I think Tom Petty did a great job with this sensitive George song at the Concert for George but I cannot find a you-tube link for it.

We just watched several sections of the Concert the other night. You're right, "I Need You" is cool. I noticed how Tom Petty seems to be looking up a lot, as in to the sky. At least it appears that way to me.

Hmm...I Felt just the opposite. I'm a big Petty fan, but thought his version of I Ned You was awful. Well intended though.

The band sounded great, I thought Petty's vocal sounded weedy.

I enjoyed Tom's performances there, but I agree his voice was a little weedy... probably in more ways than one. (Did anyone else watch 'Runnin' Down A Dream' -- the Bogdanovich 4-hour documentary about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? It's very well done.)
I've always thought "I Need You" was one of George's better melodies. It's certainly not out of place on Help!, which might be the Beatle LP with the best melodies of them all.

For me, the concert loses momentum when Tom Petty sings this number.

I like Tom Petty a lot, so I do have to say I enjoy his performance at the Concert For George... and this includes his heartfelt version of I NEED YOU. I mean, his style is just the Tom Petty style, and that goes for everything he sings (inlcuding TAXMAN, which nobody seems to have a consistent problem with, for some odd reason). Tom and George were pals, and the Beatles were clearly influences for Petty. I think it's a lovely tribute. I'm just sayin' that you either like Petty's offbeat nasal approach to singing or you don't... but I'm not sure I understand the picking and choosing and difference when it comes to singling out I NEED YOU as some kind of misfire.

Oh I'm definitely into Petty's offbeat nasal approach, but I don't think it suited I Need You or Taxman, those perfprmances were letdowns imho. I felt the songs needed more energy in that setting.

I see -- but if Petty was a friend of George's, and if he was there to sing some George songs, wouldn't they ALL have sounded "unsuitable" to Tom's style? Or are there any George songs Petty could have sung which you felt would have worked?

I'm sure there are plenty of George songs I would have enjoyed Petty do, it's hard to imagine which ones and how they would have sounded. I think if he trued something more upbeat and put some energy into it. I'm not criticizing Petty, just dodn't like that performance...its great he showed up to share the love.
