I've got the I Feel Possessed single with Crowded House playing with Roger McGuinn on three Byrds songs. I'm not sure how widely available it was. A friend got it for me. He knew I liked the band.
On close examination, it's domestic. Still a great disc, though!
Me, I wasn't going to bother with these at least for awhile, but I broke down and went to Best Buy -- in the midst of a blizzard, no less (!) -- and pulled out my credit card(s) to split the cost, half on each. That's always just been how I do things (though I usually pay cash) ... I figure you only go around once, and it could all end tomorrow or even skidding off in the snow whilst on the ride home .. so I buy what I want. Believe me, I do not make a great salary, and the Missus and I are getting by (we still have enough food, electric, warmth, shelter, etc, and nothing's ever been turned off!).
So anyway -- I've sampled these discs and I can answer a few questions fans may have had. Like: they do use the reverb versions of "I Feel Fine" and "She's A Woman" (on BEATLES '65) .... yes, they do have the 'false start' to "I'm Looking Through You" off RUBBER SOUL ... they do have the "added harmonica bits" on "Thank You Girl" (stereo version)... there is the 'extra verse' on "I'll Cry Instead" off of AHDN... and the HELP! album retains the James Bond Theme. SO the good news is that, while these are not the old '60s Masters, at least they still managed to leave crucial unique details intact which fans might be wanting.
I agree that THE BEATLES STORY is useless -- never need to hear that again.
The YESTERDAY AND TODAY sleeve is really cool the way it uses The Butcher Cover on it as its default 'normal' cover, but comes also with the white trunk cover, and a peel-off back, if you decide to stick it over the Butcher (I don't know if it's removable or not; I do not intend to stick it on).
The booklet is nice...
I like the box art with the U.S. Flag. I had really been prepared to not have much use for this whatsoever, except for collectible completeness ... I initially figured I'd take the older Capitol CDs and stick them into the new box... however, these new sleeves are bigger, clearer, nicer. My ultimate opinion is that it's not as useless as I initially figured -- though I can easily see why some fans would pass and not require it.
I ordered it from Amazon. This late in the day and it hasn't shipped yet. I may have to wait until Friday or Saturday. This is too big a ticket to get two copies because I can't wait. Good news about the sound.
I think they called that "ByrdHouse," and I know I've got it, either on that CD or on a bootleg. I have several live boots of CH; my favorite was the LIVE AT THE TOWN AND COUNTRY that was actually officially released as a promo, but not in the stores. Great stuff, Tim Finn was with them on it, I think, and it deserved a wider release.

No sign of any of this in the shops here yet. I will probably weaken and buy the box eventually though. It looks like a beautiful package. I want The Beatles Story, even if it is rubbish, for sentimental and collecting reasons. I used to have it on vinyl, but sold it along with the reset of my LPs over twenty years ago. It is one of the few albums I never have been able to replace with a CD version.

It isn't the same as having it on CD, but here it is on YouTube, at least for now:

My sister got the Beatles Story in a marriage. I guess I heard it once in about '72 - '73. The only thing I really remember was Paul saying the Beatles were so good because they got along with each other so well. In the background you hear John say "What, I don't even know the girl!". I'm not sure John was picking on Paul and his comment or not but I thought he was. It sounds like John's humour.
You mention it not being in your shops yet, there was a small ad for it in the Best Buy sales section for the store in the Sunday paper. A few years back, it would had made the cover and be splayed on the first few pages.
I'm not sure if this reflects on the Beatles or Best Buy's CD market these days.

I'm betting there is no real audience for this set. The older two volumes didn't exactly wow the world, or even most Beatles Fans. Perhaps this new set has more legs because it's "Capitol-izing" off the 50th Anniversary, but most people will not need this collection at all. Strictly for diehards or completists.
Release dates given on the web - even from Australian sites - and product actually being in-store are two different things down here. The US albums will certainly arrive at the local shops, it's just a matter of waiting a few days, sometimes more. The fact that I want the box might delay things, as it is probably manufactured in the European Union, or US. Stand alone CDs are often made here in Australia, so they usually appear sooner.
I went through the same process when the recent BBC issues came out. The individual sets appeared fairly promptly, but I had to wait for weeks to get the imported combined Volume One and Two pack.
I originally bought The Beatles Story LP in the late-1970s. Back then there was a phenomenon here of "the import record store." They offered US, Japanese, etc. versions of locally issued releases and more exotic items not released here. You invariably paid a premium price for whatever you purchased. I first became aware of the US editions of Beatles' albums at one of these stores and bought most, probably over a period of months.

I'll also pass n this box except for the albums that were not in the capitol sets 1 & 2, which I love! So I think that is Yesterday & Today, AHDN, & Hey Jude...I'll pass on Revolver...never liked the US version. But may get Help! for the gatefold.
Great to see Crowded House fans here too! Love that band!

I still may have to go back and get some of those old Split Enz imports I used to see but never bought. They looked like some crazy albums. I got Waiata (Corroboree) when it came out. I REALLY liked it.
$100.00 would be an incredible price, about $8.00 per disc.
I must admit that I bought it this afternoon from Pop Market. I was not going to buy this but I liked the price; I would have liked $100.00 better!
Hasn't Pop Market had some great deals on the LENNON ANTHOLOGY box over the years? And didn't it also sell that box set of all the remastered Lennon albums for a lot less than it was originally priced? I am not sure, because I didn't buy either, but that sounds right. (I also seem to recall some of McCartney's Archive releases on there at a reduced price, but again, I didn't buy, so I could be wrong.)
$100 is an arbitrary number, of course. For me, there are five of them I don't want to pay anything for: REVOLVER and THE EARLY BEATLES are just lesser versions of the UK issues of REVOLVER and PLEASE PLEASE ME, THE BEATLES STORY-heard it once, don't need to hear it again- and the two soundtracks with the non-Beatles instrumentals. So, of the 8 in the box that I wouldn't mind having, I was thinking if I got the set for $100, then those eight would run me about 12 bucks each. I would also get the booklet and the box, which certainly looks like nice packaging. But if I bought it at the $150 mark, then I'm paying over $18 for each of the discs I might actually play sometime, and I'm just not doing that. I didn't buy the two Capitol Boxes until I got them for about $30 each (one at Sam Goody's GOOB sale and one on EBay). The second box wasn't even worth that, since EARLY and HELP! were half that box, but it's in the collection now.
I'm probably going to stick to the original plan and either buy only Y&T and HEY JUDE, or just pass completely.
JcS
I forgot to mention that if I do find this for a great price, I will offset that by selling my Capitol Boxes I already have. Yeah, I know, the sound on the new release doesn't match those two, but I don't like all the Dexter stuff, and don't turn to those to listen to for pleasure. Plus, I HATE the packaging on the first box. I opened it this week and some of the discs fell out onto the floor like they always seem to do. The second box was better designed, and the new one looks to be gorgeous and practical like the Mono Box. If I can get $50 for those two, then if I can get the new box for $100, I'll only be out $50.
And I could even go a bit higher than $100 if I'm convinced I could get $50 for my box sets. I'll be watching EBay to see how the old ones are faring in the secondary market.
I'm probably the only one on this board who would like to buy The Beatles Story (Capitol) in a CD format. It seems it is only available in vinyl or with the entire Capitol collection, but not on it's own. I have my old vinyl version, but wish it were available on CD by itself. But then again, I am a juvenile Beatle nerd.

My Box hasn't arrived yet. Well there is Friday! LOL, yeah Volume 1 was designed by a person who flunked out of CD Box design school. My discs started to fall but I caught them.

Wow, we have something in common--I haven't received a box yet either. But I suspect you'll get yours LONG before I get mine!
I opened Vol. 1 last night, and remembered to stand over a bed when I did so. Of course, having taken precautions, I didn't have anything fall out, but who wants to have to think about such when opening the package? Perhaps they thought fans would put them in the shelf, but there aren't titles on the spines.

Anybody out there who buys the set and wants to dump The Beatles Story, let me know. I'll send you my address and we can agree on a price.

My old Capitol CDs never fell out. I do have them on the shelves, but I also keep them spines-out and sitting inside the two little individual boxes they came in. One of the sets did have titles on the spines, one did not. All moot to me now, as I am going to be utilizing the NEW 2014 box and the superior sleeves (the new sleeves are bigger and their coloring on the covers is better and sharper). Only thing I may do is substitute the old Capitol Collection discs inside these brand new sleeves.
Now, I gotta say, a lot of these things are minute, and few of them would I ever notice. I appreciate the work done by whoever compiled this for the benefit of those that care about such.
I received my select reissued U.S. CDs on Friday. I did not buy the box set, as I purchased the Capitol albums Vol. 1 & 2 years ago. But, I thought it'd be cool to have "A Hard Day's, "Yesterday & Today" and "Hey Jude"! Well, from just a nostalgic standpoint, it's nice to have those three albums again. I always liked the orchestral arrangement of "This Boy" (Ringo's Theme), so that was a nice blast from the past. The larger cardboard sleeves are nice too and they include replicas of the original inner sleeves (even a plain white one for "Hey Jude "). As far as the sonics go, they all sounded good, (as expected). Since I'm not that concerned with any Dave Dexter effects, I'm not going to harp on the mixes here (and since I used Christmas gift cards to purchase them, I think I've received reasonable "value for money").
I'm interested in buying this but I noticed a lot of discussion surrounding the mixes on Facebook. In particular they are saying that the stereo versions are the same ones used on the 2009 UK remasters so I wouldn't want to buy the same mixes. Is it better to get the Capitol Box Sets Vol.1 and Vol.2 and then supplement that with the missing albums from the new box set ?
This gets confusing.
You want to save humanity but it's people that you just can't stand.

I haven't opened my American Box yet to play the discs but I would say your idea is a good one Ursa if you want something different from the 2009 remasters. Volumes 1 & 2 sound like what we Americans got on vinyl record for all of those years until the catalog went to the U.K. format in 1987 with the release of The Beatles on CD.
The article JoeySelf linked us to gives a pretty thorough summary of how these compare to the original American vinyl albums, where they "Pass" or "Fail." I find all the competing voices on this confusing too.

And other than a nostalgia for the covers and track running order, the reason for the American albums to be on CD is to preserve those mixes made (or masters doctored) for the USA market. Me, I don't care for the cavernous echo and plastered reverb, but I know some do like it, and are complaining that these aren't truly the US albums without all the extra doctoring to some of the tracks.
But the key is that you're satisfied with the purchase, and enjoying what you gave your money for (or gift cards, as it were). The reluctance to feel ripped off is what is keeping me from buying any of them; I can afford to buy the box and would never miss the money--I just don't WANT to.

I just read that article, what a tough choice, there aren't that many differences so now it becomes a decision of either buying the Capitol Boxes as they stayed true to the way Americans heard the Beatles or get the Box which has great packaging of all the albums. It looks like the Capitol boxes will go out of print and the US Box set will eventually become the US standard. Originally I just wanted Meet the Beatles as that seems to be the most famous US release and what broke them but then I became interested in the other track lists of the albums Beatles '65, Beatles VI, Yesterday and Today.
BTW, the Box Set is on sale down under at $279.99, so we are getting screwed on price compared to you guys. Our dollar is 0.87 USD so it should be about $165-$170.

I saw that $280 figure on the JB site. I take it with a grain of salt, as I have noticed in the past that they have later reduced their prices for this type of release when they get around to putting stock on their actual in-store shelves. Other Australian retailers are listing about $250 (Sanity and CDWow). This is still too much to my mind. In Adelaide there is a small shop I often frequent that routinely offers a better price than the major outlets. I will probably end up buying there and I am guessing for around $220-230.

Hey kc, that is where I saw it at the JB site. I went into the main JB at Pitt St in the city but nothing on the shelves and they did not know about it.
In Sydney in the city behind QVB there is another shop called Red Eye Records and they have everything, they have all the Paul solo releases in all the different deluxe editions, WOA on vinyl package etc.. so I will go there on Thursday and see if they have anything, they are normally expensive though. Sanity is finished in Sydney no more stores, maybe one at the domestic airport last time I flew out and that's basically it.

I saw this posted by Steve Shorten on the Facebook page called "Apple Records"--which I recommend to those here that are on Facebook--and thought it might be of some interest to those here that have either bought the box set or are thinking about it:
I think the group will appreciate this information on the new "US Albums" boxed set.
An analysis of the iTunes LP manifest included with the new "US Albums" boxed set shows exactly which recordings on the set have been completely remastered and which were sourced (from which sources) from the 2009 mono and stereo sets. Rather than needing to rely on auditory judgments, this method relies on unique identifiers (XID codes) used by Apple (the computer company) for each master they sell.
Intriguingly, an examination of the XID codes also shows that Apple has assigned XID codes to the tracks from the 2009 boxed set "The Beatles in Mono" which has yet to be released via iTunes.
Mono masters unique to the new set include Long Tall Sally, I Call Your Name, I'll Cry Instead, And I Love Her, Any Time at All, When I Get Home, a SECOND mono version of And I Love Her, I'll Be Back, She's A Woman, I Feel Fine, Help!, Michelle, I'm Only Sleeping, Dr. Robert and And Your Bird Can Sing.
Stereo masters unique to the new set: If I Fell, Help!, The Word, I'm Looking Through You, We Can Work it Out and Day Tripper.
All stereo tracks originally appearing on the UK Help! and Rubber Soul albums use the 2009 remasters of George Martin's 1987 remixes EXCEPT for I've Just Seen a Face and It's Only Love which utilize the 2009 remasters of the original 1965 mixes which appeared as bonus material on the mono Help! CD.
All alternate mono mixes that originally appeared on the US LPs ARE included in the new set.
Alternate stereo mixes that originally appeared on the US LPs but are NOT included in the new set include: Komm Gib Mir Deine Hand and I Call Your Name. In addition, stereo mixes that appeared on the 1969 Longines (Capitol Record Club) pressing and all tape issues of "Yesterday and Today" (and later Capitol pressings of the LP starting around 1978) which are NOT included in the new set: I'm Only Sleeping, Dr. Robert, And Your Bird Can Sing.
The two mixes of And I Love Her (mono) found on the new set seem to be identical, but the version contained on the soundtrack LP runs at a slower speed. The new masters in mono and stereo of Help! include the James Bond Theme intro but do not represent alternate mixes of the song (the stereo version seems to utilize the 1987 remix; this needs to be confirmed).
Steve didn't say where he got the information--I don't know if this is his research or if he is passing it on without attribution--but I know he is a knowledgeable fan and writer on things regarding the Beatles. When I wrote a few articles for The 910 back in the '90's, he was associated with that magazine; I don't know if he still is today.
