I picked up the Stereo box set yesterday and so far, I have been quite amazed by the reissues' sound quality and packaging. In a word - sharp.
However, one thing I have noticed that kind of bothers me is that NOWHERE on the reissues - back of the CD case, on the actual discs, back of the booklet, etc. - does it list the ORIGINAL release date for the individual albums!
All CDs list "Digital Remaster 2009" but not one original date (1963, 1964, etc.) is listed. Not once - that I can find - does it list "Original Recording 1966", or something along those lines. I find this strange and somewhat disappointing.
While you can gather from reading the new liner notes when the individual albums were recorded and released, simply looking at the credits and copyright information gives no indication of the original release date. Although this is no big deal for long time fans who already know the original album release dates, for new Beatles fans, the packaging gives no historical dates, which is a shame. New fans are left with having to deduce the original release date from reading the liner notes or - worse - having to seek out Google or Wikipedia for the actual dates.
It's as if EMI and Apple have intentionally left out the original release dates in an effort to 'trick' new fans into believing that these albums are not as old as they actually are. Imagine the shock of a 15 year-old kid picking up one of these CDs and seeing a 1960s date - "My God - the Beatles are that old? Ewww...they're older than my parents!"
What a shame. The one flaw I can see with all of the Stereo reissues.
Of course, as I don't own the Mono box set, I can't speak for the Mono CDs. However, from what I have read, the Mono reissues are supposed to duplicate the original album packaging. So I assume that the original release dates are listed.
Does anyone have any insight into why EMI/Apple decided to not list the original release dates along with the remaster dates? Many reissues for other artists' albums list both dates. I believe the 1987 Beatles album reissues even listed the original recording dates along with the new 1987 date...
