I don't see a connection between WHATEVER GETS YOU THRU THE NIGHT and ROCKY YOUR BABY, personally. John said the Stones based "Miss You" on "Scared," just sped it up. I once thought I got that connection but now I don't! I've been trying to get that connection! Never did. Perhaps the chord sequence?

When Disco was new I didn't like it much. These days I like it a lot, and especially as compared to cRap "music"! I'll take the '70s Disco sound over today's junk any time!... I know what ya mean. I loved 60s pop music, went nuts for psychedelic rock, and loved glitter rock, too. But I hated disco when it came out, considered it an afront to all that was good in music. But nowadays, what can I say, some of those Bee Gees songs still sound pretty good. And lately I've been listening to the Rolling Stones song "Emotional Rescue" from 1980 that I'm sure Mick tailor-made for the dance floors of Studio 54 and it sounds pretty good with some real humor and sexiness to it. While I'm on a rant I'll add I also went nuts for New Wave and Punk. But yeah, most Rap music goes over my head. And I could live without 90% of the Heavy Metal stuff.

Emotional Rescue is among my least favorite songs of all-time. The falsetto vocals are wretched. I don't like "Miss You" very much either. "Shattered" is the high point of the late 70's/early 80's Stones. My favorite disco influenced song was "Superman" by the Kinks. Showed that lyrics of substance could accompany a rocking disco beat. (and there were no annoying vocals)

Emotional Rescue and Miss You are probably both in my top 5 all time favorite Stones songs.

Thats what I love about music. There's no right or wrong. One person might find a song sickening and consider it sh*t. Another person, who knows, maybe he had sex for the first time and lost his viriginity while that song was playing so it'll always have magical connotations to him. And both points of view are equally correct. As far as I know there's no objective standard for any of this stuff.
John Lennon on Emotional Rescue: "Take Mick for instance. Mick's put out consistently good work for 20 year and will they give him a break? Will they ever say: 'Look at him, he's number one, he's 37 and he has a beautiful song Emotional Rescue, its up there'? I enjoyed it, a lot of people enjoyed it."

Emotional Rescue and Miss You are probably both in my top 5 all time favorite Stones songs. Since JoeK isn't adding anything new, I'll dig up something old I had thought about posting way back. I mentioned this to my son and his response was exactly what I was thinking: "How can anyone who is a Beatles fan have these as two of his 5 favorite Rolling Stones songs"? My favorite Stones songs are "Paint It Black", "She's A Rainbow", "The Last Time", "Get Off Of My Cloud" and "In Another Land". Although I do like "Sympathy For The Devil " and "Shattered" a lot and they are the least bit Beatles sounding. But seriously "Emotional Rescue" is a joke at best. It made my list of "50 worst top 40 hits" that I put together in 2000. I hate that high voice of Mick's.

(And I also love The Beatles and the more "rockin' " Stones). I was 18 in 1980 and EMOTIONAL RESCUE was a huge radio hit that summer. I recall making out with my first girlfriend in the car to the radio with the windows steaming up on hot summer nights, and EMOTIONAL RESCUE was always coming on the radio ... with Mick's voice setting the romantic mood along with us! To this day each time I hear the mid-point of the song where Mick's real voice comes back and he sings "Yeaahhhh... I was drrreammin' lasst night....", I always associate this with a huge make-out kiss! I also loved MISS YOU -- and also UNDERCOVER OF THE NIGHT. I also liked all of these because the Stones finally tried to sound different.

But would those two be in your top 5 Stones songs? Hmmm. Good question. I'll have to think about it, but maybe you can start a thread on it?

Paint It Black - probably in my top 5 She's A Rainbow - not very high on my list at all The Last Time - excellent, at one time this would have been top 5 Get Off Of My Cloud - Not interested, sounds like Jack Flash, I'm not that big on it either In Another Land - Well it's no Monkey Grip, a cross between something on Piper at the Gates and what was that Monkees' song... Sympathy For The Devil - Top 5, maybe #1 Shattered -shadoobie, top 10 maybe

Riding across the desert, in my fine Arab Charger ...." It's a great song. And from Undercover, the disco'ey Too Much Blood. It was rocking too. "Caught him burying the bones..."
