I would not trade Rubber Soul for Pet Sounds.
Its list of songs fit together perfectly. They are lyrically superior (In my life, nowhere man, I'm Looking Through you), and there are only three songs on Pet Sounds I really enjoy. And if you want to even the playing field, and include the singles like the Beach Boys did-We Can Work It Out and Day Tripper seal the deal.
Revolver, Pepper, The Beatles, and Abbey Road are way ahead of Pet Sounds. imo.
I do wish the Beatles albums would be given the same special edition treatment as this album.

I personally love Pet Sounds, not really hearing it through until 1986!!! (on CD).
But really, there should be no "band" comparisons. It was really a songwriting/crafting/production "contest"-not a battle of the bands.
From the band perspective, I wonder though-if the Beatles knew that it was the Wrecking Crew they were competing with, not Carl, Dennis, Al and Brian (Mike didn't play anything-just stood and pointed a lot).

I agree with your analysis, but what are the three songs you like? I'm very partial to "I Know There's An Answer."

I never appreciated The Beach Boys as a teen. They sounded kind of nerdy to me…almost like a hip version of The Mills Brothers. What did I know anyway? When I was much older, around the time The Beach Boys were reduced to a nostalgia act (1980's), a friend of mine loaned me a copy of “Surf’s Up.” I was in no way prepared for what I was about to hear. The music rolled over me like a tidal wave and when I heard “Til I Die”, I was absolutely mesmerized. Even after all of these years its impact has not diminished. It is quite simply one of the most beautiful songs I will ever hear.
After falling in love with “Surfs Up” I had to buy “Sunflower" and then that led me to "Holland" which features the remarkable "California Saga" suite. There’s a treasure trove of material that was so far ahead of its time but unfortunately it got lost as a meatier style of rock music steamrolled over everything in its sight. “Paranoid”, “All the Young Dudes” and ‘Thick as a Brick” presented something much more exciting for me in the 1970’s and I ignored The Beach Boys at my own peril.
To my ears Rubber Soul is far superior and that’s probably because I’ve been listening to it for forty years and its part of my DNA. While “Pet Sounds” never really connected with me, "Caroline No" is a song of staggering beauty that is as good as anything The Fabs ever produced.

It took me a long time to appreciate Pet Sounds but once I did it really became stunning to me. I think that it is quite moving but more subtle.
I don't like to view music like we do sport's teams. It is easy to rank teams by wins and losses in sports but there is no reason why Rubber Soul and Pet Sounds can't both be declared winners.

Hello! A new forum member here... I didn't "listen" to Pet Sounds until I was in my 40's. Then, picking up Pet Sounds: The Sessions...what a great collection! I so wish The Beatles could have left us something like that! Listening to Brian Wilson bantering with the Wrecking Crew; taking input on the orchestration; knowing that is Carol Kaye on the "Fender Bass"...an amazing insight into recording a masterpiece. Thanks for the great forum; I've learned allot!

This is a tough one. I love both!! The difference between the Beatles & The Beach Boys stops at Pet Sounds. The Beatles went on to make many Milestones(that most feel are as good or superior to Rubber Soul). Most feel that Pet Sounds is the best Beach Boys LP. After Pet Sounds the Beach Boys LPs are good but nowhere near the Beatles or Pet Sounds for that matter. The Beach Boys came back in the early 1970's with some great Lps but many were no longer listening. I mean if a Beatles LP was to be singled out as their best what would ot be? Rubber Soul..Revolver..Peppers,White Album..Abbey Road..See what I mean.

Wouldn't it be Nice, Sloop John B., God Only Knows Sloop John B. being my favorite, and second favorite Beach Boys song (Good Vibrations) Yes, they are three great tracks. I also go along with Sir Frankie Crisp. "Caroline No" is magnificent. But then, I'm primarily a Beatles fan, so I'll stick with Rubber Soul.
