Last week I just happened to buy the DVD of GOOD OL' FREDA (which I thought was very good) , but my girlfriend missed parts of it and said she wouldn't mind seeing it again at the Fest... so we might be there for the showing, especially if Freda herself makes an appearance. On Saturday I will be wearing my black tee-shirt with the US "Hey Jude" LP cover on it. Look for me with my dark hair and goatee -- I will be all over the place, especially perusing the dealer's room quite a lot! Ok, I'll look out for you, and Fred. I'll be the one in the purple beret and glasses with the multicolored beard and mustache. Catch me singing way out of tune. Hang on a minute, I got confused, that's not me, that's the other Ringo fan. Not sure what I'm wearing yet. so you're not Mark Hudson??

Here are photos I took of the late Mal Evans when he visited Beatlefest in 1975, the second photo he's on stage with the band Liverpool. See everyone at the Fest! Are you sure that was Liverpool. I think the band in those days was Abbey Road.

It was great seeing Mal Evans at the convention, everybody loved him, and what happened to him later was so tragic.

I know the band in Philadelphia in February 1976 was Abbey Rosd. Those were the days the conventions were so new and exciting I'd travel to therm. Now my friends can't be bothered to go, I'm going this year only because it's a special year and it's beck at the Commodore site.

Hey Folks! It's Sunday morning, February 9th -- and I'm typing this from my Grand Hyatt hotel room in NYC. So far it's been two great and fun-filled days at THE FEST FOR BEATLES FANS! I have said hello to Denny Laine and gotten him to sign a WILD LIFE album (I didn't know he was going to be here, so I bought a cheap Columbia re-issue LP so Denny could sign the cover). He was very cordial to me. I met Freda Kelly, who is every bit as wonderful as she comes off in the GOOD OL' FREDA documentary! My God, she is so sweet and accommodating and respectful to her many fans -- she seemed to be up for signing free autographs endlessly.. I don't know how she did it! I participated in a "Name That Tune" contest where I was the Grand Prize Winner on Friday (out of 16 contestants)! On Saturday I played "Beatles Trivia" and came in #2 out of 16! I met Mark Rivera -- really cool guy, and a real talented musician. I missed Neil Innes, who was there signing and singing Rutles tunes on the stage. Hopefully I may be able to get his autograph today - I love The Rutles' songs. (As I type this the TV is on and there was a poll asking if you liked The Beatles or Rolling Stones... Beatles had 50%, Stones had 33% ). Right now they're showing their Klaus Voorman interview on the TV... There are many, many, many events going on at the Fest this year... too many, actually, because they often conflict with each other in different hotel floors and rooms. I spent a lot of dough on Beatles Vinyl, but I also got a beautiful copy of John's IN HIS OWN WRITE (uk printing). I saw OldFred a few times -- the first time I was going down one escalator while he was riding up the other next to me -- he was nice enough to go back down and meet me. I got to meet anyoneanyhow for my first time -- really great! Nice meeting you! I missed lowbasso yesterday, but I hope to hook up and place a face with his name today.

Met Joe! We hooked up outside the ballroom! We sat at an unused autograph table talking and Mark Lapidos came over and looked at us quizzically like "Do I know these guys? Are they famous?" We both had a good laugh over that one! Joe is a great guy! Had a nice chat!

With the Lovely Linda and my original Beatles button. Got back hours ago from the Fest. It was absolutely marvelous, probably the best one I've been to since the first ones at the same location in the 1970's. I attended the first Beatlefest when the Grand Hyatt was still the Commodore Hotel. Walking through the hallways outside the main ballroom brought back great memories. One of those memories was seeing the late Mal Evans at the 1975 Beatlefest. Mal was greatly loved and he's among the Beatles family that is deeply missed. Mal Evans at the 1975 Beatlefest. I went with my Lovely Linda on Saturday February 8th,and no sooner do we get off the escalator, but who do we find at the top talking to fans but none other than Good Ol' Freda Kelly herself! Freda was nice enough to sign my BluRay copy of her movie and posed for picture with me later. Good Ol' Freda and Moi Linda and I enjoyed the performances of Peter Asher with Denny Laine, Chad & Jeremy, a viewing of 'Good Ol' Freda' in the ballroom and Freda came out to say hello to the fans and brought out her young grandson who inspired her to do the movie. Later Linda and I attended the discussions about Liverpool Humor with Freda Kelly and John Lennon's half-sister Julia Baird, and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool was part of the panel. Freda Kelly and Julia Baird The next panel was a Salute to Brian Epstein with host Martin Lewis and on the panel Billy J. Kramer and Patti Boyd. Patti Boyd, Mark Lewis and Billy J. Kramer Following that was a discussion about the Ed Sullivan show with Larry Kane, Sullivan assistant Vince Calandra and fan Irene Katz who was in the audience for that first show. The last panel we stayed for was on the Animated Beatles hosted by the Fab4Free4All and animator Ron Campbell who worked on the original Beatles cartoons and Yellow Submarine. Due to commitments at home Linda was unable to go on Sunday February 9th so I went on my own with her blessings, with the provision I post a lot of pictures on my Facebook page and bring her a souvenir. I went to the main ballroom for a discussion by author David Bedford on the year that made the Beatles, 1960. This was followed by a mini-concert by Birds of Paradox which featured Wings drummer Steve Holly with a surprise appearance by Gene Cornish of the Rascals. Steve Holly Gene Cornish The Smithereens were next recreating the entire set of the Beatles first US concert at the Washington Coliseum. The Smithereens Mark Lewisohn followed with a talk about his new Beatles book. Mark Lewisohn and Martin Lewis Then Peter Asher returned to perform the second half of his career spanning show which included great stories about Badfinger, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and featured another virtual reunion with his partner the late Gordon Waller. Peter & Gordon together again. The Nutopians were next with a John Lennon set. At that point I went back to the discussion room for another, very spirited and funny panel on the Ed Sullivan Show with the Fab4Free4All, authors Mark Lewisohn, Richard Buskin and NY Times writer Allan Kozin. Ed Sullivan Panel. Then it was back up to the ballroom to catch Chad & Jeremy, a musicians forum with Mark Hudson, Billy J. Kramer, Donovan and Glen Burtnik. Chad & Jeremy Musicians Forum There was a brief remembrance on the Ed Sullivan show and then precisely at 8pm the Fest showed the begining of the original Ed Sullivan Show complete with vintage commercials, then when Ed introduced the Beatles and they came on the screen Liverpool seamlessly segued into a fantastic live performance of the Beatles Sullivan set. I stayed till the end of their performance before heading home. Liverpool It was an incredible two days that brought back great memories. And the celebrations began with CBS commemorating the anniversary with their retro reproduction of the original Ed Sullivan marquee. To Beatles' Peoples everywhere, Happy Anniversary!

We both had a good laugh over that one! Joe is a great guy! Had a nice chat! It was so terrific to meet you! We had a great talk, and I'm sure we could have gone on forever, had there not been so much else to see and do, and people to meet! I had a GREAT time this year, it was my favorite Beatlefest of all.

Maybe we should all start planning for the Chicago Fest in August! Chicago is in the middle of the country and has a vibrant Fest each year. I haven't been to one since my run in the late 1990's! My best memory was taking my young stepsons into the bootleg hotel rooms way up on the upper floors. Boy did those kids think that was the coolest thing they ever did, all cloak and dagger, knocks on the door with passwords. The scary German dude who in his thick accent kept requesting "Old Brown Shoe" as he apparently was collecting as many alternative versions as possible, but those were the only three English words he kept repeating! The boys still imitate that German guy. I was wondering what I would do if the Feds raided the room while I was in there with kids! We need the NYC guys to show us how the Fest is done!

Here's the rest of the Fest update:
yep, I met lowbasso on Sunday, as he already described -- it was great!
Steve Holly -- my God, what a sweet guy! He signed my "Goodnight Tonight" LP-sized picture sleeved maxi single, and then I met Denny Laine a second day and had him add his name to the cover as well (the photo is all of them dolled up for the GT video promo shoot).
I was really impressed with watching two members of the Elephant's Memory Band playing onstage -- bassist Gary Van Scyoc, and keyboardist Adam Ippolito.(One of the songs they played was "It's So Hard" -- with Steve Holly on drums!). Bassist Gary held a fascinating panel talk about working with John Lennon -- and he told a great story where they were about to do The Mike Douglas Show in 1972, and before John and the band were introduced, Mike sang "Michelle".... Gary said Lennon turned to Gary backstage and said "Fuckin' HELL!"... he said John did not like it, and said that he'd never seen Lennon so angry in all the time he knew him! (On the actual show, John handled it well with Mike, saying: "They usually play YESTERDAY, but I wrote the middle eight to MICHELLE so it's okay!" ) .
I loved watching the end concert with Liverpool, Billy J Kramer, Mark Hudson and -- Donovan!
I had the most EXCELLENT time at the Fest! Maybe because it was due to the "50th Anniversary" that was in the air! I had trepidations about the whole thing -- as well as the high cost -- but in the end, it felt worth it.

I haven't had time to post my review but it was great meeting JoeK, good talking with you and your lovely friend!
Highlights- Peter Asher's show including Paul's demo of World Without Love, Neil Innes- fantastic!, Chad & Jeremy, Denny Laine's "Go Now",. But I miss patti Boyd! Grrrre...autograph line wayyyyy too long. Got to talk to Peter, Neil, chad and Jeremy, Mark Rivera, and got a pic with Denny, cool. Chatted with the fab 4 Free for All guys, Mitch especially a great guy. For the first fest in decades there was more to do than time allowed, at least in the one day I attended.
Not enough seats in the main ballroom, there was nowhere to be in the Liverpool evening concert.
All in all, a great show.
Oh, lots of video of the fest on YouTube, interesting what you can find.
