Since I didn't get to see Paul on his recent mini-tour in the U.S., I have been playing his live albums and whoa, paul mccartney back in the u.s. Live 2002 kicks some serious ass!
I am stunned and thrilled all at once to rediscover an album I bought, played regularly for a few months but haven't played again since at least 2005. Even then, I wasn't as excited about it as I have been these past few weeks.
This very well may be Paul's high-water live album where he pulls it all together: Paul takes the best of everything that came before and delivers the goods.
Paul is so damn energized in these recordings, a man who knows that the ghosts of John, (more recently) George and especially Linda are pushing him to his best. And yes, he is a man in love again with a woman who hadn't yet proven herself a dead-end for Macca.
Since WOA, I have never paid much attention to subsequent live recordings of "Maybe I'm Amazed" but tonight I re-discovered this one and Paul goes nuts throughout, as if he is seeking redemption from his dead wife as well as approval for his new love. I'm sitting here stunned.
The Wings material in particular is revitalized, just as I remember from the three 2002 shows I attended.
In this lull before the remasters, pull out this album and spend two hours with it. Paul's voice is fantastic and he is clearly thrilled with his then new touring band. I am knocked out by this!
I will forever feel that this is essential Macca.

I agree completely. I played this CD along with Wings Over America, Wings Last Flight (1979 tour) and Tripping The Live Fantastic in the days before his Dallas show. I especially love Hello Goodbye and Getting Better. The 2002 show was the best of the four shows I've seen him do in Dallas ('90, '02, '05 and '09).

Although I was absolutely thrilled to see Macca in 89'/'90 ( I saw him at both MSG and Texas Stadium back them), I would say all of his subsequent tours have been stronger for him vocally (which is pretty amazing). And yes, '02 was probably the high water mark.

By the time he'd arrived back in Liverpool the set list lasted just under 4 hours (no break either for Paul). He was in fine form by the banks of the Mersey. But the oddest thing was that the audience really took a while to warm up despite the avalanche of Beatles songs until "Band on the Run" .This produced the biggest reaction of the night and the Albert Dock really rocked.
I used to love 'Wings over America' as my fave Macca Live album but the 'Back in the World/US 'CDs are now top. Although he hardly plays anything from his post Wings (but pre-Anthology) period these days.
