I've been reading about the Cubs history...this excerpt from Wiki is depressing for a Cubs fan...
The Chicago Cubs have not won a World Series championship since 1908, and have not appeared in the Fall Classic since 1945, although between their postseason appearance in 1984 and their most recent in 2008, they have made the postseason six times.
It is the longest title drought in all four of the major American professional sports leagues, which includes the NFL, NBA, NHL, as well as Major League Baseball. In fact, the Cubs' last World Series title occurred before those other three leagues even existed, and even the Cubs' last World Series appearance predates the founding of the NBA.

OK.... it's getting close to the play offs..... Can someone explain how this works and why there are wildcards.. An extra wildcard was added this year and the two wild cards have a one game play in. Many felt it was too easy for the wild card to sneak into the World Series if they steal a best of five from a strong team on a brief dip. But the BIGGEST reason is that at least in its first time run, it has kept an extra 8-12 teams in the race for post-season well into late September, keeping interest up for weaker teams, allowing for more incentive to spoilers (see Toronto-well out of it and playing out of their minds) and making stronger teams leave their best players in games for fear of having to play someone they might not want to. All of this also means for better attendance. After the play in game- the wild card winner plays the one seed in each league, while the other two division winners square off. I believe the first round is still best 3 out of 5. Then the four remaining teams square off in a best of seven for the National and American league pennants, then the best of seven WS, the home team going to the winner of the all-star game- (National League??)

I was such a huge MLB fan as a kid and teen. I loved the Chicago Cubs.
It pains me that I have grown distant from the game. As a kid I could have rattled off the answer to fabfour(even though there were no wildcards back then and just Eastern and Western Divisions in each League) but now I read Mike's post and glad that he explained it. I need to get back to baseball!
I played baseball for my high school and it is a blast to play but the problem is unless you're among the very rare to go to college for baseball or less even Minor Leagues and less yet Major Leagues, one cannot really play baseball beyond Senior League(13-15 age group) or maybe high school(to age 18).
When we men get out of high school, all that is available is slow pitch softball and sometimes fast-pitch softball. But no one just plays pick-up baseball as adults. Well, some might in the biggest cities but not in small towns and cities. Slow pitch softball is fun and drinking beer before, during and after games is a hoot. But even that is not baseball.

I can't feel sorry for Chicago. At least they've had the Bears, Bulls, and the Blackhawks. Try living in San Diego. The Padres and the Chargers have won nothing (except for an AFL championship back in 1963, but no NFL titles). No NHL team or NBA team - they lost the Rockets and the Clippers. Now, they might lose the Chargers.

Congrats Giants and their fans! Hey, it is the Cubs' turn to win a World Series! You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.... I have asked before but what are the Giants' beards for? They kind of creep me out. A preacher here in southern Indiana(a Cincy Reds fan) says the beards are in support of the Taliban! Is there rioting in SF or Oakland? I measure classy cities by how they celebrate. No rioting and destruction in Indy when we won the Super Bowl.
