www.142throckmortontheatre.com/event.php?eventid=1478This should be fun. The 1962 National League Champion SF Giants are my faves and Orlando Cepeda is one of the all time baseball greats. Sports journalist Bruce Macgowan is a classmate from junior high and high school.

This song from the '60s about the Dodgers by Danny Kaye, mentions Cepeda. It's a cute song about the rivalry with mentions of a lot of vintage Giants and Dodgers. It also has a lot of the charm Kaye was known for.

Steve, thanks for posting that Danny Kaye song. I remember it well! Hilarious stuff. I'm impressed that the person who put the video together found a pic of umpire Jocko Conlan.

Good Lord, I felt like I sat through a nine inning baseball game listening to that! Now Da Bears "Super Bowl Shuffle" is a real sports song! ;D I don't suspect this song gets much airplay in 2011 with Danny Kay doing the mock-Latin American accent just for Orlando Cepeda. Reminds me of the stereotypes on the old Beatles' cartoons. There also should have been a reference to the Bankruptcy Code!

JSD, I never realized the song was over 5 minutes long. I thought "Light My Fire" was the long single pioneer!

In what I thought was neat, my hometown newspaper every Saturday does the, "On this day 10, 25, 50 and 100 Years ago" article with mostly local but some national/international news. Well, 50 years ago Mr. Orlando Cepeda was on the National League All Star team representing the San Fran Giants! How topical. Of course scousette and Steve, I wasn't even born yet! Of course, it is amazing that just 100 years ago(1911) there was still a "Horse Theft Committee" in Logansport.

Good Lord, I felt like I sat through a nine inning baseball game listening to that . . . I'm glad he wasn't singing about the Schenectady Blue Jays or the Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantysiliogogogoch Welsh football/soccer team. ;D ;D ;D

I got Orlando's autograph (we're on a first name basis now) after the event. He's a great guy. He talked about his early days breaking into pro ball here in the States, reminisced about Willie Mays and Juan Marichal, how hurt he was when the Giants traded him to St Louis (but he rebounded!), and played some of his favorite tracks by Mongo Santamaria and Tito Puente. Baseball and music -- it doesn't get much better than that.

(John Roseboro?)
