www.fancast.com/blogs/tv-news/paul-mccartney-to-appear-on-david-letterman/Paul McCartney to Appear on David LettermanWhen The Beatles made their U.S. TV debut on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ 45 years ago, Beatlemania ensued. Paul McCartney is set to return to the Ed Sullivan Theater, only this time it won’t be as historic. But it is the first time Sir Paul will appear on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman,’ when he drops by to chat with Dave and perform next Wednesday, July 15th. So, who was your favorite Beatle?

Paul had returned to the Ed Sullivan Theater in 1992 for the MTV Up-Close special, I was in the audience for that one. ;D But, yes, this will be the first time Paul will be appearing on the David Letterman Show at the Ed Sullivan Theater. Of course, Ringo beat him a couple of times previously. Interesting to note that the Letterman appearance will obviously reference the up-coming Citi Field shows. It's mindful when the Beatles taped an appearance for the Sullivan show prior to their Shea Stadium concert.

David seems more acerbic than usual to most of his guests, I wonder how he will treat Paul. I hope that David has some edge to him as I get bored with Macca inteviews by the likes of Jay Leno and Bob Costas who slobber all over Paul. Paul is the master at manipulating those folks.
Old Dave is crankier than even before so let's see if he has a little bite to his questions. Paul is pretty good in those situations too although he is not placed in that situation often(Howard Stern is an example).

Obviously it never made the bootleg or TV cuts. My guess is that it never happened?

According to what I've read, Paul will not only appear on the David Letterman Show tonight, he's going to perform on the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater as well. (And yeah, I can already hear the jokes of them shoring up the marquee for Abe!) The taping is at 5PM today and I'll try to be there to watch. ;D

Paul is the only guest listed on the official Letterman web site. It also has this info.....
Paul McCartney Makes His First Visit To The Late Show Wednesday, July 15th The legendary musician, who, as part of The Beatles, made his U.S. television debut at the Ed Sullivan Theater on "The Ed Sullivan Show" 45 years ago, returns to that very stage to sit down for an interview with Dave. McCartney will also perform later in the broadcast.
Besides his iconic and groundbreaking work with The Beatles, the multiple Grammy Award-winning artist, who is the most successful musician and composer of all time, has also been hailed for his work with his band, Wings, as well as for his solo projects. He most recently released the album, Electric Arguments, his third release under the name "The Fireman."
McCartney will begin an exclusive series of shows across the United States, beginning July 17 at CitiField in New York City, and then heading to Washington, D.C., Boston, Atlanta, Tulsa and winding up in Dallas on Aug. 19

I heard about it when Mark Lindsay tweeted it.

I think he should start tonite with "All My Loving" just like he did 45 1/2 years ago on the same stage.

I just caught the 6:00pm news and they had some footage of Paul atop the marquee, which will be shown on tonight's Letterman program. They showed a bit of Paul singing "Get Back", and while at first my reaction was "oh no, not THAT one again", it worked out to be very cool, because it was a nod back to the famous 1969 rooftop concert. It's a beautiful sunny summer day here today so the weather was perfect, and what was really neat was seeing some shots of people on the streets and in their apartment windows, watching the performance... just like from LET IT BE.

Got back from the David Letterman taping of Paul on the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater doing a mini half hour concert for the Letterman show which airs tonight, July 15th. On the marquee he performed 'Get Back', 'Sing The Changes', 'Coming Up', 'Band On The Run', 'Let Me Roll It', 'Helter Skelter' with a bit of 'Purple Haze' added, and ended with 'Back In The U.S.S.R.' Paul was in great voice and waved to and talked to crowd. David Letterman came out on the marquee after 'Sing The Changes' and waved to the crowd too. There was a huge crowd in the thousands watching in the streets which the police block off a bit to allow traffic to continue past the theater. It was fun to watch Paul wave at stunned bus riders as the buses passed by. I was very surprised to find out later that my niece who's taking acting classes in New York was in the crowd too and actually had a better vantage point than I did! She called me later to tell me because she knew what a huge Beatles fan I am and she said she really enjoy seeing Paul, it was very cool. I took a few pictures and some videos of the performance, but my digital camera seems to have gone on the fritz and won't download them. I hope they might open up on another computer (I hope). My niece took pictures so I hope to get some from her. In the meantime, I've linked to one video someone has already posted on YouTube. As this special appearance by Paul at the historic Ed Sullivan Theater precedes his Citi Field concerts, this was really a nice way to enjoy a late afternoon summer in New York City.

I was there tonight. Same angle too! (To the side on 53rd St by the Bank of America). Thousands of people on Broadway and hanging out of office windows. He did about 3 songs for the end of the Late Night With David Letterman show (on the Ed Sullivan Theater marquee) and then continued on "for the fans" as he said, for 35 minutes! It was electric! This is one youtube clip I found, for his opening number "Get Back". I'm glad I never caught my normal bus tonight. Regards, Beatle Bob

Just got done watching Letterman and have the following thoughts: 1. I'm getting rather distracted by the constant reminders that Paul was in The Beatles and there were repeated Beatles' references leading up to his actual appearance on the show, such as the commercials plugging Paul's appearance. Who on this Earth doesn't know the connection? In any event, mainly middle aged people watch Letterman and we all know the story; 2. I got real uncomfortable when Dave said something like, "Paul McCartney and The Beatles played in this very studio..." That always sounds to me like Diana Ross and The Supremes; 3. The interview was so-so, Paul did well with the rather tame questions by Dave. I liked the opening bit on Paul's long absence from the show and I thought that it was kind of edgy for Dave to hold up the picture of Paul and Michael and get into that topic although I am not so naive to think that Paul or his people do not clear all topics discussed and the MJ death is too topical for even Paul to avoid. Paul's responses there were honest and he gets kudos for admitting that the relationship had cooled for business reasons. 4. Playing on the marquee was absolutely fantastic, a great idea and it seemed exciting.....until Paul and the boys do a rather subdued "Get Back." Boring! 5. "Sing The Changes" sounded awesome; Paul and guys have reverb added to vocals but that is very appropriate for this song. What greatly angered me was the absolutely lame response by the majority of the crowd. Yes, some people recognized it and were dancing but from what was shown on television, the vast majority sat there like dumbasses in their Beatles' tee shirts probably wanting nothing but Beatles' tunes. Hey folks, this was an appearance by Paul McCartney and not The Beatles! These are the same assholes who run to buy beer or expel beer or just talk through and disrupt whenever Paul plays a new song in concert. I thought that it was so cool on "Sing The Changes" but those people wanted "Let It Be." 6. Right after Letterman, Craig Ferguson comes on and he says how wonderful Paul was on Letterman and then shows a picture of Angela Lansbury and says that is Paul! Ferguson is the funniest guy on late night t.v. in my opinion, he goes crazy. All in all a good appearance. These so-called Paul fans need to get off their asses and buy Electric Argument and for just once set aside Abbey Road and Band On The Run for a moment and explore Paul's other music. They might like what they hear if they only expand their Macca horizons.

I thought that it was so cool on "Sing The Changes" but those people wanted "Let It Be." I thought it was very appropriate that Paul did GET BEACK, considering he was up there like the rooftop, playing to a bunch of onlookers in the street. Plus, it was the 40th Anniversary of the rooftop concert. The crowd really got into it, as well they should. I have to disagree about SING THE CHANGES, which I thought brought the party to a screeching halt. Now, I like the song on the album, but this live version to me did not do it justice. I don't know how you can blame the audience in the streets and get "angered" and call them "dumbasses" when 99% of them were there to see "A Beatle", and not to see "Paul McCartney the Solo Musician Who Has A New Album Out". This is pretty much the same thing we always discuss regarding Paul's set list at his concerts; the simple objective facts are, the majority of the people at his shows WANT THE BEATLES. I'd say that, unlike the fans who pay to see Paul's concerts, most of these onlookers on the streets of Manhattan were just casuals who wanted to be there, and many of them probably only had a passing familiarity with GET BACK, never mind SING THE CHANGES! Many of them were probably not even bonafide "Paul fans", but rather were just interested in being there for the action at the end of a work day.

I said somewhere else that Paul did ALL MY LOVING when I had the news on, but in actuality I think what I was hearing from the other room (I was on the computer while the TV was on) was a short clip from the Ed Sullivan 1964 shows where the Beatles did the song. Yep, there you go. And I'm sure there were many others like your niece present, who may have had no need for SING THE CHANGES, as I was telling JSD.

My niece knows who the Beatles and Paul are, but I don't think she has any of their recordings in her collection unless she's listened to them from my brother. She's taking acting classes in New York and was in the area when she noticed the set up for the mini-concert and was surprised to learn it was going to be Paul McCartney. After her classes she was able to go back and she and her classmate found a choice vantage point about center near the marquee and she told me later she really enjoyed it. My niece is 20 years old and she was just thrilled to be there, knowing she was seeing one of the all-time great music legends in person. My niece clearly qualifies as a causal listener, not a hard core fan. And for her to say that seeing Paul McCartney in person was cool means a lot.

No one should complain about Dave's series of questions for Paul. He's a comic and he's certainly no Larry King Rarity for me....I stayed up late! Taped Letterman naturally for McCartney's performance....and the news report on the 11 am news --so it's a nice little though choppy video of news of the event, then THE event. I got about 4 hours of sleep. Man, I'm dragging my ass today. But it was cool to see the ENTIRE performance live last night from the streets of NYC. What an unexpected treat, especially since I couldn't get tickets to see him live at the Mets (Boo!), Citifield shows this weekend... Regards, Beatle Bob
