Twenty-nine damn years ago tonight. Every year I pause on this date to briefly reflect on John's murder and mostly his life and some years are harder than others. This is a hard one for me for some reason.
The thing that really pissed me off from a fan's standpoint is that I became a Beatles' fan in September 1975 right as John was going into his househusband period. From that point until the Newsweek interview and then the release of the "(Just Like)Starting Over" single, I could count on one hand how many times I heard John mentioned in the press for something new and that was all for little things like selling cows or the full-page ad in the Times about the three angels looking over John and Yoko's shoulders.
Then John returns in an amazing blaze of glory and October through early December of 1980 were fantastic for us Beatles' fans. Then BOOM: the evening of Dec. 8, 1980 hits and so much joy, so much fun, so much meaning, so much goodwill gets torn away from us in a heartbeat. It was a giant vacuum that left a void that no amount of compilation albums or posthumous videos could ever fill.
It is dreary here in Logansport today and it is likewise dreary in my heart.

Sometimes I still can't believe that John is no longer with us. His legacy lives on but I never experienced a new John release at the time of it's release. Also, I think he had alot of great music left in him and that is the cruelty of the whole thing for John and for all his fans.
Very very sad.

Sometimes I still can't believe that John is no longer with us. His legacy lives on but I never experienced a new John release at the time of it's release. I became a big Lennon fan around 1976, so I almost didn't get to enjoy a new release myself. Luckily, I did get to experience the excitement of hearing (JUST LIKE) STARTING OVER when it was first played on the radio, and then buying the DOUBLE FANTASY album ... it was a dream come true, John being back in the business again. I'll never forget bounding into Sam Goody and searching out the LP shelves for the new DF cover. There was a young woman who was buying it, and we chatted for a moment as she excitedly said "I'll probably get into a car accident on the ride home!!" I don't know if I ever told this story (I probably did) but sometime before it was routinely available in November 1980... I think around November 15th .... a friend of mine actually had the DOUBLE FANTASY album earlier than anyone else, and he invited me to his house to hear it! I didn't have a car back then so I was living in Queens, NY, and I waited on the above-ground 'L' subway platform for a train, all excited to get to my freind's house to heard the record. In a rare moment of rebellion, I produced a little magic marker from my pocket and wrote a tiny bit of graffiti on the station's sign: "JOHN LENNON LIVES! - November 15, 1980" (or whatever the date was). I was so happy. How sadly ironic my written words would turn out to be in a few weeks, though.

‘Well he’s like a brother. I love him. Families… we certainly have our ups and downs and our quarrels. But at the end of the day when it’s all said and done I would do anything for him, I think he would do anything for me’. John discussing Paul with Dave Sholin, in the car on the way to the studio, December 8th 1980. As quoted by Dave Sholin. Attachments:
