RUBBER SOUL, Side 2
"What Goes On" 2:50 "Girl" 2:33 "I'm Looking Through You" 2:27 "In My Life" 2:27 "Wait" 2:16 "If I Needed Someone" 2:23 "Run for Your Life" 2:18

RS 2 got past MMT 1 by at 9-7 score, while AR 2 took out LIB 2 by a 15-5 count.
The number of voters have dropped as we've gone along--that's not too unusual, but it means that as soon as I'm convinced this match is settled, I'm going to close down this round and move us to the final four. I know I'll leave it here for at least four days and/or until the discussion dies down.

AR2, as I love the whole side, including the medley, but I skip "Run For your Life".

Easy . Well I love the Rubber Soul/Revolver era. But AR2 beats RS2 easily here/

This ought to be an interesting contest. But even as I write, AR2 is well ahead, and I'm betting it stays that way. But I'm not hoping AR2 wins. Let me outline my thoughts.
Abbey Road Side 2 It's "received wisdom" that Abbey Road is a work of pristine quality, and that it's Side 2 that is the more worthy. People all over the world rave about the genius or beauty or creativity of the Long Medley. Pardon me though: Genius? - at the mixing console. Beauty? - the songs are third-rate fragments in places, and when not fragments are 2nd/3rd rate complete pieces. Creativity? - a tired band knowing that it's all over, and its two "main-men" refuse to, or cannot, see that one of the others is often writing far, far better material than theirs.
Here is what I said earlier in the competition about AR2:
Rubber Soul Side 2 And Rubber Soul 2 has its hassles: here's what I said about it earlier -
But I'm voting for Rubber Soul Side 2: it belongs to the era when the Beatles were still ... a BAND, you know? All pulling together: writing, playing, arranging, creating. Rubber Soul Side 2 has some songs that don't quite measure up, it's true, and some that are mighty good. But it seems to me to be a far more honest side of music than the overblown and overrated AR2.
Honesty wins.

AR2 by a fairly comfortable margin for me. Song for song it may match up, though opening songs immediately give AR a huge advantage as "Here Comes The Sun" is not just one of George's best, but among the Beatles best while "What Goes On" from RS is weak. "Girl" and "Wait" are average. "Run For Your Life" is an excellent musical performance and vocal, but an average song. "In My Life" is on the short list of best Beatles songs. "I'm Looking Through You" and "If I Needed Someone" both outstanding as well. AR2 has such a great feel and the way the music all goes together and builds always excites me. "Here Comes The Sun" may be the only Beatles classic song, but all the rest is quite enjoyable. The sum being greater than the parts (much like the Beatles themselves). "The End" still gives me a rush every time I hear it. It seems to me that people are starting to downplay this side (too slick, not true songs, not honest(see above), etc) but I'm not buying it. For me it still works.

Rubber Soul - side 2
Over the years I have tired of the Abbey Road medley, and I can't really remember the last time I played side two all the way through and really enjoyed it. These days I'm far more likely to get a kick out of playing stuff like 'Rain' or 'Don't let me down' -- something rockier and punchier that delivers without all the spin and flannel.
As McCabe says, for all Abbey Road's medley's technical accomplishments, it is still an assemblage of song fragments, which are fairly average by the Beatle's standards. I'm afraid, for me, the slickness of the production and the cleverness of the editing doesn't compensate for the lack of any really great songs...
...and the point about the Beatles still being a cohesive and united group at the time of Rubber Soul does have relevance. On Abbey Road the sticking plaster is just about holding the piece together, whereas Rubber Soul is the product of a band very much at the top of their game and still getting a huge buzz out of making music together.

Rubber Soul - side 2As McCabe says, for all Abbey Road's technical accomplishments, it is still an assemblage of song fragments, which are fairly average by the Beatle's standards. So did John Lennon.

RUBBER SOUL, Side 2
For reasons close to those expressed by J. McCabe and Woolie.
It does amaze me that AR-2 came out so slick and polished when those guys hated each others' guts by then.

ABBEY ROAD, Side 2Gosh, this was so hard for me to choose 'cause I love the older songs so much. But I really don't like "What Goes On" and I like the whole side of Abbey Road, especially "Here Comes The Sun" and "Because." JCV

AR 2 for me. The Long Medley works, and I adore "Here Comes The Sun." I love "In My Life" and "I'm Looking Through You," but there's enough second tier stuf on RS 2 to make this a pretty easy call.
