Random Beatle-Qs that have been percolating:
1) It was reported back in the 80s or sometime that Paul had purchased the rarest Beatle recording of all – a complete (?) show at the Cavern, clearly unprofessionally recorded, but recorded nonetheless. It cost a mint back in the day and would be priceless now. Nothing of it appeared on Anthology, so it is presumed (if I understand correctly) that the quality is so bad that it’s unlistenable for most people.
Question: Has anyone else heard of this, and can confirm it exists? (If it does, why has no one ever heard it?)
2) “If You’ve Got Trouble” – the lyric is just awful, but the tune and arrangement are pretty cool, and would certainly have been welcome on Help! or Rubber Soul.
Question: Why was this particular track discarded?
3) I’m aware that Please Please Me was done as a two-track recording, and I believe that with With The Beatles Abbey Road upgraded to a four-track (do I have this right?). I also know that Sgt. Pepper was done on four-track (which is amazing).
Question: At what point did The Beatles and/or Abbey Road go beyond four-track recordings, if ever?
4) How many version are extant of “Across The Universe”? I count: 1) the original 1968 release on the rare Our World environmental compilation album; 2) the released Spectorized version on Let It Be in 1970; 3) the Anthology version; 4) the Let It Be…Naked version. I have another one on bootleg, which will be familiar to many of you.
Question: Am I correct in believing that there are 4 official versions of it? And, which one do y’all think is the most “genuine”—as in, the one closest to Lennon’s conception?
5) How many Beatles tracks are there where one (or more) members of the band do not appear at all on the track? A few that came to mind are “Yesterday”, “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” and “The Ballad of John and Yoko”, as well as probably a third of the White Album.
Question: Can anyone identify which tracks fit my prescription, esp. on the White Album? And are there any early ones (say, before ‘Yesterday’) that don’t have all four Beatles on them?
Thanks dudes.
