Does John sing back-up vocals? I always listen closely, and just don't think that's him in the back.

Sure it's Lennon. Not only does it sound like him, he said it was him. He "co-wrote" it with Bowie.

I know he co-wrote it and played guitar-just sounds like Bowie backing himself up except for a few high "fames".

I think the co-writing credit is deceiving. I remember an interview with Bowie years ago that basically said that John really didn't contribute words and music, but his presence was so powerful and he influenced the song so much that it seemed to Bowie that John contributed to the writing. So, to honor that, he gave him a credit.

I hear John on backing vocals as well. Similar to the same period's "Lucy" cover with Elton John.

The only place I hear John is on the first "Is it any wonder?" I don't hear John on Elton's cover, but I'll try to listen closer next time.

I think he (Lennon) is more prominent on Lucy-especially on the live version.

The only place I hear John is on the first "Is it any wonder?" I don't hear John on Elton's cover, but I'll try to listen closer next time. I especially hear him in the reggae section (John's suggestion, I think)...after "Lucy in the Sky, with..." and then I hear John add the "Lucy" -- could be Elton, I guess, but that's just one spot where I've always thought it was Lennon.
