In case you didn't see it, I ran an item this morning that I found out about almost accidentally concerning Ringo's latest video update. The item is at abbeyrd.best.vwh.net/news/1011/noautographs.html . I won't say anymore, but take a look, look at the video, and let me know your reaction.

Wow! Ringo is really pissed off! You can hear the anger in his voice in spots.
Notice that he is not asking that fan mail stop, just any and all requests for autographs.
I am just speculating but maybe: 1. He has seen his autographs on sale at E-bay or somewhere and feels exploited; or 2. He's been sued for losing valuable items sent to him for autograph although he wouldn't be liable if such was sent to him unsolicited but he would still have defense costs and time costs of depositions, etc.; or 3. Someone who didn't get something signed is harassing him with nasty emails, letters, phone calls.
First off, I didn't know that Ringo was signing stuff from the mail. We all better get our stuff in the mail to him now! ;D
Second, is Ringo brain dead with how he works "peace and love" in to every fricking oral statement he ever makes anymore? WTF, Ringo, you sound like an idiot. Every time the guy opens his mouth that comes out. And I don't want the Ringo apologists saying the world needs more peace and love as the context here is all about Ringo saying "f_ck off" fans.
This "peace and love" is like a facial tick with Ringo. I think it is because his brain is goo from years of booze, drugs and now old age.
I really like much of Ringo's music, both Beatles and solo, and have been a fan of his since 1975 but I think that the man himself is a real asshole. Maybe I won't buy his albums anymore so there goes 5% of his total sales! ;D
I am obviously upset but I've watched this clip twice and it makes me angry. Ringo is acting like a spoiled child. Thanks though for sharing it Steve, I needed to see one of my "heroes" acting like a jerk. I hope Ringo's Rep responds.

John, I could not agree with you more on this subject.
I have always liked Ringo, but this latest stunt he is pulling really PISSES ME OFF. Who would Ringo or any of The Beatles be without their fans? I can tell you quite simply...
NOWHERE! They would all be NOWHERE MEN.
I for one am so sick of some jerks ruining it for the rest of us. If as you say, that perhaps someone is harassing him or some people are selling his autographs....then why should 1% of the population ruin it for the 99% of us who are fans and who would truly treasure such an item?
Ringo does sound pissed off and sort of looks drunk to me in that video. I think he has really hurt his image on this one. He did not have to publically come out and say this, he could have just thrown all of the fan mail away if he felt so strongly about it and not mention it to us.
I still love you Ringo, but you have hurt my perception of you.
I think the Peace and Love thing is getting a bit stupid as well. It is "old hat" and needs to be retired. He needs to head over to Iraq and start spouting that off to the Iraquis if he feels so strongly about Peace and Love.

Ringo does sound pissed off and sort of looks drunk to me in that video. I thought so too but was afraid to say it, freis. Ringo getting sober was the best thing he ever did back in the late 1980's but he looks and sounds kind of impaired in this video to my old eyes and ears.

I've heard from several people via email who have given a whole bunch of theories, but I'm not gonna make any guesses. It is pretty strange...

And the video is still up at www.ringostarr.com/home.php . Look under New Movies Posted/No more signing stuff at the top of the page. Click on "Click here to watch."

I tried to access the video but I've got a phobia against downloading stuff that pops up warnings and "agreements". Is there any other way I can see this, or can someone be specific as to what Ringo said, and his words and demeanor? Later on I tried to get brave and all I saw was a white box with the audio bar moving, but no picture and no sound. But this is something I'd love to see/hear.
Frankly, I love Ringo. But all the same, sometimes he really pisses me off with his faux "Peace and Love, Peace and Love!" baloney. I wasn't even aware that he was signing autographs by mail. If he was doing this, it was a cool thing while it lasted. But what's his excuse now?
I saw both Paul and Ringo in person acting like jerks. And recently there was that video of uber-jerk Paul calling that woman "fatso". You know, this is not exactly the way I want to think of our nice lil' lads in their old age.

Don't hold back Ringo deserves every bit of ass chewing he can get on this one. ;D Well, another thing that got my goat was Ringo saying that he was just "too busy" to mess with autograph requests coming in the mail! "Too busy!" No one leads the life of pleasure like Ringo Starr! What, Monte Carlo taxing your nerves! Are you breaking a sweat walking through your lemon and fig groves, Ritchie? JoeK, if you haven't seen it yet, Ringo said he will no longer accept autograph requests in the mail postmarked after October 20! Hell, today is only the 12th, let's all get busy and deluge him! ;D This also means that we should hound Ringo for autographs in person since he obviously doesn't like the quieter, safer method of having such requests come through the mail. At every turn, all 173 of us remaining Ringo fans should appear out of nowhere hounding him for autographs. He can't be any ruder than he always has been, as JoeK has witnessed in person. Actually, this may be Ringo's reverse psychology: maybe no one is requesting autographs anymore so he does a video acting indignant and besieged with autograph requests to appear popular. In Keith Badman's Solo Years book, he tells how Ringo stormed off the set of the "Take It Away" video in 1982 because all the extras wanted Paul and Linda's autographs but no one asked Ringo for his! In England in 1982, Ringo's career was rock-bottom Badman noted and he was almost a nobody. Maybe he is really begging us to send requests!

I'm intrigued by the notion that Ringo is actually signing things that come to him.
A few years ago, I was doing some work for Melissa Etheridge's guitar tech. Knowing next to nothing about her music, I asked him which album I should get to start. He said "don't worry about it, I'll get you some promos." Eventually, a package arrived with six of her CDs in it. That was cool enough, but when I looked at them closely, I noticed an autograph (or purported one) on each. So I asked: Did she sign them or did someone in her office do it? He wasn't there when they were mailed, but told me he told the staff to send me some from the "good stack."
He was present when the Cheap Trick photo was signed, so I know it's the real deal.
But my point is that the Beatles learned the art of having someone else sign stuff for them back in the 60's; there are those that can authenticate a Lennon signature from one that Mal did for him, for instance. I'd love to have Richie's autograph on my copy of SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY, but wouldn't mail it to an address to have God-knows-who sign it.

"Peace and Love" my ass.

There is a crappy new film which is being advertised to the hilt called "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" and all it does is just remind me of Richard Starkey Jr. I am not sure what has got into him, I just wonder if there is something else lying behind it?

Yeah, I had some information about that today. Personally, I think Ringo has the right to sign or not to sign. I think the video announcing his intentions was what was wrong here. It could have been said better.

Idiotic in the extreme. The only reasoning I can give to this strange move is that there is something else behind it (which is very worrying).

The only reasoning I can give to this strange move is that there is something else behind it (which is very worrying). Are you thinking perhaps Ringo has some serious health issue? That would take up his time, put him in a foul mood and, if it were serious enough, be reason for him to make this request. I seem to recall a story about how George was still being pestered by autograph-seekers in his final days... I hope it's not that, but otherwise I think it's pretty inexcusable.

Good Day All,
Peace and Love, Peace and Love... I've been a Ringo fan for years and have seen him 3 times. I haven't listened to the whole video because I find the way he talks with all the Peace and loves annoying, very very old and tired, and just plain stupid.
After reading some of the comments, Peace and Love, I like to believe that Ringo has a good rationale for his decision such as people getting autographs and then selling them on Ebay ect. I think it would've gone a long way for Ringo to explain his reasons. If there is no reasonable rationale then don't say anything, who needs to know and who really cares. Like others I didn't realize Ringo signed things.
So Ringo makes an ass of himself at least it ended up being good fodder for Howard Stern and Msnbc to poke fun at.
I wrote this message with Peace and Love, Peace and love everyone...
remember Peace and love.

Ringo issued a statement today (Wednesday) about this situation. For Immediate Release Ringo Starr Statement regarding recent video update on his website: Ringo Starr recently put a video update on his official website asking people not to continue to send fan mail to be signed after October 20. This was in direct response to an inordinate amount of items which have recently appeared for sale on e-bay, and to those that repeatedly send cards and items to be signed. This message was not aimed at "real fans" and after over 45 yrs of signing we know they will understand. Ringo has always signed items and is in fact the only Beatle to have been doing so. Ringo also feels strongly that it is a waste of paper and we all should be mindful of our carbon footprint. At the end of the day Ringo wanted to make a message that was clear and to the point and is confident his real fans understand that. That said, the recent response from the media has prompted him to clarify that video. "How amazed am I to the reaction to my video update. I hope this statement gets as much. Please read this in a mellow way. Peace and love, Ringo."
