Just announced - McCartney headlining this year's Isle of Wight Festival after all.
Vectis is the old Roman name for the Isle of Wight - this is my home patch - but I shan't be going: a) tickets are an arm and a leg, and I'm not even slightly interested in any of the other artists; b) tickets are very limited in any event; c) access is a nightmare unless you're staying there (which I really wouldn't want to do); d) it will be televised, and the view and sound will be loads better than being there; e) I saw him live twice in his heyday, and I'm content with me memories, ta.

If the wind's in the right direction, I'll be able to stand outside and listen to it anyway!

Proof that I'm getting old. I thought about going to one of the concerts but then started thinking about the hassle of getting there/back etc, and thought sod it, I'll watch on TV. If he was playing in the north of England or even Birmingham I'd probably go, but don't want to have to stay over in some overpriced hotel and I've vowed not to sleep in the car any more. Sorry Paul but that's the way it goes. I'll remember him from the shows of previous tours. (I did go and see his son the other day though)

We have friends, Mary and Chris and their kids, who live about a mile from where it takes place. It disrupts a complete week each year (traffic starts getting diverted 3 or 4 days head of time, and starys diverted until the day after its over), and the weekend of the Festival is unbearable. You can't get into Newport at all, and everyone within that sort of proximity has very loud music until late at night, people pissing in their front gardens, and various other things which make life difficult. We had them staying with us over that weekend last year, just so that they had some peace and quiet. On the other hand, Mary is a Beatles fan... On the other other hand, it really is a bloody stupid place to hold one of these things. It's almost in the town, as you can see www.availablelight.cc/photo_4075109.html and it's quite opn to the general public to saunter along to the other side of the river, and listen for nothing. Hmm, I think I may feel a plan developing....

It does seem a stupid place to hold a festival. I went to the Isle Of Wight 2 years ago on a normal summer day and the roads were bad enough then. The Ferry queue must be a nightmare. I think I'd watch from over the river too if I lived near there.

You won't be able to see them from across the river because the stage faces away, but you'll definitely hear reasonably well.

I moved my daughter back from university in Southampton on the Festival Friday last year. Getting on the ferry in Southampton was fine - if you were booked, then you got your slot and queued in the marshalling yard where you were told to. But getting out of East Cowes once we were off the ferry was a nightmare - there's only one road out of East Cowes, and it goes straight to the Festival campsite! So it picks up the ferry traffic from all 3 car ferries, and also the foot passengers. Horrible.

And our Council, which has stripped our Music Service (part of the education department - kids' music lessons in schools and Saturday morning Music Centre - held, coincidentally, in the school which sits in the middle of the Festival site) of its budget of £100,000, still happens to have £100,000 to throw at the Festival for freebies, palm greasing and glad-handing.
Macca or no Macca, that irritates me somewhat (caution - British understatement at work).

Okay, what's up with Macca?! Two shows in CA then Arizona and across the land to Miami and then to Puerto Rico.
WHEN AND WHERE IS THE CHICAGO CONCERT, PAUL? Paul, Chicago is the home of President Obama and Oprah! Come and do "Sing The Changes" with the big image of Obama you flash right in the Windy City itself! It would be surreal!

I think James has a lot of potential. His voice and his playing are both excellent. He has some strong songs in his set and the band are all pretty good. I'll look forward to getting his album when he puts one out. He looked slightly less uncomfortable than he did at that David Lynch show last year that the clips were put up from, but he still looked nervous and like he'd rather be anywhere but on stage. I do feel sympathy for him in that position because I feel that way if I have to stand up in front of people and I've nothing riding on it. (whereas my bb can stand on stage in front of the most hostile audience without a qualm). I hope he can eventually get past this and be able to connect with the audience a bit more, because the crowd that was watching him was small but supportive. I think it would have done him good to start off playing guitar in a band with someone else fronting it, but I suppose he didn't really have that option. I spoke to him after the show, he came out and talked to people for a few minutes, and he was quiet, soft spoken and pleasant. I do think he has a lot to offer bu I think we will see the best of him in the studio.

Paul would be smart to do her show again once he releases a new album, if he releases one before she retires. Her Oprah Army of housewives spend money on things Oprah endorses and that could include the newest Macca album if Paul plays his cards right!

The big question on everyone's lips down here is "Will he play When I'm 64?" with the every summer... line.

(whereas my bb can stand on stage in front of the most hostile audience without a qualm). bb - best buddy. In his youth he played in bands playing his own music but for the past 20 years he's been in bands playing "The hits of the 60s &70s and today" on the pub/club circuit, and does solo pub gigs mainly doing Beatles & other 60s stuff. The band are good but they've played some really dire places in their time. I'm going with him to Glasgow, I'll let you know how it goes.
