Thanks Fred and Winnie. The whole situation just seems to have developed out of nowhere. Although I have heard a lot in the last few days about the deprived 'underclass', lack of role models etc. most of what's been happending is just mindless, gratuitous thuggery. Worryingly, social networking seems to have given the thugs a new-found tactical advantage over the police.
One assumes it will blow itself out at some point when the yobs become bored with their new leisure activity. I was watching footage of four lads jumping up and down on a burned-out car in Smithdown Road in Liverpool this morning. It looked mindless, but also strangely tedious - like they didn't quite know what to do next for more kicks. When the possiblity of being brought to justice starts to outweigh the diminishing adrenaline-buzz from the mindless thuggery then it will fizzle out.

This will end when the thugs start to mess with neighborhood pubs and the local lads, many of whom are hard-scrabble working lads and not college pudding wannabees or layabouts, will take things into their own hands and there will be quiet again.
That's my thought at least. When the ale is poured onto the streets in wanton waste and the pubs wrecked, the working lads will fix things as they always do.

We're already hearing about vigilante groups springing up to protect communities from the current rule of the mob. Good on them. Anyway, I hope you're all still looking forward to coming over here for the Olympics next year! I think we can guarantee you an interesting time!

Thanks Fred.
Personally speaking where I am (Brighton), there's no riots or looting at all. We're a fairly peaceful bunch down here.
I'm all for the coppers using full force against these idiots. There's no political intent behind this madness at all. Just an excuse for chavvy kids to go and loot a load of blu-rays from their nearest store.

Saying that I saw on the news yesterday one pub was burned down in Croydon! There was incredible footage going around last night of a bunch of riot police having to retreat as they were completely outnumbered by yobs. Pretty amazing.
