is Paul and the lyrics are about comic book characters, it is considered a piece of fluff by the "hip" critics.

Really couldn't decide on this for a long time so had to really give it a listen. It went to Venus & Mars. Sorry Ritchie.

Since this is closing tonight, I think I can safely vote now without throwing this into a tie. I do like V&M 1, and it may get my vote in a future match, but nothing in this tournament can top RINGO 1 for me. From the tongue in cheek humor of "I'm The Greatest" to the wonderful production of "Hold On,' with the majestic "Photograph" anchoring the side before giving way to the chaotic country "Sunshine Life" and finishing up with an incredible cover of a song you'd have bet a former Beatle couldn't have done well--and lost--the whole side is nothing but a pleasure. And it's a shame (to me) that it's out this early. I shoulda stuck it against a POB side! JcS

Then it occurred to me You couldn't be bad Magneto was mad "Tit"tanium too (can you learn to pronounce this?) And the Crimsom Dynamo Just couldn't cut it no more You was the law... Now, its ok to like this but recognize that it's only because your a fan of the artist, this song is so clearly dreck, its not even a matter of opinion, it just is. Imagine some artist you don't respect doing this, you'd be all over it s an example of why that artist sucks. You're telling me that you would gain a more positive opinion of an artist you didn't like if he wrote and recorded Maneto and Titanium Man? How about the Frog Chorus?
