I’ve not done a tournament here in awhile, so I thought I’d bring this one to this board. For those not familiar with the concept, the entries in the tournament face off like a tennis match, with the winner advancing to the next round and the loser being eliminated from the contest. So, in this match, you are to pick your favorite from these two sides, and the winner will move on to Round 2.
This is an “album side” tourney. The idea is to pit the 27 sides of vinyl (I’ve omitted the second side of YELLOW SUBMARINE) released by the Beatles against each other to determine, once and for all, which single side was the best of this stellar lot.
I’ve included MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR, since it was the standard worldwide release, save in the UK, from 1967, and even in England from 1976. You can vote against it using the theory that “it wasn’t really an album” but you can’t eliminate it from the competition by whining about it.
The poll feature will be used so as to provide a running total; if you happen to vote against one and realize you misclicked, just let me know. However, the reason for these games are to generate discussion about the albums. Simply clicking the poll option is permitted, but I’d prefer you at least say what you picked; it is even better if you say WHY you made a particular choice. I’ll try to post 2 or 3 of these a week, depending on my schedule and the amount of discussion going on.
In the first round, I gave five sides a pass to the second round. Side one of A HARD DAY’S NIGHT, REVOLVER and THE BEATLES, as well as Side 2 of MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR and ABBEY ROAD. The remaining 22 will be culled to 11 after the first round, and these five sides will be added to the mix. The seeding in the first round was done by a random sequence generator; I had to move a side of The White Album away from another side of that disc, but otherwise, the pairings are what the computer program gave me. Enjoy!

Oh man, this is a killer right off the bat. I must think about this.
I will be a fierce advocate for The White Album, Side 4 to win it all. I am still licking my wounds about Joey's decision to exclude Yellow Submarine, Side 2. Sir George Martin's soundtrack music kicks butt. Many a kid in the late Sixties thought he/she was getting their dose of "classical music" by playing that Side! ;D
I encourage all to play and as Joey said, discusssion is always more fun than mere vote tallies but that is important too since this Board is deciding for all time what the strongest Beatles' album side is!
Thanks Joey!

Great idea for a tournament, Joey. I was on auto-pilot to hit the vote-for-AHDN button, but I checked myself and am going away to have a think about it. This one's not a gimme!

I've voted for A Hard Day's Night..
I think the songs are better on AHDN , they are Beatle songs , there are too many covers on Beatles for Sale even if they are well played and performed.
John was on fire on AHDN.....

Woolie, I had the same reaction; I was about to check AHDN 2, and then decided I wanted to wait a bit. The four originals on BFS 2 are very nice indeed. JcS

A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, Side 2
I went with AHDN-2 primarily because of the covers on BFS-2. Those covers are fun but AHDN is all original and thus special.
In terms of songs to cherish and love, the nod for me again is AHDN-2 as I love "Any Time at All," "Things We Said Today," "You Can't Do That" and "I'll Be Back."
On BFS-2 I love "Eight Days a Week," "Every Little Thing" and "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party."
Really though, two great sides and BFS is stronger than CW seems to give it.

The AHDN side got my vote but by a more narrow margin than I would have thought before actually looking at the songs (having grown up with the American LP's I don't have the sides memorized).
Both have some of my favorites (Things We Said Today, I'll Be Back vs Eight Days A Week, What You're Doing) one just below that level (Any Time At All and Words Of Love) and the rest are slightly above, below or at average level. The decider for me was AHDN had all originals.
John, You can't be serious about Side 4 of The White Album? That is one I can guarantee I will not vote for.

This is a nice "lunch time" diversion . I have to go with AHDN too! Not a weak number in the bunch (in spite of what many people say about "When I Get Home", I love its infectious vocals!). BFS2 is good, but after the rousing start of "Eight Days a Week", "Words of Love" really is a buzz kill.

After much careful deliberation, AHDN - 2. In the end, AHDN 2 just has more energy. It's infectious...it strutts its stuff. It oozes confidences and bravado. You gotta go with the flow...

AHDN, since it's all originals.

I joined the crowd at AHDN 2, and for many of the reasons already expressed. The four originals on BFS 2 are all good ones; I feel the trio sandwiched between Ringo and George's covers are a bit overlooked in the Beatles' canon (if there truly is such a thing as an overlooked Beatles song, that is). But there are only the four, and I'm not wild about any of the cover tracks--all were serviceable, nice enough filler, but that's it.
On AHDN 2, we have "Things We Said Today" and "You Can't Do That," both great tracks and a quartet of other good songs. I'm one that is not too high on "When I Get Home" but when a song like that is the low point, it points out the strength of the side as a whole.
And ultimately, that last sentence made the difference--the second side of AHDN just flows better to me than BFS 2. Since it is a "side" tournament, I will often take that into consideration, and that causes AHDN 2 to win by a slight margin--surprisingly so, I must say.

If I read/interpreted what I read right, six of us have opined that the choice wasn't easy, but all of us have gone for AHDN 2 so far...

AHDN-2
I like the energy and flow of AHDN-2 whereas the covers bring down BFS-2.

BFS 2 now has two votes, but no comments from those that picked it. Whoever you are, you're among friends, speak your mind! JcS

I went for BFS. The guitar work is more interesting, as are the harmonies, IMO.

I went for BFS. The guitar work is more interesting, as are the harmonies, IMO. Good call on both issues, Steve! When I first saw the pairing here I thought that it would be a no-brainer but not so fast. BFS-2 has real quality moments. BFS is my wife's favorite Beatles' album and as many here know, she is often indifferent but sometimes brutal on the Fabs(really their solo material more than group stuff). She loves the harmonies that Steve mentioned but also that undertone of C & W(mixed with rockabilly). Her pick of this album as her favorite made me re-examine it. If only "I Feel Fine" and "She's A Woman" had been included and maybe "Leave My Kitten Alone," then no one would ever think of slighting it!

If those 3 songs were included and replaced Mrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Moonlight , Honey Don't and Everybody's Trying to Be Me Baby, BFS would be a Top 100 Rolling Stone album.

I've always admired For Sale, but not as much as AHDN, which I think is a classic.
Side 2 is the weaker side for both these albums, but still AHDN Side 2 wins.
(BTW, the heading for this thread has "AHDN 1" - ie, side 1 as the entrant in this match up. It's really Side 2 as all have discovered.)

HDNs2. All Lennon/McCartney and mostly great tracks(and even the lesser ones are good). BFS has quality stuff but after this LP of all Original Tracks seemed like a set back for the first time in the Fabs Great Career.

AHDN 2. A completely excellent side, including When I Get Home. Suprisingly close, the second side of BFS has some great songs, but Words of Love and What you're dong can best be described as filler, which AHDN lacks.
