This is a Thread to discuss the The Beatles (White Album) Super Deluxe Edition which came out November 9, 2018.
I have now had the chance to listen to all of it and generally like the 2018 remix and the bonus material. I will go into specifics in subsequent posts. I do think the "White Album" has been criminally under-appreciated and is so much better than the bloated, dated Sgt. Pepper album and the over-slick Abbey Road.
What does the gang think of this release? There is a lot to discuss! Even if you just got the three Disc version, jump in! It would be fun to read everyone's thoughts on the 2018 stereo remix!

I have had the box for a week, but unfortunately haven't listened to much of it yet.
Nonetheless, I think I mentioned on another thread how good I thought Sour Milk Sea could have been if completed by the Beatles, or George solo. It makes me depressed to think that song is not properly represented in the Beatles/Solo canon.
I was wondering if there is such a thing as the single version (take) of Revolution being available without the inherent distortion? It does not seem to be included in the present box.
Overall, I like the packaging of this release more than that of the Sgt. Pepper box. The latter was just ridiculously big, IMO, though undeniably visually beautiful.
I am hopeful that this release is an indication that Abbey Road and Let It Be boxes are coming in 2019 and 2020. After that, they can backtrack and address the rest of the studio albums.

I've listened to the whole deluxe package in the car. I like some of the new mixes better but not all. Once the newness rubs off of the new release, I'm sure I will like the 2009 mixes better on most tracks.
I'll need to listen to rest of the album again at home, with headphones, so I can take notes.
Off the top of my head:
I like the alt I'm So Tired, with the acid guitar riffs. It sounds a little familiar, like I might have it (or a version of it) already.
I liked the alt Helter Skelter fast version and the slow version seemed better than the Anthology version; less plodding.

The former is based on our individual taste but the latter will be dictated by Apple! Is the 2009 Pepper and WA still being manufactured and sold or have both been replaced forever more by the 2017 Pepper and the 2018 WA?? Debjorgo, you are referring to the two versions of "I'm So Tired" on Disc 6, Sessions, correct? I was rather weary by the time I got to those and I need to go back and listen to those acid guitar riffs! That is one of my white album favorites. My memory is I liked the 2018 Stereo Remix of it.

Okay, here are three things I think Giles Martin really messed up on in this 2018 Re-mix of the White Album and I reserve the right to post more as I dig deeper into this release:
1. "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey:" Great remix in general with John's lead vocal seemingly brought up in the mix and so powerful but at the 1:55 minute mark, John's climatic "Hey!" is pushed back in the mix! That "Hey!" is the emotional climax of John's entire vocal and now is more buried than in any other version! That should have exploded out of our speaker and grabbed us by the collar!
2. "Birthday:" Again a pretty good re-mix with guitars, drums and bass exploding out of our speakers as does Paul's frantic vocal. But John's also very cool vocal contribution, "Yes we're going to a party, party....." is more subdued and buried than in any version ever! This should have been a "Long Long Long" moment(one of the superb remixes on this) with John's vocal bit brought forward as much as possible! The best version ever is the 1976 Mix on the Rock-And-Roll compilation album where old George Martin brought it forward much more! This is a big deal as John's vocal contribution has been almost sabotaged here! It is farther back than ever in the Mix!
3. "Helter Skelter:" The song itself seems okay but why did Giles Martin actually push Ringo's awesome exclamation, "I've got blisters on me fingers!" way back in the mix!? It is almost gone now! That is iconic, that scream should rattle our rooms blasting out of our speakers. I allege it is more buried than ever!
Overall I quite like this WA reissue but these were my first three concerns and I think they are legitimate.

Yeah. I'm So Tired (Take 14). I don't have this version anywhere else unless it's on a cassette somewhere.

Haven't bought the album yet (Santa Claus is bringing it), but I went to hear Bruce Spizer talk about the White Album tonight - bought his book about it to put with the album under the tree! Talk was pretty interesting but nothing Revolution-ary.

Two huge winners on the 2018 Re-mixed White Album are "Long Long Long" and "Goodnight."
Other songs are stunning but those two just got elevated to the Beatles' Major League!

Disc 4 of the WA50 Box is really cool with the various takes of "Revolution" and "Goodnight." The guitar version of "Goodnight" is outstanding as we hear the other Beatles singing in the background.
Unlike many, I like the slower version of "Helter Skelter" here and in a later Disc we get an alternate run-through of the faster version. Fascinating material, The Beatles sound like a real band to me in this material!

I just got it for Xmas. I've listened to the disc with the Esher songs. I had heard a few in bootleg before, but these are so much better. It really is "THE BEATLES UNPLUGGED". I've also read much of the booklet. Fascinating. I think the myth of this album being filled with tension is going to be adapted after this. Seems like there was tension, but also lots of good fun and creative times too!

And I thought "Long Long Long" already got a huge upgrade on the last re-mastering. You could actually here it! It had been a song I rated quite low prior to that. Now I consider it George's stepping stone into the type of music he plays on ALL THINGS MUST PASS. Look forward to hearing it on this release!

I am sick! My copy of the Deluxe Beatles White Album is ruined. So is My Imagine John Lennon book that I purchased around the same time. Pages molded and stuck together. I'll have to throw them out. The Beatles No. 0002422, out of commission.
I had them both on the floor in front of my DVD bookcase. I guess they got wet when I mopped.
I've reordered. I'd have to be pretty destitute and unemployed not to want to replace them.

My Boxes are on my carpeted floor around my CD bookcase as they are too big to store on it! God, I don't think any water will come close to them unless my dog pees on them! You have our sympathy Debjorgo because even though they can be replaced, as you noted, WA50 #0002422 is out of commission. Hey, the Discs are all still good aren't they? You'll obviously keep those as an extra set!

I'm scared to death that a porch pirate, who's been jamming to Ringo's new album, will snatch this too.

Amazon bumped my delivery up to today. I took off from work at 10:30 - 11:00 or so to be here when it arrived. It got here at 5:50 pm.
No.0056984. (or No.0056983 if you consider 0002422 is dead)

Your troubles debjorgo but then resolution of WA50 Deluxe caused me to pull mine out and my God, I really, really enjoyed Discs 4 to 6 of bonus material! I mean like really enjoyed them!
I think a year ago I just played those at home and I was busy reading the WA Book or on the internet reading about it. I just put those 3 Discs on my iPod Touch this week and played them in my car where I can really jam. They were amazing!
The Beatles Rocked harder on these alternate takes than they were permitted to on the released versions. Those boys could Rock!
