There is a WORLD of difference between Greatest and Favourite. I'm using the words inter-changably here. Thats why I worded the title "the greatest of MY lifetime." The ones that had the most impact on me. As opposed to some mythical "greatest of all time" list. As if theres some kind of objective standard that any of us could agree on.

I was born in 1958: 1. The Beatles (Individually Lennon and McCartney are equals and if solo would share #1; George would make honorable mention) 2. Ray Davies (The Kinks) 3. Pete Townshend (The Who) 4. Jonathan Richman 5. Nick Drake
Honorable Mention: Paul Simon, REM, U2, John Mellancamp, Neil Young, Syd Barrett, Chrissie Hynde, The Ramones, The Byrds, The Yardbirds, The Zombies, Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), Eric Carmen (the Raspberries), Green Day, CCR (John Fogerty), Jeff Lynne (ELO)
I guess I should add the Stones, but I think they are so overrated sometimes ("World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band").
I'll add Dylan but only as a writer.
And I'm sure I'm forgetting someone important too.
Music is what affects me most so my entire list is musical performers

I'd be curious who your favorites are and how you rate the Beatles in the great pantheon of 20th century artists. I've been thinking of what "greatest artists" in the thread title means. Trouble is, I can't abide some of them - Sinatra comes to mind. So I'll shift the meaning a bit if I may Acebackwards to "great and who I like". I think that's what you want - you did say favourites in the quote above. So here goes: Popular MusicBob Dylan, first and foremost. Greatest songwriter of the 20th century, HUGE influence on a generation (mine luckily). Should win the Nobel Prize for literature. Make it soon, you guys on the committee. The Beatles, obviously - at least on a Beatles board. Others include Led Zeppelin, Cream, Black Sabbath. Oh, and John Lennon and George Harrison The Rest - Sport, Literature, PhilosophyBertrand Russell one of the greatest thinkers of all time, he spanned the last quarter of the 19th century and two-thirds of the 20th. If you don't know about this man, look his details up. Don Bradman will almost certinly be unknown to non-cricket-playing nations. However, he averaged almost a century each time he batted in a test-innings: this is outrageously amazing (nearest batsman is I think around 70 average). Find out about him. Others include Alexander Alekhine (chess: an extraordinarily aggressive player); Spike Milligan (comedian); Laurence Olivier (actor). And can I say also my husband - a great mate, friend, lover, supporter, father to our children. Maybe not an artist in the sense intended - but I had to get a plug in. Still love him.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who liked Puffy! I still like 'em - 16 years this year. There was a new album last year to mark the 15th anniversary (and another collection at the turn of last year) but not much this year as Yumi Yoshimura is expecting her first baby this summer at the age of 37!

I was only born in 1990 so it narrows my choices slightly. I'm sticking with the personal favourites and to those who were alive at the time of my birth (ugh!) which is annoying as most actors/authors I love were long dead by then even if they had works in the 20th century (bye Lennon, Elvis, Morecambe, Sellers, Chaplin, Hitchcock, Keaton, Fitzgerald, Woolf, Wodehouse, TS Eliot...)
So my (yes, it's unsurprisingly more than 5) choices are: Paul McCartney Neil Young Hugh Laurie Frank Sinatra Joni Mitchell James Stewart Spike Milligan Michel Gondry Katherine Hepburn Douglas Adams George Orwell

Luciano Pavarotti (the only one of my top five I had the honor to share the stage with) VERY VERY cool! When/where was this? In 1981 I sang the role of The King of Egypt in a production of AIDA with him at The San Francisco Opera. It is now available on DVD (the two leads were Pavarotti and M. Price). Also did Verdi's MASKED BALL with him in San Francisco in 1983.

One of the many reasons I list the great R. Crumb as one of my favorite artists: He's one of the few people to turn down both Hugh Hefner and Mick Jagger. Jagger tried to commission him to draw a Rolling Stones album cover after he did his classic Janis Joplin cover, but Crumb couldn't stand the Stones so he turned them down cold. (Later of course he regretted the decision: "Just think of all those hippie chicks I could've boned.")
Crumb also has a weird hatred for Bruce Springsteen. I think because Springsteen reminded him of this greaser guy in high school that used to beat him up. Crumb's a weird cat.

I can't think of anyone outside of music.
The Beatles - Paul, John, George, Ringo. Bob Dylan Elvis Presley Chuck Berry The Rolling Stones
If using Paul, John, George, Ringo is cheating, I don't mind cheating, if I can get away with it. If I can't, I would have to put Paul in 2nd, John in 3rd and everyone else would have to be pushed down.
Although I don't consider myself a country fan at all, but I would put Hank Williams and Johnny Cash in my top ten, along with Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd and Elton John.
