i see there's a 90min show on PBS on Saturday (at least, in my region) called "Rain - the Beatles Experience" it dosen't describe it on my guide but i wonder if it's that long, lost documentary shot about the fabs recording their pop-tastic B-side hit "Rain". As well as a fascinating study of the group recording one of their most complex songs, there are some fantastic scenes when Paul is trying to persuade Jane to sing on the track, and dear, sweet Mo being so stoned she could'nt stop giggling which led to some hilarious antics on the steps outside that got totally out of hand when George let down Geoff Emerick's bicycle tyres! We get to see the inside of Paul's house when all four moptops go there for tea and a smoke and to watch John's favorite sit-com of the day "Meet the Wife". The shooting of the promo in Chiswick Park is also well-covered and during a break John and George perform a spinetingelingly beautiful version of Dylan's "Visions of Johanna". or maybe it's not that at all but some crappy show that isn't even worth fast-forwarding through. i have made myself sad.

Back in the 80's, I saw a live "tribute band" show by a group called Rain. I believe the tour was even titled "The Beatles' Experience". They dressed in three different "eras" of the Beatles career and had a lot of energy. As I recall, the guy who portrayed Paul was particularly convincing. Some solo material was even done at the end. I have a feeling that this is probably what P.B.S. will be showing. Too bad, because I've never seen the footage that you are describing and it sounds WAY more interesting. As far as tribute bands go, I think that "The Fab Faux" are tough to beat. They don't bother to "dress up" or anything, however the show that I witnessed really captured the SOUND of the songs live on stage very convincingly.
P.S. Welcome to the abbeyrd board billycakes ! ;D

Saw them live at Disneyland twice. The crowd couldn't get enough.

A few years ago at the On The Waterfront Festival they had a Beatle tribute band called...I think...American English. Not sure that's the name but they were very good. They played the Beatle songs that matched up with the wardrobe they were wearing. First time on stage they wore the collarless suits of the early Beatles. Then they came out dressed like the mid sixties Beatles. Then finally they came out dressed as the Hey Jude/Revolver late sixties Beatles. They did a very strong impression of the Beatles. The music was great and I enjoyed the show very much. Great job!

I'd love to see a Beatles tribute band but we don't seem to have any happening here at the moment....

A buddy of mine lives in Chicago and thinks that American English is the best thing since sliced bread. He sees them several times a year and he is not as big a Beatles' freak as I am.

American English is the Beatle tribute band Louise Harrison promotes. "Rain: The Beatles Experience" is the long-running band that did the soundtrack for the "Birth of the Beatles" movie way way way back when. I suspect that the documentary referred to here is about them.

I think that Louise plugs Liverpool Legends as I am looking at her personal signature on a Liverpool Legends' poster my brother got for me as he met her in Branson, MO.

She switched from American English. Liverpool Legends is playing in Branson and she's there.

The Fab Faux are meticulously dedicated to the music, and IMO leave the "dress up" imitators in the dust. I've always liked Will Lee's story about meeting Paul backstage at the CFNY. He knew Paul didn't like Beatles tribute bands, but confidently suggested that he would feel differently about the Faux. Paul tried to shut him down with, "I bet you don't do Tomorrow Never Knows."
Well, actually, they do. And everything else as well. Simply incredible versions of Penny Lane and Oh, Darling. They did a special anniversary performance of the Sergeant Pepper album last year at the Beacon Theatre in NYC that immediately sold out. They've also performed the White Album from beginning to end. If you love the music, you can't go wrong with the Fab Faux, because it's so obvious they love the music, too.
