let's pretend that in 1969 you were handed over the job of creating the "Yellow Submarine" album you can't use any song released on any album before (except "Yellow Submarine") which means you have to take off "All you need is Love", you have to keep the new songs that are already one the album and the George Martin stuff won't be on it..using what you know about the rack they had in the vaults, what songs would you add to the album, basically it would be like "Hard Days Night" (UK version), "Magical Mystery Tour" and "Help (UK version)half soundtrack half new... have fun,,,,,Here's my version...
Side A.
1. Yellow Submarine 2. Only a Northern Song 3. All Together Now 4. Hey Bulldog 5. It's all too much 6. Not Guilty
Side B. 7. What's the new Mary Jane 8.Teddy Boy 9.Junk 10. You Know My Name (Look up the Number) 11. Circles 12. The Inner Light

Wow! You also had a lot of what became the Hey Jude (the Beatles Again) album. An album I always loved.
Paperback Writer, Rain (vastly underrated), Lady Madonna, Revolution, Hey Jude. Put Leave My Kitten Alone on it and the tea kettle explodes!

Was Old Brown Shoe too late to make it? It looks like it was recorded a few months after the album came out,,,

A very interesting assignment!
To me, the Yellow Submarine film project, including album, is the last "Hurrah" by The Beatles or their associates into the area of Psychedelic music.
I would insist on keeping "All You Need Is Love" on the album as that is too central to the theme of the movie. I would not include any of The Beatles "Back to the Basics Rock And Roll" songs on this movie soundtrack. They do not fit with the psychedelic vibe going on. Nor does early material.
Thus:
1. Yellow Submarine 2. Only a Northern Song 3. All Together Now 4. Hey Bulldog 5. Teddy Boy 6. It's all too much
1. Across The Universe(Wildlife version) 2. Not Guilty 3. Junk 4. You Know My Name (Look up the Number) 5. Circles 6. All You Need Is Love.
I could live with this as an album soundtrack. George has four songs!

This was a great theme, Josh! The Yellow Submarine album is such a missed opportunity by wasting Side 2 on George Martin instrumentals(sorry Sir George!). I think we all have nailed a very good soundtrack album(well 1/2 of one). I am sorry I bucked your rule on AYNIL but I had to have it. It is a shame that "Hey Bulldog" and "It's All Too Much" and even "All Together Now" got totally wasted on the real YS album! Those songs deserved a better fate and our albums suggested here would have rescued them. I forgot "The Inner Light" for my album and I would substitute it for "Circles" I believe. "Circles" is so dark to me. Or I could drop "You Know My Name" and add TIL giving George five songs!

I doubt it would be included om LIB if it'd been released already, albeit a different version. What's the new Mary Jane doesn't quite work on Let it Be. We'd be forced to include Don't Let Me Down, dirty verse and all.

LOL, good point Debjorgo about "Across The Universe" and weakening LIB but we were hired first to assemble the YS soundtrack album so tough luck Phil Spector, figure it out on your own! I will though let someone else tell Phil! Actually the way out of the dilemma here is to use the Wild life donated version as I proposed, that is my least favorite, with those female fans singing back-up vocals. Let Phil still release the Spectorized version for LIB as they sound different enough to satisfy the fans! I actually now yearn for such a YS as we have assembled! Apple?!

Lizzie Bravo and Gayleen Pease. I kind of feel like I know Lizzie. She is always making comments on all the Beatle's photo pages. She even responded to something I said on one once. I love the internet!

I hadn’t previously realised that there was a six month gap between the release of the movie in July 1968 and the album in January 1969.
Some of the songs featured in the movie are only fragments. According to Wikipedia, there are five. So, if you discounted these, I think that leaves 11 for a straight soundtrack album:
Yellow Submarine Eleanor Rigby All Together Now When I’m Sixty-Four Only A Northern Song Nowhere Man Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band All You Need Is Love Hey Bulldog It’s All Too Much
You can order them whatever way you like, but I think I would have preferred this to what was actually released. To me this makes a reasonably strong compilation, whereas the actual release, IMO, is weak.
If we try to come up with what josh has requested, then I would try to stick with uncollected 1968 released songs (like the U.S. MMT album) , plus a few of the unreleased ones. I would not include pre-1968 previously released songs. I don’t like the idea of repeating songs previously featured on studio albums, so no All You Need Is Love for me. I realise though that the inclusion of Yellow Submarine, the song, would pretty much be mandatory. So this is what I come up with:
Yellow Submarine R It’s All Too Much G Hey Bulldog J Only A Northern Song G All Together Now P
Lady Madonna P The Inner Light G Junk P Sour Milk Sea G Hey Jude P Revolution J Not Guilty G
I found it difficult for several reasons. There is not enough Lennon material to work with. I didn’t include Across The Universe, because of what debjorgo has already pointed out. You Know My Name was still being worked on well into 1969, so I discarded that. Not Guilty was not really finished, even though I like it as presented on the Anthology. I think they probably could have come up with a finished version of Sour Milk Sea in the time available. A studio/soundtrack Yellow Submarine album also messes up the prospects for a later Hey Jude studio album, which I am partial to.

All's fair in re-writing history. The Hey Jude album was a US Capitol album only anyway and Let it Be would have been better with Don't Let Me Down.

It was 48 years ago today, Scotland Yard stopped the band from playing.
