Positive thoughts and prayers go out to anyone in the path of this deadly storm. I have CNN on right now and it looks like it might go to a Cat 4. I hope most people got out of harms way, those that didn't... stay safe.

It is now over. The surge was only half as high as feared originally. Hopefully the foolish people who disregarded the orders to evacuate are okay but that not too many federal tax dollars go into now rescuing them.

Not sure the cost in human lives, that's the important thing, but this is going to cost people billions of dollars to get things back on track. It's a tragic situation.

So far, more are confirmed dead in that horrible trainwreck near L.A. The metrotrain engineer blew through a red light and right into a freight train. They better I.D. that guy as that sounds almost deliberate. I have just a little sympathy for those with only property damage as they know paradise is often fraught with danger and I am tired of my homeowner's insurance rising when I never file any claims. I have no sympathy to those who may have been killed but had the means and time to get out but didn't because they were either too macho or wanted to protect their wine collections or whatever. I don't feel that way, of course, for those without the means or physical ability to leave. I just want hurricane season over.

So far, more are confirmed dead in that horrible trainwreck near L.A. That was about 5 miles from where I work. Interesting about fate. I'm sure many of those riders would never have thought about taking mass transit before gas prices were so high - we Southern Californian are sooooooo car happy and car needy. A dollar here and a dollar there caused people to make a change in their commuter patterns and it ends in a tragedy. Also, there was a guy in this accident who was also in the MetroLink accident a year or so a go that was cause by a botched suicide attempt. Some guy drove his car on the tracks, then chickened out, but did not move the car. He just ran and left the car to be hit by the train. Awful.

We have had some bad wrecks through the years on our "South Shore," a commuter train from Chicago to South Bend. I don't think those wrecks were as bad as this terrible wreck in CA. These folks were killed trying tosave a buck and indirectly help the environment. I read, sayne, in relation to this wreck that the man who left the gasoline laden SUV on the tracks was just convicted of murder this year.

Wow! Do you do mass transit? . . . I read, sayne, in relation to this wreck that the man who left the gasoline laden SUV on the tracks was just convicted of murder this year. No, I don't. Mass transit in Los Angeles is not as covenient as in cities with really comprehensive systems - New York, Boston, London, etc. Also, Los Angeles is sooooo spread out. The CITY of Los Angeles (not county or metropolitan area - just the city), alone is almost 500 square miles. I think you can fit the CITIES of Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York in the boundaries of the city. If one lives and works near a station, great. Very few here do. In fact, many drive miles and miles just to get to the station. For me, if I were to take mass transit to work, I would have to take a bus, then a light rail train, then a subway, then a bus. It would take me about 2 hours. I can drive it in 25-40 minutes average. Yes, you are right that that guy was found guilty of murder.
