The John Lennon song ‘Now and Then’, considered but rejected for The Beatles Anthology series of 1995 and 1996, is finally going to be officially released. It will be released some time this year. Three songs, ‘Free As A Bird’, ‘Real Love’ and ‘Now and Then’ were considered for the Anthology. ‘Free As A Bird’ was released in Anthology 1 in November 1995. ‘Real Love’ appeared on ‘Anthology 2’ in March 1996. Paul McCartney said that he, George Harrison and Ringo Starr spent a day on ‘Now and Then’ for the Anthology but George didn’t like it as he felt it was too incomplete and by democratic vote, it was rejected for that project. The song was once again considered for release around 2005 but again rejected. What has changed now is the new technology available, developed by Sir Peter Jackson’s company to separate sounds into their own channel. Jackson used the technology on the ‘Get Back’ movie. Giles Martin used to on the recent ‘Revolver’ box set and has used it on his new remix of The Beach Boys ‘Pet Sounds’ album. I'm not a fan of this song but i'll be interested in what those working on the song have done with it. I don't quite get how or why Giles Martin has taken parts of the Beatles song Because and inserted them into the Now and Then tune, or so the rumour mill has been saying. Here is a link to a newspaper article about the song from Paul's perspective. www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jun/13/ai-used-to-create-new-and-final-beatles-song-says-paul-mccartneyHere is a band doing a cover version of Now and Then, it's quite well done, i think.

But I bet it will sound good at the end of Blue 1967-1970.....NOT! LOL! The Red Album has been improved. “Hey Bulldog” is a historical revisionist addition to the Blue Album but a good one as that song is much more liked now than in 1969. The other additions to the Blue Album, meh including “Now And Then.”

Now and Then has been released.
What did you think of it, is it crap like George might have said back in the 90's ?

YEAH! That is great! I can't say how much I love it. Whoever said "let's release the song without the video first" should be fired.

John Lennon's cleaned-up lead vocal is easily the coolest part of "Now And Then!"
I do not care for the "new" chorus where Paul McCartney joins in and I am not impressed with Macca's slide guitar solo.
Paul is trying to honor George Harrison with that slide guitar solo which is cool but man, I wish we had a Hari slide guitar solo like on "Free As A Bird!" That kicked ass!
In fact, the lack of more George Harrison on this recording is sad but George is the one who cut the 1995 Sessions short for whatever reason, whether he did not like the song itself as Paul has all but said for 23 years until just recently or whether George thought it was impossible with then technology to make John's vocal passable as Olivia Harrison says now.
The Peter Jackson video is really good but sorry, it did not make me cry like it is for most of the folks gushing about it on Facebook Beatles' sites. The "Hello Goodbye" John Lennon bits inserted in the video made me laugh which is cool!

Watching that clip and listening to the audio seems to make a big difference in how i perceive this tune. Well done to The Beatles organisation for the huge effort they put into it considering they didn't have much to work with, in terms of the song and the source material. I still don't rate the song highly but i don't believe it's as bad as i thought it was after my first listen.

.... I still don't rate the song highly but i don't believe it's as bad as i thought it was after my first listen. Saying that about a Beatles' song is damning enough, when you think about it.

Yeah, like debjorgo astutely observed, the idiot at Apple who decided to release the song one day ahead of the video should be fired! I have also found that "Now And Then" sounds much better in the car especially with a Fall backdrop as that is perfect for a sad, melancholy song! Of course, "Now And Then" is not a song to play if you need to jump-start a boring party!

Once the novelty of the new release wears off i'm wondering how often i will re-listen to this latest "Beatles" release. I hardly ever listen to FAAB or Real Love so i'll probably pop NAT in the same least listened to song folder that those 2 gems reside in. They won't be lonely, Maxwell lives there as well.

Probably 80% of the Beatles songs I have in iTunes are in 'Beatles only' playlists. (Ripped from CDs) I have 5 Beatle's playlists: Alt Beatles - the best of the Alternate tracks Beatles First 5 Top 10 - my favorites from the first 5 albums Beatles New - Remixes and alt tracks from the new releases of Sgt Pepper going forward. Beatles Record - All the Beatles' music. I'm gradually removing duplicates. Best Beatles - right now it has 36 songs, packed pretty tight. No room for anything more. I guess I'll put Now and Then in the Beatles New file but it is destined to be in Beatles Record only with the other two. I think I might have Real Love in my A Series Rock file. This is my 'go-to' all-music playlist but it has about 600 songs in it. I probably won't hear Real Love too often there.

Jump in OldFred, but I am getting word that fans of the Monkees are scoffing at The Beatles' "Now And Then" citing their band's "That Was Then, This Is Now" as being superior!

We have nearly half of them in common.
Back when FM radio was just becoming a thing, even before they had their Album Oriented Rock formats, one station in Louisville, WLRS, would play a lot of jazz/rock fusion type music. I wasn't terribly interested in that but it was something different from the same pop 40 music on AM radio. And if you stook around long enough, they'd throw in some pretty cool stuff, like the new Pink Floyd album (which was Dark Side of the Moon at the time).
One night, I'm up kind of late, with my radio at my ear, and they played The Night Before. Blew me away! I had a little extra respect for it after that.

What I posted on a Facebook private message group about the song and the video:
I did not have high expectations for the song, and it surpassed them.
I had high expectations for the video, and it failed to meet them.
Overall, I'm satisfied with both--not thrilled nor dejected, just satisfied.
And sometimes in life, that's enough.

Ringo Starr is requesting that us Yanks help propel "Now And Then" to #1 in the U.S. where it debuted at #7!
Let's go friends, buy it again even if you already have!

Number seven on Billboard sounds good enough for me.
Their 35th top ten hit. Go Beatles!
