The IRA affiliation that John had was a bit silly, and having Yoko (an upper-crust Japanese who likely didn't know Ireland from Glasgow) sing half the song was really pushing credibility. I also thought the title's "Luck of the Irish" pun was in bad taste and also showed John a bit out-of-touch, as he basically sang of the Irish of the 1920s, not really aware that a new generation of Irish was emerging. Throwing in the "genocide" lyric was just straining credibility further, although if you were there or have seen the "Bloody Sunday" film (which is outstanding) you might give that lyric some more credo.
Anyway, I think "John Sinclair" (the song, not the dorky Michigan guy) was the highlight of this album. Would have been a Lennon classic if not for the endless "Got to-got to-got to's" which nearly sink the song. It does have rather good lyrics, albeit simplistic.
Can somebody with high quality audio software made a version of "John Sinclair" with about 4 "got to's" each time instead the 18 or so that John (for God knows what reason) stuck in??

Saw a live clip of that song the other day from the actual Free John Sinclair show. Just Lennon on a guitar belting it out (with Jerry Rubin listlessly puttering away on a tambourine). Sounded great live.

Or came at him with repugnant body parts! ;D Or, it was JS's misinterpretation. Or, it never happened. The Sinclair quote that I paraphrased was from a tape-recorded interview. Here's Lennon's take on Sinclair from "The Ballad of John & Yoko" from the "Skywriting by Word of Mouth" book: "John Sinclair threatened to sue us, even after we helped get him out of prison! 'It ain't fair, John Sinclair.' All in all we had a few laughs and a lot of drugs." My take? Anybody who threatens to sue somebody after they helped get them out of a long prison term is a major, flaming, you-know-what hole.
