IMAGINE, Side 2
This is easy for me. The only song that thrills me on BPTR-2 is "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five." The rest is subpar to me except maybe "Helen Wheels" but sometimes that sounds off too.
On the other hand, I really like every single song on I-2. "How?" might be my favorite, I like the vulnerability of it. "How Do You Sleep" is brilliant even if it may go too far in its verbal assault but hey, life is a bitch sometimes. "Oh Yoko!" is just so joyous, something that can be rarely said about John's music.
John gives us five very good songs in a row.

Virtual tie here -- I like every song on both sides.
I'll give it to Imagine Side 2 for Gimme Some Truth.

Imagine 2 has one great song - How Do You Sleep. The rest of the songs, for me, are ordinary: nothing special. John Lennon's solo catalog from now on is mostly those sorts of songs. BOTR 2 has two songs I quite like: Helen Wheels (a genuine Macca rock song), and 1985 (I like the way the song drives with an un-Macca-like urgency. Of the other three, two are "shrug" songs, and one (Picasso's Last Words) is very poor. But on balance, I have to give this l'il vote to - Macca. McCabe

Imagine - it's a great side of the album. Although 1985 is a great song and Helen Wheels one of those rockers that has you tapping feet this side of BOTR cannot beat Imagine.

Imagine
I don't care for How Do You Sleep, but I very much like Gimme Some Truth and Oh Yoko, and Oh My Love and How are simply exquisite.
And while I love BOTR overall, side 2 has No Words and Picasso's Last Words which are very good, Mamunia which is a bit drippy, Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five which is overblown tat, and Helen Wheels WHICH DOESN'T BELONG ON BOTR so I discount it.

BOTR - side 2
The funny thing is, I don't really rate either of these sides. McCartney's lacks substance -- the songs are slick and ooze newly-found confidence, but none are top drawer Macca. 'Gimme some truth' is a great side-opener from Lennon. However, 'Oh my love' is good-but-sappy, 'How' is good but very sappy and 'Oh Yoko' is trite and sappy. 'How so you sleep', meanwhile, is turgid and mean-spirited.
I would give both sides two stars. Flip a coin, it comes up for Macca.

Like several here, I really like "Gimme Some Truth" and George's blistering guitar solo. Yesterday, I was messing about on YouTube and came across a Get Back-session video of The Beatles working on this song and it is fascinating! Paul was really digging it, working on what would have been an awesome harmony vocal although they were repeating forever, "money for rope, money for rope" and John hadn't added the word "dope" to it yet. I'm sure most here have seen it and I have boots with bits of the song on it but this was the most thorough run-through I had ever come across of The Beatles performing GST! I think during Get Back, more up-tempo songs were welcomed!

I have said from the first round that there would come a time I would not vote for IMAGINE side 2 because it includes the dreadful, depressing, immature and pathetic "How Do You Sleep". This is the round where that will happen.
I love "Gimme Some Truth", "Oh My Love" and "Oh Yoko" and "How" is also above average. On BOTR 2 I love "1985" and "Helen Wheels". I think "Picasso's Last Words" is brilliant. "Mamunia" is above average. "No Words" is OK.
Through four best songs this is a close one, probably even a slight edge to IMAGINE, but "How Do You Sleep" makes it a comfortable win for BOTR side 2.

the dreadful, depressing, immature and pathetic "How Do You Sleep". Oh, just say it's only because it's about Paul.
Oh, just say it's only because it's about Paul.
JoeK, We've had this discussion before. It being about Paul does make it worse for me. But I wouldn't like it even if it wasn't about Paul. I think that the song is very petty and childish and frankly not very clever. John was capable of much better. Poorly sung, cliched childish lyrics and a boring tune. I do like George's guitar though. The interplay between John and Paul at this point was quite embarrassing and quite below each man's dignity, BTW glad to see BOTR has caught up!

BTW glad to see BOTR has caught up! Oh the BOTR Army is well organized and ruthless. It even throws under the bus all previous four Paul solo albums so hell bent on BOTR ruling the world. Mwahahahahahaha!

let's go to the points:
IMAGINE, Side 2
1. "Gimme Some Truth" 10 a should have been Beatle classic 2. "Oh My Love" 9.5 makes you wonder if there is a version of Imagine stll out there with George acoustics. 3. "How Do You Sleep?" 8.5 not offended by the song and love the music, but the topic of the song makes it "dated". 4. "How?" 9 I like this "soft" John better than a lot of the pop on Mind Games 5. "Oh Yoko!" 8 a cool song, but again too topical.
BAND ON THE RUN, Side 2
1. "Mamunia" 8.5 2. "No Words" 9.5 lots of Denny Laine 3. "Helen Wheels" 9.5 hit formula- not really an album cut 4. "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)" 9 always liked the Mrs. Vanderbilt coda in the song 5. "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five" 9 dated but a great tune
This is a virtual tie... but the edge goes to Imagine for George's presence on three tracks

Mwahahahahahaha! Not quite; RAM 1 still survives and was tied for the most votes in the first two rounds. Of course, it may have drawn extremely weak competition, but them's the breaks. JcS

I went for Imagine S-2
I like Gimme Some Truth although it was a forebeaerer for SINYC, HDYS we've already discussed, the rest of the soft songs I like too, especially How ?, definitely overdone by Phil Spector on the strings but a nice little song which I didn't appreciate on first listening.
Paul's BOTR-2 has the brilliant 1985, I think that's Paul's most amazing production in his solo career and brilliantly sung. I never cared for Mamunia and No Words and Picasso are ok too. Helen Wheels is a great rock song that Paul himself refuses to sing it's praises as he never performs it but the best version is on the bonus disc of the 25th Anniversary edition.

Interesting seeing those two sides side by side. If you could combine the best of them you'd have a nice Beatles album side.

I decided to stretch the lead for BOTR 2, as the voting ends later today.
I don't love "Picasso" or "Mamunia"--although there are times the latter is more endearing to me than at others--but the other three on the side are all top-flight. I adore "No Words," and it is my admiration of it that probably tips the side to Paul.
On IMA 2, I like "Oh Yoko" a lot, and "Oh My Love" and "Gimme Some Truth" are both better than average. But after the opening couplet of "How," it descends into a bunch of trite sentiments, and I can go the rest of my life without listening to the moronic "How Do You Sleep" and probably be quite content. Just as my feeling of "No Words" helps BOTR 2, my opinion of "How Do You Sleep" weighs down IMA 2 to such a point that "Oh Yoko" can't help it recover to win this match.

No, it would have meant that I didn't vote, and IMAG 2 would have moved on. But this particular match was up for a week, so I don't feel too bad about my vote counting toward the total. JcS
