Ditto, and the spoken bits of The Girl Is Mine are embarrassing.

"Say Say Say" because it is damn good pop music from that era and doesn't sound dated. What a monster smash hit. I was in Recordland in Southlake Mall, Merrillville, Indiana at Thanksgiving break 1983 and I'll never forget a very young African-American kid with his grandmother in line in front of me buying this single and the kid holding the picture sleeve version in his hands happy as can be. That little kid probably didn't know who Paul McCartney was until this song but he clearly liked the song enough to have his grandmother buy it and Paul obviously has a major role in the song. I thought that was cool, a cross-over hit for Paul and Michael with even the youngsters, kids under 10. I like all three a lot. I heard "The Girl Is Mine" on radio the day after MJ died and that was the first time in a long while that I had heard the whole thing. I was impressed, it sounded pretty good. I had once cringed at the spoken part but it sounds playful. Happier times for all. I like "The Man" second best of these three. I think Michael is very good on this(as is Paul). This is a gem that I am sorry to say didn't get much airplay then or even now at MJ's death. Great poll/Thread, josh!

I'm afraid I need a "None Of The Above" option.

"The dog-gone girl is mine" may be one of the lamest lyrics-ever.
I will concede that the 5:1 mix of Say Say Say on the video collection gave me a new appreciation of Paul last no. 1 song.

joshferrell, I like :The Man" too and think that "The Man" is underrated. I personally like it better than "Say, Say, Say". I think the song has interesting spiritual tones.

I have to say I like "The Man" but probably because of the music rather than the lyrics. A great production from GM.

His last No. 1 song in the US. No More Lonely Nights and the Broadstreet soundtrack both topped the charts in the UK in the Fall of 1984. This followed the Pipes of Peace single which hit No. 1 in the UK in Jan. 1984.

Need to add it to my solo #1 collection (counting UK/USA) My bet on it going No. 1 in UK is the presence of Pink Floyd royalty... I think Spies Like Us in USA actually went into the top 10. Ouch.

I rather like 'The Man', although it's cheesy. Anyway, who is this 'man'? As a kid, I heard it as a tale of redemption, like an honest man getting out of an unjust prison sentence or something.
'Say, Say, Say' is funky and catchy, and was a huge hit. I like it, but I don't think it has transcended its time. In other words, it hasn't dated well, and its lyric is absurd. Still a nice little pop tune, though.
'The Girl Is Mine' isn't as bad as its reputation, but it is too much cheese to be safe for your health. I do like Paul's lazy vocal on it, but as someone said, the spoken parts should come with a warning label for diabetics.

Say Say Say is by far the best of the those 3, it was a monster smash because it is and still is a great pop song. It appealed beyond the Macca and Jacko fans.
The Girl Is Mine is next best, a nice piece of Jacko swing and Macca melody..
The Man is a throwaway.. the production lame and cheesy.. in fact it's just one huge chunk of cheddar.. as is most of side 2 of Pipes of Peace..
for the record No More Lonely Nights did not get to #1 in the US or the UK.. #2 in the UK and I believe #6 in the US...

His last No. 1 song in the US. I believe it was more due to the participation of the then-red-hot Icon, Michael Jackson. It would have been successful as a solo song. Paul was still on a roll then.

I believe it was more due to the participation of the then-red-hot Icon, Michael Jackson. It would have been successful as a solo song. Paul was still on a roll then. I don't think he was anymore. This was the end of 1983. He may have had a big hit with EBONY AND IVORY in early 1982, but this was a year and a half earlier and even that was a duet with someone else.
