I'd be really scared walking round parts of America because the perception is that most of you are carrying guns. I definitely wouldn't want to offend anyone for fear of being pumped full of lead and being labelled as some kind of pinko, commie, aetheist, stalinist, leninist, maoist, leftie evolutionist, abortionist and liberal socialist causing the downfall of the western world! When all I'd said was that the British National Health Service was wonderful. You wouldn't offend me. Come out to San Francisco. We like our commie pinko atheist marxist leninist beatlemaniacs. I think I may have gone a little over the top there Scousey. I apologise. Tragedies like this are heartbreaking. People owning machine guns just doesn't make sense to us in the UK.

It troubles me too. And you should still come over here!

Lots of Muslim radicals always looking to make a statement in the UK.

Have been since a tea party in the 1770's made us decide to go it on our own!

I said "as an aside" meaning I was stepping out of the debate for a moment to express my personal terror of being stabbed to death. As opposed to those who enjoy being stabbed to death? And I replied to that in agreement, if you read it. But there's no way we're ever gonna be able to change the brains and thinking patterns of every single human on Earth. We should try to do our best of course. But it seems more constructive to realize there'll always be some bad people out there; we just gotta try to make it tougher for them to harm others.

KING: You may choose the manner in which you will die!
LARRY: Oh, that's easy -- Old Age!
(laughter)
KING: Silence!! ... You may have your heads chopped off, or you can be burned at the stake!
CURLY: We'll take burning at the stake!
KING: Fine -- we'll toast them at sundown...
(The KING exits)...
MOE (to CURLY): You idiot -- why'd ya pick burning at the stake?
CURLY: Because a hot stake is better than a cold chop ... Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk...

I have a phobia, a 24/7 fear of being stabbed to death. No one enjoys being stabbed to death but most don't fear it until it is unfortunately happening to them.

Sadly, a right to carry a Kinder egg is not guaranteed in the US constitution.

. . . at the same time, I do have a sense of the concern gun owners have about the absolute banning of ALL guns (although I wouldn't mind it). Based on what I'm hearing, I'm concerned that PMRC-type censors will be on every television or movie set or theater stage or radio station or whatever with their violence meter scorecard and checklist.
Director: Okay, when we shoot this scene, remember, we can show someone get shot, but we can't show the gun, we can't have more than one shot, and it has to be in the leg. No more than 2 people can be shot, so everyone will be running away when they hear the first bullet. I'm also going to change the script a bit. When Bruce Willis storms in, he's going to say "Hold it right there, I've got two bullets with no one's name on them, yet, suckers. If you want to be able to run after I leave, you better do it now!"
The palaver has given me a vision of no song or movie or book will have "gun" or "death" or "murder" or "blood" in it's title. Movies like Good Fellas or The Godfather or Pulp Fiction will never be made again.
Yes, we need to address the gun issue, but it's a bigger issue than that. There IS a measured and rational approach. Although I'd like ALL guns gone, as a pragmatist, I'm okay with the concept of possession for hunting (yes, a vegetarian said that), collecting, or a single gun for home protection (although you're more likely to kill yourself or a loved one). I'm concerned politicians will go to the extreme in order to garner campaign points.

Sayne, I agree with what you say above. My original point was gun control alone will not stop mass killings although I concede it makes them much harder to pull off but I think of Oklahoma where no firearm killed anyone. Certain guns should not be available to just anyone(and in a perfect world we wouldn't need them at all).
Going back to the victims, survivors and persons who were involved, I have read about or seen on film these past four days some of the most amazing and inspiring people ever. These people help restore what little faith I have in humanity:
Robbie Parker who came forward having lost his beautiful daughter, Emilie, and speaking words that would make Jesus Christ weep, extending condolences to the killer's family and talking about a renewed faith in raising his surviving children with his wife;
Principal Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung and Mary Sherlach, School Psychologist, who died literally trying to save their students by running out of a meeting and confronting and actually trying to subdue the killer as only "mama bears" would;
Those little children, six years old, who escaped right past the killer and helped each other out of that Hell when the adults around them were dead;
Anne Marie Murphy, a special education aide who died holding little, vulnerable Dylan Hockley in her arms as he too was killed causing his distraught parents, Nicole and Ian Hockley formerly of the U.K. and also saint-like, to say:
“We take great comfort in knowing that Dylan was not alone when he died, but was wrapped in the arms of his amazing aide, Anne Marie Murphy.
“Dylan loved Mrs Murphy so much and pointed at her picture on our refrigerator every day.”
The retired psychologist Gene Rosen, more importantly a grandfather himself, who found six of those escaping children in his front yard, out of breath, crying and distraught because they could never go back to school, having seen their beloved teacher, Victoria Soto, gunned down as she was literally shielding her children in the corner of a room, and he brought those children into warmth and safety until their grateful parents could retrieve them.
There are many others I have seen who make me proud, that remind me for every evil person many more of good and decency exist and step-up when needed.
Every one of those fallen children is an angel. I hope the surviving children can somehow regain their childhoods and innocence to the extent possible. There is resilience in youth and maybe this can be a turning point if we address all elements that go into these horrible crimes.

I'm concerned politicians will go to the extreme in order to garner campaign points. The NRA will prevent the extreme (right wingers know if they go too far they will have primary opponents magically appear), but I hope we can at least wipe out assault weapons, and have more scrutiny on purchases, coupled with better mental health programs (which will unfortunately bring on the insurance company lobbies).

Just saw the attempts to legislate tougher gun reforms in America get voted down by the US senate.
Shame on you America ,shame! The whole world is watching your pathetic antics in relation to gun control, why don't you lead by example and get some credibility back?
The message you are sending is that the US is cool with killing school kids, what a bunch of idiots.

I will be extremely surprised if any of the legislators who voted against it DON'T get reeelected. There's always hope.

I just hope that culture never comes to Australia. Sorry to say, but it probably will. American culture is so ubiquitous. I've been to Italy a couple of times in the last 3 years and I've seen typical American tagging and backward caps and sagging pants all over the place. (Yes, I know that graffiti has been around since ancient Roman times)
