The exciting news from south Liverpool is that Santa will be bringing me a pair of Sennheiser HD202 headphones for Xmas, which I can plug into our Kenwood CD player, so I can start to sample a couple of remasters early in the New Year!! Hopefully the White Album will be another seaonal gift - so I will be able to see what all the fuss is about! I don't think I'll be attempting anything as scientifically adventurous as Vectis' simultaneous sampling of pre and post remaster sound, but I'll let you know what I think.

My ears were surprised at how little difference remastering makes. It's one of the music industries few remaining money making ploys.... Whats next for us eager Beatle aficionado's Must be listening to them on one of these... ;D

My Beatles 'Christmas Box' set (re-mastered 'Rubber Soul', 'Revolver', 'Sgt. Pepper' and 'Abbey Road') arrived yesterday from Amazon and I've just spent twenty minutes comparing and contrasting a few tracks from Rubber Soul just to begin to get a feel for the difference between the old 1987 versions and the new, sparkly re-masters. The re-mastered Rubber Soul sounds great. It's difficult to imagine how you could realistically improve on the sound presented. Compared with the 1987 version? -- I was actually surprised how well the old CD stood up, to be honest. The main area of difference was in the vocals where the re-master has a crisper more natural, open sound - especially in the treble range - without any harshness. Overall, the re-master sounds a shade more focused and has a bit more detail... ...there's not a vast difference, however - and I'm quite sure the casual listener wouldn't notice anything. Mrs. woolie, for instance, would definitely just shrug her shoulders if I played her a couple of tracks back-to-back. We Beatles fans are so anal. Having said all that, my 1987 'White Album' is an absolute clunker and I'm expecting a far greater improvement with that re-master. Just a couple of other observations: - The packaging is excellent - just right. Nicely presented, decent booklet, good photos, smart-but-unfussy cardboard case. I like the fact that the disc itself is a replica of the original record label. Great. Wasn't sure about booklet notes -- a bit stodgy and uninspiring -- would the general record-buying public really give two hoots about the 'bouncing down' process? - At £28.00 for four CDs, the Christmas Box is excellent value for money. It's easy to slag Apple off for their various misdemeanours over the years -- however, all you can ask for is that the record company release stuff with the best possible sound, in good quality packaging, at a reasonable price. Tick, tick and tick. Good for Apple!

The wife was not feeling well and went to bed early Thursday night allowing me access to the stereo and I had a great experience with the 2009 remastered stereo Rubber Soul.
I take these remasters for granted until I play them and realize that John Lennon is now in my living room singing "Girl." Even "What Goes On" comes alive like never before. Amazing stuff.
