I think "Pet Sounds" is more complex and intricate than "Rubber Soul." Now if we were comparing it with "Revolver," that'd be different. "Revolver" clearly wins. But between PS and RS, PS gets the nod, in my view.

That's a different argument. I think it is ALWAYS about the songs. I wager more people know more songs on Rubber Soul than Pet Sounds. I wager that more people, when given a title of a song would be able to sing more songs from Rubber Soul. I wager more bands cover Rubber Soul songs than Pet Sounds.

Rubber Soul has more good songs than Pet Sounds. Therefore, regardless of how "complex" either album may be, RS wins over PS. So does Revolver and SPLHCB. But PS is still my favorite Beach Boys album.

I think it's pretty evident that the songs on RS individually are better because, for the most part, they get played more (and we as Beatle fans hear them more). But there are some killer songs on PS. "God Only Knows" is a tearjerker with Carl's wonderful vocal. "Caroline No" is a masterpiece, too. "Sloop John B" is very good, as is "Wouldn't It Be Nice." Most of the other songs on PS are more obscure, though not to Beach Boys fans: "Don't Talk Put Your Head on My Shoulder," "You Still Believe In Me," "Here Today," "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times," to name some, all hold up very well, even if they're not so well known. I think the high points on RS don't match those on PS, though there are some great songs. Assuming we're talking the UK version, there's "Drive My Car," "Norwegian Wood," "Michelle," "Girl," "In My Life" and "You Won't See Me" as some of the high points. Still, though PS as a whole beats out RS.

Our ace in the hole, our secret weapon that gloriously pushes Rubber Soul past Pet Sounds is Ringo and "What Goes On!"

I like Pet Sounds ok, there are a few really good songs on there, but don't consider it special, I never got why it's so esteemed. Sloop John B typifies the album for me, I heard it a bunch in the 60's but it always sounded like filler to me.

I just played PET SOUNDS in full for the first time in my life. I really thought it was a bore, and I can't for the life of me understand what's supposed to be so great about it. Only three songs I could tolerate: "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows", and "Sloop John B". Even with those three, there are still way more other Beach Boys songs I prefer to these. And the rest of the album to me sounded like pointless tinkering around, with not one of those other unmemorable songs song being more than filler tracks.
I have found my vote for "Most Overrated Classic Album" .

I never cared much for Pet Sounds. The only songs I like are Wouldn't It Be Nice and Sloop John B. I think both of these songs are great, right up there with I Get Around and 409. The rest of the album is boring to me.

The rest of the album is boring to me. It didn't bore Paul. Not sure about John. But it inspired them to do Sgt. Pepper. Paul felt Pet Sounds topped Revolver just like Brian Wilson was inspired to do Pet Sounds because he thought Rubber Soul was the best album he'd ever heard. Healthy competition.

You're right and I get all that. But I don't know why people feel compelled to remind us that "Paul thought PET SOUNDS was great, it didn't bore him" whenever we say IT BORED US. No offense to you personally, lowbasso, but I have gotten this same reaction from other forums ever since I have said I listened to PS and found it a piece of uninteresting and instantly dismissable garbage, and the most polished turd in all of Rock History. I judge stuff based on what I think, not what Paul or John think. Paul said he didn't care for Elvis Presley's "Hard Headed Woman", but I love it.

I am glad Joe revived this Thread.
I have not been on a Beach Boy's kick for nine years. I stopped playing them completely around 2005 as I next went through a dark Rolling Stones phase, then I discovered The Avett Brothers, still the new joy of my music life, with some Springsteen and Dylan phases thrown in the mix. More recently I have rediscovered John Lennon's solo music to my soul's redemption.
Last week I played Pet Sounds and it blew me away, especially the stereo version which is not the Brian Wilson approved version! I was blown away by every song! I thought it about the best Pop music album as a whole!
I can't compare it to Beatles so I don't have to pick which is best. I just thought that it was a masterpiece that showed the genius of Brian Wilson.
Joe, I was totally unimpressed with it my first listen but it became a great car album for me in a period in 1993 or so when I was down. Yet, I completely walked away from it in 2005 or 2006 not playing it again until a week ago.
Finally, I always wonder if Brian is referring to U.S. Rubber Soul or the U.K. version? It seems that as an American he is referring to the U.S. version.

Generally I prefer stereo as long as it is mixed properly. I have yet to hear Pet Sounds in stereo because my recollection was that you had to buy the boxed set to get it. I think it is brilliant instrumentation, but truth be told it is all Wrecking Crew on instrumentals. Beatles were Beatles and occassional George Martin parts plus of course the classical musicians. There is NO comparison, but it was a competition between song crafters..

To my knowledge, Paul or John never expressed an opinion on what they thought I felt about Pet Sounds. They probably didn't care.

RUBBER SOUL has better songs than PET SOUNDS (with the exception of the dreadful "What Goes On") and I feel it is a better album as well. PET SOUNDS is good, but I think it is one of the most overrated albums in all of rock. To my mind, the album that truly does all the great stuff PET SOUNDS is proclaimed for is ODYSSEY AND ORACLE by The Zombies. Similar musical sophistication, but with more high quality songs than PET SOUNDS. Lacks the rockers of RUBBER SOUL (Drive My Car, Run For Your Life) but otherwise stacks up pretty well.
