Let the debate begin: Is 2010 the last year of the first decade of the century or the beginning of the second decade? I say it's the end of the first decade. Put up your dukes! PS Yes, I know that mathematically, every year is the either the first or last year of a 10 year period, as in 1931-1941 or 1603-1613 or 4-14 or 1717-1727 or 1055-1065

Sorry, Huck, but I agree with sayne. I was also one of the few who said the "millenium" didn't start until 2001!

The 3rd Millenium didn't start until 2001, but the decade of the 'Naughties just ended.
For example, the Sixties are those years that have the third digit as a 6. We don't say a 30 year old is in his twenties.
Now, if you want to talk about the 201st decade, then it wouldn't be until next year. That's not how the phrase is used in ordinary conversation.

It's funny how the 60s are actually the 7th decade of the century. Just like the 1900s are the 20th century and the 1700s are the 18th century. You're right. The decade of the "aughts" has ended 2000-2009, but the first decade of the century has not ended yet.

The decade of the "aughts" has ended 2000-2009, but the first decade of the century has not ended yet. I'll always prefer to call that dismal decade "The Zeroes".

I also want to go public and say that in this time of reflection and resolutions, I'm holding out an olive branch to you, Joe.

Are you doing a Paul looking at a fan in the audience hoping to get the words wrong on me ? I know what you're saying and you're right... but when people reference a deacde ie 1980's , 1990's .. it assumes 1980-89, 1990-99 ... this is only true if Year 1 AD became Year 1 at the start of Year 2 AD ..

I also want to go public and say that in this time of reflection and resolutions, I'm holding out an olive branch to you, Joe. Thanks, but I didn't even feel it was required, sayne! Either my memory is getting weaker, or we didn't have anything "serious" that went wrong between us.
