Two great sides. But I gotta go with Revolver, song-for-song the greatest Beatles album in my opinion. Or maybe I should say for my tastes.

Rubber Soul 1 A great side of music, no doubt about that. From the stunning opener Drive My Car, to The Word, we have six very classy songs. [Note that the seventh song Michelle is a bit of a limp ending - those lyrics - ugh.] Clearly this is a different Beatles, introducing themselves; it will lose them fans, but gain them a whole lot more.
Revolver Side 2 But this side of music is a whole new game. This is the same creative band as above, but now at the height of their powers. Just consider for a moment the great love song For No One from Macca, and that stunning tour-de-force from Lennon, Tomorrow Never Knows. And everything else on that side is pretty good too!
Revolver2 gets the vote.

RS1
I like every song on this side, although I'm a bit wavery about Think For Yourself and The Word.
On Revolver 2 I'm indifferent about Dr Robert, I don't like the dissonances in I Want To Tell You, and I've never been keen on Tomorrow Never Knows. Tibetan monks on a mountain top indeed. Pretentious pillock.

REVOLVER 2 as I dislike For No One less than I dislike You Won't See Me. Otherwise it's a coin flip.

Revolver Side 2
Both brilliant but both with weaknesses.
Don't like You Won't See Me and Think For Yourself on RS-1 and I think Good Day Sunshine doesn't belong on Revolver at all, should have been the B-side to Paperback Writer and Rain should have opened Side 2 of Revolver. The rest of the songs on Rev - 2 are brilliance personified.

REVOLVER, Side 2
I need to be in the right mood for "You Won't See Me." I am not the most ardent fan of "Think For Yourself" and "The Word," well I'll paraphrase J. McCabe who said as to "Bungalow Bill" that John can be embarrassing when he is obvious. I think John and the lads are too obvious on "The Word." I guess it is proto-hippie so that might be worth some points.
Revolver-2 is excellence. Even "Dr. Robert." I am finally reading Pattie Boyd's book and coupled with my recent reading of Tony Sanchez's book on the Stones(with many John Lennon drug anecdotes), it was amazing the doctor's, dentists, etc. who wanted to turn on The Beatles to curry their favor. "Dr. Robert" is based on the then reality. It is an honest song that also rocks.
I truly wish that "Paperback Writer/Rain" were on this album.

I'd give it to George's "Love You To." That way, I'd only have to skip it when I played PAST MASTERS! JcS

Revolver side 2
I like the guitars in And Your Bird Can Sing and the Concert for George reminded me what a good song I Want To Tell You is so those 2 things persuaded my vote... ;D

I love this track. You must mean the lyrics are obvious because I reckon the singing and instrumentation are brilliant. PS - BTW, the 1969 Fabs pic on your posts looks to me like it has been mirrored...

Revolver-2
Both album sides are excellent. However, contests between Rubber Soul and Revolver are always going to come out in favour of Revolver. The reason? Whichever way you look at it, Rubber Soul is the prototype and Revolver is the finished article.

Seems a shame to have these two sides meet this early, but it was a fairly easy choice to go with REVOLVER side 2.
COMMENTS: I agree this is the first time I've ever heard anyone say they didn't like "For No One". I consider this Paul's best lesser known song (lesser known to the general public that is). "The Word" is fantastic in terms of music. I do get the comments concerning lyrics however, though I think it fits as sort of a "pre summer of love" type of message. "Good Day Sunshine" I think fits well and is an excellent side opener. I would love a 16 song REVOLVER with "Rain" and "Paperback Writer". Both "Think For Yourself" and "I Want To Tell You" are songs I enjoy more now than I did when I first heard them. Good, but not great Harrisongs. "Michelle" may not be a perfect side ender, but I like the acoustic guitar and it is well sung. I still prefer "I've Just Seen A Face" to open RUBBER SOUL and give it that immediate "folk/rock feel, though "Drive My Car" is a fantastic song. One of the Beatles best in terms of how each instrument sounds. "Doctor Robert" is just fantastic musically and the harmonies. Lyrics aren't much though. It conclusion, it occurs to me that I like every song on both of these album sides. Five unquestioned classics ("Norwegian Wood", "Nowhere Man", "For No One", "And Your Bird Can Sing" and "Tomorrow Never Knows") several just below that level ("Drive My Car", "The Word", "Good Day Sunshine", "Doctor Robert" and "Got To Get You Into My Life") and the rest above average. In short, a fantastic era for the Beatles!

But the position of "b side" was not considered in the same way in '66. Singles were held in higher regard and the flip siide often got significant airtime.

It's just too much of a downer for me ( same with "Eleanor Rigby" and "She's Leaving Home"). Just my own personal hang-up - don't mind me!

Whoo! I think by a tiny fraction RS is not quite there and Revolver gets my vote. Even though both sides sort of represent the start and the end of a Beatles epoch. Brilliant stuff. There is not a single track on either side I skip when listening.

I took REVOLVER 2. Both have great opening triplets of songs, but REV 2 doesn't lose any steam as it barrels toward the end of the side, whereas "The Word" and "Michelle" don't measure up to the rest of the side. Plus, REV 2 has "For No One," which could tilt the contest in its favor almost singlehandedly.

I think both 'The word' and 'Wait' are under-valued by many Beatles fans. Both are enjoyable and still sound fresh to my ears.

No strong feeling either way. So, I added up each song as a 1, 2, or 3. Result? Dead even. So, again, I cannot vote. Too close to call.
