Joe, don't get so nervous, the Beatles legacy is secure as the world's best Pop band! The Stones get to claim being the world's best Rock and Roll Band which is a narrower genre.
Like I said earlier - As a Beatles fan I have nothing to be nervous or defensive about.
Stones fans are the ones more defensive and frustrated by living under the Beatles' greatness.
I am sorry I hit some nerves and the "facts" you cite are just opinions, like us arguing which is more melodic, "Maxwell" or "Wild Horses."
You did not hit any nerves on me.
However, it's clear that I completely jostled you, ever since I called The Stones' "the Beatles' little brothers".
Sorry, though - I did cite actual facts before. Things like "Ob La Di' having its own A-Side single in 1976, and such. The innovative and overwhelming power of PEPPER is a historical factoid, not some opinion of mine; for it's not even among my personal favorite Beatles albums.
A fan can love both bands. The Beatles vs. Rolling Stones is very 1965!
In reality, I am one of the few people who DOES enjoy both bands. I love the Beatles, and I "like" the Rolling Stones.. but I do enjoy them both, unlike many of diehard fans in either band's corner(s). So you're speaking to the wrong guy on this. I've already told you how much of the Stones' music I like, and own.
Back to the start of my first post, the Stones got burned following the Pepper path because though Pepper is a good album, it was an ultimate dead end and that is not even controversial.
This whole "PEPPER Bashing" fad is relatively new. With few exceptions like the 1968 article you showed us, PEPPER was much praised until only recently.
It does not bother me in the least that PEPPER was a "one trick pony" type of departure LP.
The Beatles returned the favor and followed the Stones and got back to where they once belonged by Hey Jude/Revolution and the White Album, going back to the basics. That is just one example.
I don't agree that The Beatles ever followed the Stones.
I am sure the Stones are happy not to have a Stonesfest(although I am sure there is something) as one need only look at some of the geeky Beatles fans at Beatlefest(or whatever it is called these days) and one could rightfully think one is at Star Trek Fest or Eddie Munster Fest, not to mention that peace and love flies out the door there as fans fight over flea market items in a very greedy, capitalistic way!
Weak and desperate response to somehow substantiate the fact that The Rolling Stones just do not possess the level of excitement and fandom to ensure annual Fests all year round through 43 years.
