Hey, don't forget that all this week Letterman is devoting his show to the Beatles - leading up to the 50th anniversary. If you haven't seen Monday's show, here's a clip of Broken Bells doing And I Love Her. I dig how they got Ringo "involved" and how they inserted I Am the Walrus into it.

So far I think this "Letterman Beatles devotion" is extremely weak tea. I didn't care for Broken Bells' sluggish one-beat dirge of "And I Love Her" , and I think it made Ringo appear as a very limited one-note drummer in the clips. They also used that horrible image of Ringo from Tokyo 66 where he looks like he's ready to puke. Last night they had Sting -- which was a little better -- but I just don't care for "Drive My Car". Paul Schaeffer and the band are playing Beatles songs during commercials and breaks; the problem is, we the TV audience get to hear the opening notes and a word or two only, before cutting to a commercial. The show is an hour long, and they try to cram in their Beatles tune in the last 3 minutes like an afterthought. I really hope Dave steps things up as we get to the important weekend, because so far this is almost an insult. Is there really a 50th Anniversary going on? I wouldn't even know it.

I didn't realize that the one guy was Brian Burton (Danger Mouse). He did the notorious Grey Album, the disc that mashed the White Album with Jay-z's Black Album.
In this, they use an actual samples of Beatles' music. I wonder if this is legal.

I bet you can't wait until spring so you can go back to saying "Hey, you kids, get off my lawn!" It's fine that you like Sting's take, rather than Broken Bells. That's fair. I'm at the point, though, that I prefer non-traditional interpretations of Beatles' songs. Also, I like any attention the lads get.

Also, I like any attention the lads get. Me too! I was in seven heaven during the Paul/Heather public divorce. Any publicity is good publicity! Case in point, Justin Bieber. His recent arrests are brilliant PR. He goes from teeny bopper to bad ass hip hop/dance pop artist.

I bet you can't wait until spring so you can go back to saying "Hey, you kids, get off my lawn!" I don't own a lawn, yet this remark is totally uncalled for. So I am required to unconditionally like or accept anything and everything? (And it's a shame that I actually DID have to feel a sort of trepidation before "daring" to voice a dissenting - though honest - opinion here). What, do I have to like all of these half-hearted Letterman offerings in order to not get hammered? I think these are half-baked ways to "celebrate the Big 50th". I didn't even much care for Sting's stint, either. I thought both of these were lacking. The truth is, as soon as I heard the opening sounds of DRIVE MY CAR, I kissed Lisa and said "That does it -- Goodnight!", and went into the bathroom to brush my teeth, while listening to it through the closed door. I've heard DRIVE MY CAR enough and it's not one of my favorite Beatles songs. That's just my opinion and my feeling. Also -- my not caring for Broken Bells' rendition does not automatically translate into: "sayne prefers non-traditional interpretations, but JoeK does not"; no -- it means that I was not blown away by THIS one; I own various different renditions of Beatles material -- some I like, some I don't. You see, that's how it works. It's better than nothing I guess, but I think this very special 50th Anniversary calls for a lot more than what we've been given so far... the last three minutes of a 60 minute show. And having Letterman's band playing the opening notes of Beatles songs with two or three sung words before going to each commercial is hardly something I can excited about. Is it okay with you that I said I enjoyed the recent hour-long CNN "British Invasion" special that just aired? Did my approval their meet your approval? (I did say that I felt the new special was a little short at one hour so I hope that was okay)...

At least own up to what you implied about me, and for being wrong about it, as well. An apology would be respectable, though I don't 'need' it to feel good about myself. You didn't like that I did not appreciate these current weak tea Letterman tributes, so you insulted me.

You chose to take it that way. I also corrected a lot more in my response to you. And you know it. You just won't admit that you were mistaken about me. You implied that I was an intolerant old curmudgeon because I did not care for the Broken Bells tribute of "And I Love Her" and because I felt that this whole Letterman affair so far is a tepid and unworthy excuse for a celebration of The Big Beatles 50th Anniversary. That is exactly what your "I bet you can't wait until spring so you can go back to saying 'Hey, you kids, get off my lawn!' " snarky remark was indicating. Your remark is what causes threads to become "train wrecks" or fights. Not because I had a negative opinion of this weak tea Letterman tribute. The last thing we need at this time of the special Beatles' 50th is a quarrel. But you started it, I didn't. (One note about the intolerant old curmudgeon: I can be proud to be called one under the correct and applicable circumstances -- but this one was not such an example).

I wonder what Sean will pay tonight on Letterman? This will be huge!
What if Sean surprises us and calls out Zak, Dhani and James?! Beatles Boys to the rescue as to what has been a lame week remembering the most important cultural event in the last 100 years!

Back to the Letterman show, I thought the performance by Broken Bells on Monday was excellent (must admit I had not heard of them until now). I like the fact that they took a song like "And I Love Her' and performed it in a slightly unique way, but not making it unrecognizable (as some of those Beatles tribute covers included with Mojo magazine have done over the years:( Especially like the sampling of "I Am the Walrus" and getting to see Ringo incorporated into the performance. Very nice.
Did not care for Sting on Tuesday. His vocal performance on "Drive My Car" was rather week. It may have been that his voice was being buried too low in the mix. Had never heard of the woman who he co-sang lead with (Ivy something), but she was more interesting than Sting-ding! Also, I'm rather sick of "Drive My Car" as I really feel it is one of the most overplayed Beatles songs (especially considering that it was never a "hit single").
Last night's performance of "Get Back" by Lenny Kravitz was also surprisingly good from my point of view. He did a rather straightforward rendition of the song, but played with an energy that was lacking from Sting the night before.
What will we hear from Sean tonight? How about I Am The Walrus? That would be cool.
Don't think we should expect any surprise appearances by Paul or Ringo as they were interviewed by Letterman on Tuesday, I believe. As confirmed by someone else here, it will be part of the Sunday night "Grammy" broadcast on CBS.

Sean Lennon's Letterman appearance with Flaming Lips was another disappointment for me last night. I had seen Sean make a surprise appearance last summer at Bob Dylan's show, where he played guitar and wailed away singing "Yer Blues" and "Tomorrow Never Knows" -- now THAT was cool! This version of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was really poor.
On a positive note, I liked the way they've duplicated the original 1964 Ed Sullivan marquee outside the Letterman studio.

I thought The Flaming Lips and Sean Lennon's performance last night one of the greatest Beatles-related performances since the Rooftop session. Very edgy, it is how the Plastic Ono Band would have performed "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" in 1969 if John was so inclined.
I do agree Dave is going through the motions in trying to drum up Beatles excitement, him and that freak of nature band director he has. I am sorry that Letterman has been made a part of the CBS Special Sunday night. He is worn out, overly-sarcastic and mean. Not the guy to promote the joy of the anniversary.

A shame Letterman didn't at least leave enough time to talk with him.

I was surprised Lenny Kravitz did Get Back, a Paul song. He is such friends with Sean and Yoko.
I've enjoyed all of the Letterman shows and believe it was a fine tribute to the Beatles. Dave is a Beatle's fan and certainly Paul is a big fan. I wouldn't had minded seeing the Fab Faux play.
I like Paul Shaffer a lot. Although I'm not too interested in seeing one of his everybody on stage, everybody gets a solo and a verse and the song goes on forever spectacles.

Your remark is what causes threads to become "train wrecks" or fights. Not because I had a negative opinion of this weak tea Letterman tribute. The last thing we need at this time of the special Beatles' 50th is a quarrel. But you started it, I didn't. If any ONE person who rereads what I wrote agrees with you that I was being needlessly critical of you, rather than having fun, or that I wrote a post that was snarky or that I was starting a quarrel, I WILL be surprised. No offense was given, but offense was taken. If we were talking about sexual harassment, I'd be guilty because the intention of the sender is irrelevant. But, that's not we're talking about. It was a tease that should have been and could have been taken as so, but was chosen not to be taken that way.

There's a lot of sarcasm floating around, including the post Joe took offense to...read it objectively, you'll see it.
