I gave this a 3, for good. It's never been one of my favourite Lennon songs and I rarely play it, so a 4 was out. However, this co-wrtitten song is better than I remembered it. The lyrics are cogent and accurate regarding the argument being made. Historically, women have been oppressed and across much of the world. The accompanying music is powerful and fitting for the importance of the subject.

The Beatles didn't do it (except in Piggies, but I cut that a break because it's so bloody funny, and Revolution, which is terminally wonderful), but John, Paul and George have all tended to tell us what we're doing wrong from time to time in their solo work. Aren't they also allowed their opinions? They happen to be performers, so they air them in their music. But as usual, you give The Beatles a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card! Okay, you use the excuse that PIGGIES is tolerable because "it's so bloody funny".... but to me it seems like a double standard in your accepting REVOLUTION. Much like mistreating women is ugly.

Here are the lyrics....
Songwriters: LENNON, JOHN/ONO, YOKO
Woman is the nigger of the world Yes she is...think about it Woman is the nigger of the world Think about it...do something about it
We make her paint her face and dance If she won't be a slave, we say that she don't love us If she's real, we say she's trying to be a man While putting her down, we pretend that she's above us
Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with Woman is the slave of the slaves Ah, yeah...better scream about it
We make her bear and raise our children And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen We tell her home is the only place she should be Then we complain that she's too unworldly to be our friend
Woman is the nigger of the world...yes she is If you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with Woman is the slave to the slaves Yeah...alright...hit it!
We insult her every day on TV And wonder why she has no guts or confidence When she's young we kill her will to be free While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb
Woman is the nigger of the world Yes she is...if you don't believe me, take a look at the one you're with Woman is the slave to the slaves Yes she is...if you believe me, you better scream about it
We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance We make her paint her face and dance
The phrase was originally coined by Yoko Ono during a magazine interview in 1967. Lennon later said it took him until 1970 to "dig it."

This song makes me uncomfortable for some reason. Maybe it's all the sax. I like the guitar fills and the ending "We make her paint her face and dance!!!".
I can't give this any better than a 2.5, 2.0 for the pole.
