RS 1.
This is actually pretty close. I'm not one that thinks RS was improved in the American incarnation, and yes, I had that version for about 20 years before I got the UK issue on CD in 1987. "The Word" and "Michelle" bog down the end of RS 1, but "Words Of Love" doesn't leave the listener buoyed by the side, either. The sequencing of VI 1 doesn't flow too well; if "Eight Days A Week" led off the side and "Kansas City" closed it--much like BFS used these songs as an opener and a closer--then I might have considered going to VI 1. But it doesn't. So I didn't.

RS 1. The songwriting outdoes the other album.

RUBBER SOUL (Side 1) for me. I loved "I've Just Seen A Face" as the opening track to this album although I've come to like "Drive My Car" just as much. Not having "Nowhere Man" does detract a bit from the strength of this side. Still it is a fairly comfortable win for RS 1. "Norwegian Wood" trumps any song on B VI. George has a much better track on RS. The rest is fairly equal. B VI may rock a bit more (though I love the groove on "The Word") but RS showed more growth in the songwriting.
RS 1 leads 6-0.
