Just got done reading THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF THE BEATLES by Sean Egan. Has some interesting articles compiled, but his critical reviews of the Beatles product is often quite bizarre, most notably his choices for a single album WHITE ALBUM: 1. "Back To USSR" 2. "Glass Onion" 3. "Obladi Oblada" 4. "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" 5. "Martha My Dear" 6. "I'm So Tired" 7. "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" 8. "I Will" 9. "Birthday" 10. "Yer Blues" 11. "Mother Nature's Son" 12. "Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey" 13. "Long Long Long" 14. "Honey Pie"
Three tracks that virtually every person I've ever seen put their single disc favorites down are not here: ("Dear Prudence", "Blackbird", and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps") plus a few others that a majority would have on their list ("Helter Skelter", "Julia", and "Cry Baby Cry"). Most surprising is that some of the ones he includes ("Honey Pie", "Why Don't We Do It In The Road", "Long Long Long") are usually among the first that people choose to cut. In fact, with this list, I can now say "Back To USSR" is the only song I have seen on every list of a single disc WHITE ALBUM that I have ever seen compiled. My conclusion: the two disc album works best because their is no agreement on what the "best songs" are. Various people like (and dislike) this album for different reasons and a single disc LP would displease most people with what was left out and/or included

Now I've seen a list without "Back To USSR"! And another one without "Dear Prudence" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"? Amazing! And I've seen one that includes my least favorite song "Revolution 1"! More proof that it needed to be two discs!!!

You are right-I think I had it cut off on the screen as I was looking at it. A few other strange thoughts from this book: 1. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was not a good song 2. "Penny Lane"/"Strawberry Fields Forever" was not a good single and deserved not to be #1 in the UK. 3. "Baby You're A Rich Man" was the weakest song ever to appear on a Beatles single. 4. REVOLVER is over-rated and not the Beatles best album. 5. "If I Needed Someone" and "It' All Too Much" are considered poor George songs while "You Like Me Too Much" is considered top flight Harrison material. The articles he compiles in the book are pretty cool and make for good reading, but Egan's own critical commentary is baffling at best and downright terrible at worst.

Those two George songs are probably in my top 25 Beatle songs.
