Just wondering does anyone have an opinion on the 2004 Helter Skelter film starring Jeremy Davies as Charles Manson vs. the original 1976 film with Steve Railsback as Manson?
I think the Railsback performance was outstanding and gave me nightmares as a kid. That film is just plain scary. Railsback's performance highlights Manson's explosive evil temperment, and those evil staring eyes. He plays Manson as Satan rather than going for the exact ways of Manson. It's a dark and chilling performance. Davies' seemed to go more for Manson's exact speech and personality. It's an expert impersonation of Manson. I give the '76 movie the slight edge but both films are truly gruesome and brutal.

I didn't know that there was a remake of Helter Skelter.
Steve Railsback was amazing in the 1976 version. All the actors were good. That was a very scary movie! I subsequently read the book and that further stroked my fears.
That film strengthened my father's conviction that all hippies were drug fueled killers. Back in 1969 and 1970, I was terrified of hippies in VW vans. I'd run and hide when I saw long hairs back then. The Beatles on the Hey Jude album cover particularly frightened me. Lennon and Harrison looked particularly wicked to me as a little kid.
I'll get the new HS from Netflix so I can discuss it but how could they improve on the 1976 classic?

Nothing I've seen in any movie is spookier than the first ten minutes of the 1976 Helter Skelter film. Let us know what you think of the remake JSD if you get a chance to see it. I agree with you on the Hey Jude cover, that's why its my favorite Beatles album cover! The 2004 Helter Skelter has some good stuff about the brutal Hinman slaying and the Dennis Wilson relationship with the Manson Family, but it leaves out the Shorty Shea stuff (the ranch-hand who was killed by the Family). It also has less courtroom scenes in it. Check out Jeremy Davies acting as Manson in the bonus features on the DVD too! It's like watching the real thing. He did his homework studying for this role.
