Oh this is a killer! Yet I go with RUBBER SOUL (SIDE 2)"It's Only Love," "Girl" and "In My Life" are among my Fab faves. But B65-1 is very strong too. As a 13 or 14 year old, I really related to "I'm A Loser." This is close. The older neighbor girl, Nancy, gave me a long term loan of her Mono B65 although I had to ultimately give it back when I could buy the 1970's reissued version in stereo. Nancy was First Generation Beatles fan and her high school sweetheart was killed in the Vietnam War. Nancy did not become a hippie though so she did not have the stereotypical 1960's experience as portrayed in so many Hollywood movies. ;D She did go off to college in that turbulent era but remained one of "The Silent Majority." With no older brother or sister, I had to pick people like Nancy's brain about The Beatles. I was probably a pest which explains the long-term loan of the album! I borrowed only that album from because of "I'm A Loser." That was my first favorite strictly album cut by the Fabs.

I'll take the side that DOESN'T have "Mr. Moonlight" on it, thank you very much.

I was afraid for a moment that RS 2 wasn't going to win.A tie on the numbers. Best song In My Life.
Rubber Soul Side 2.

RS 2 I'll take the side that DOESN'T have "Mr. Moonlight" on it, thank you very much. JcS I love the Moonlight! It has some of the best singing John ever did. The harmonies are very nice too. Paul's organ break is killer.

Paul's organ break is killer. I'll agree that John's singing is great. But that organ is so cheesy-sounds like a roller rink. And I think it is played by George Martin, not Paul.

Paul's organ break is killer. Count me in as another "Mr. Moonlight" fan. John dug that kind of music. He also loved "Angel Baby" which he covered years later. Moonlight showcases a classic Lennon vocal.

This one came down to RUBBER SOUL having the best song ("In My Life") and BEATLES 65 having the weakest cut ("Mr. Moonlight") Take those two out and the sides are about equal. "I'm A Loser" and "I'm Looking Through You" match up well. Likewise "I'll Follow The Sun" and "It's Only Love". In a battle of two "darker" songs I'll give the rocking "Run For Your Life" the edge over the waltz of "Baby's In Black" but I'll take "No Reply" over "Girl" so that all balances off. "Wait" however gets the nod over "Rock And Roll Music" so I guess RUBBER SOUL (Side 2) would win even if I did remove "In My Life" and "Mr. Moonlight".
RUBBER SOUL (SIDE 2) is off to a 5-0 lead!

BEATLES 65 (SIDE 1) Close battle between these sides but Mr Moonlight is much better than It's Only Love so it gets my vote...... Oh man, I love "Mr. Moonlight" but I also love "It's Only Love!" When John put it down in Playboy, I always had the hunch that he felt that way because he was afraid people would think that he was singing about Cynthia when truth be told she inspired very little to none of his songs(other than to write mysteriously like "Norwegian Wood" so she wouldn't know he was having affairs). I have no proof of this of course but just my hunch as John gets kind of gushy about the woman in IOL("I get high when I see you go by"...etc.), when they are not fighting that is! If anything, it might have been another John song anticipating Yoko! ;D You must have to love someone passionately to have extreme emotions about them. I think John got to the point where he tolerated Cynthia unless she annoyed him.

I recall an interview where John said he hated the song because of what he called "terrible lyric". I happen to love IOL, but I do think the words are kinda weak and "Moon/June/Spoon" for John, so I'd bet that's why he just didn't like it. (Not due to any juicy secret motivation).

I had no juicy secret motivation theory. I just think John didn't want anyone to think that song was written about his then wife. Cynthia didn't arouse such passion in John by then. I think John was wrong about the lyrics too. I totally relate to those lyrics as to a woman I once loved. We fought all day but then made it up at night. I think it is a great love song and I loved it on Anthology II. It brought me back to life after hearing yet another version of "Yesterday."

That's a pretty big leap to speak for John! OK, I haven't been able to come up with the proper word(s) to describe what I mean when you arrive at these things, but recently you just called yourself "cynical"... maybe that is close enough! Anyway -- John told us what he disliked about it... the lyric. (He didn't like RUN FOR YOUR LIFE either; you think maybe it was because he felt people would think he wanted to kill Cynthia? I mean, let's take it anywhere and everywhere! ). Same here yet again, John - I love the song too, I love the ANTHOLOGY outtake as well.... but as the writer, Lennon felt it was subpar for him. As a songwriter he felt the words were poor, and I can see what he means objectively even though I like it just fine. ("I get high when I see you go by, my oh my..."??) Come on. Much as I love the song anyway, I gotta say this is kind of reaching, and rather twee.

My thought is related to John's admitted embarrassment about the lyrics. I am not trying to convince anyone of the point, not at all. People have their own theories on what "A Day In The Life" means, I just stated out-loud my thought on why John so hated IOL. I was just sharing not asserting. I assert on The JSD Postulate; not here. I don't understand you here, Joe. I think "It's Only Love" is a great song. I completely disagree with John Lennon's assessment of his own lyrics. Why is that twee of me? I can personally relate to those lyrics even though John hated them. I always found it refreshing that John knocked many of his own songs because most artists are so big-headed they would never admit that. I just think John was too hard on himself in this case. If I agreed with John I wouldn't like the song. But I love the song so it seems obvious that I would thus disagree with John.

I can understand why he felt they weren't his best. Even though they're OK with me. (I realize your hunch here was your own; I just don't get why you tend to imagine such 'controversial motives/reasons', for lack of a better term). But heck, I don't wanna detract from an absolutely captivating thread that just states album side favorites. ;D

I have to go with Beatles 65. I just like most of those songs better than the ones on RS. But then again I think Beatles For Sale is way underrated.

The lyrics are not poetry, I'll concede that but they do kind of touch a nerve with some of us. As I mentioned, I do respect John for knocking some of his own songs. Some artists would never do that. If I could have met John, I'd quote his "Dear John" lyrics to him and tell him not to be so hard on himself as to "It's Only Love!" ;D

I think John was asking himself, "Why am I be-littleing love? Love is great." He forgot he was being ironic in the lyrics. The listener is thinking, "It's love, it will do this to you every time." That's what irony is supposed to do.
I think it's one of his best songs.
