One of the reasons I guess I don't always respond with much detail is because all we're actually doing is rehashing what we've already said about certain album sides, only now within a different match.
I enjoy all of McCARTNEY II and it's a very special album of the Summer Of '80 for me, when I graduated HS. But IMAGINE is a much better album and album side in this contest, and that's about all I can say here.

Wow, JoeK. This must have been a little harder to swallow than most matches. Your McCartney II Survivor years ago is why I now play this album 200 times more than I did in what was a magical Summer of 1980! I was discovering Bruce Springsteen that summer and Blonde. I dutifully bought McC-II but played it once or twice and shelved it until JoeK's Survivor Game. I always thank you for turning me onto to much, but not all, of this album!

Do you mean Blondie the group, or blondes in general? I assume the former, since you married a red-head. ;D

This is an easy vote for IMAGINE. "Imagine", "Crippled Inside" and "Jealous Guy" are each better than the studio version of "Coming Up", the best song on this side of Mc2. MCCARTNEY II is an album that came out at a time I desperately wanted to see Paul put out a great album. I tried to rationalize that all the experimental stuff on McII did make it a great album, but it was more hope than reality. Most of it is just kind of meandering and unfocused. I really love "One Of These Days" and "A Summer Days Song" from the other side and the live "Coming Up", but overall Mc2 falls short of IMAGINE 1 by a comfortable margin.

IMAGINE, Side 1
Just imagine how how big a margin John's album side would win by if it was competing against a turkey...
oops......it is....... ;D

Imagine side 1 has some problems (Jealous Guy sees John as a pathetic groveller, It's So Hard sees John thinking he's rocking, but isn't), but nothing to compare to McCartneyII, side 1. Time to vote ... McCabe

Hardly a contest. The slightly less awful side of M2 disappears over .the horizon notwithstanding the sheer horribleness which is I Don't Want To Be A Soldier.

IMAGINE, Side 1Yep, agree with ya Vectis, no contest at all. One of John's best albums here..... With McCartney II, I like, "Coming Up" & "Waterfalls" they are favourites of mine, never been a fan of "Temporary Secretary", the other two songs, are just average....

Neither of these are that great. I don't detest "Soldier" as much as some--but I certainly wouldn't put it on a mix tape/CD. Also, IMAGINE 1 suffers from overproduction in places. MC2 1, on the other hand, is marred by its primitive approach--there is a happy medium. Still, IMAGINE 1 is a steadier listen from start to finish, and would be the side I'd choose to play more often--but not EVERY time--so it gets my vote.

MCCARTNEY II, Side 1
"Coming Up" – 7 I know it was no. 1, but I never liked the song "Temporary Secretary" – 7 weird, but not "punk" "On the Way" – 6.5 let's hit record, wing it and see what happens "Waterfalls" – 8.5 Maybe a little help on the lyrics, but still a nice tune "Nobody Knows" – 6 (see On the Way)
IMAGINE, Side 1
1. "Imagine" 10 epic 2. "Crippled Inside" okay so he copped Black Dog Blues-still a great song 8.5 3. "Jealous Guy" schmaltzy but still one of my favs 10 4. "It's So Hard" 7.5 so so attempt at blues 5. "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier" 6 captures that Plastic Ono sound more than any other song on the LP, but a long clunker to me.
No contest....next!!!!

IMAGINE, Side 1
I absolutely adore "Waterfalls" and I assert that "On the Way" is more John Lennon than most post-1971 John Lennon(the guitar but more so the highly introverted lyrics) but I love every song on Imagine-1 so I must vote for it.
I am not a fan at all of "Coming Up," whether studio or any live version. I was sure happy that Paul had a #1 hit in the Summer of 1980 in the U.S. with a live version after the disastrous singles he released from BTTE but that was it.

I don't like Coming Up or Imaginary Secretary, so IMAGINE Side 1 gets my vote.

Imagine Side 1
I agree it's not one of Paul's better albums. I like Coming Up, On the Way and Waterfalls but the other 2 are pure filler and I can't listen to them.
I like all the songs on Imagine and that includes I Don't Want to Be a Soldier but the one line in that song that has always stumped me is this one :
I , Don't Want to be a sailor mama I don't wanna fly
I don't get it, sailor and flying just don't go together, does anyone get this ?

Imagine, side 1 is one of my very favorite of all solo Beatles sides. The album that turned my favorite ex-Beatle from John to Paul. John just seemed to do it more intensely, for hard and soft songs, more honestly, and as tunefully as Paul, though Paul's music is still among my favorites.
Macca 2 side 1 may be my next-to-least favorite solo Beatles side. Anyone want to guess which album and side get that honor? This album was the reslut of too much pot, and Paul fancying the idea that he could put out a record without breaking a sweat to write and perform one. Experimental my ear.

You don't have to like the album, but it's a fact that McCARTNEY II began just an experimental project for Paul. He originally rented a machine at home just to have some fun with it and make some weird stuff to play in the car for kicks. Then he decided to put it out as his next album. IMO, it's a shame when some folks cannot enjoy offbeat stuff like this occasionally.

This album fit in nicely at the time, Ahh yeah I thought, we have M-1 in 1970, M-11 now in 1980, does this mean we'll have a M-111 in 1990......lol (maybe it was Flaming Pie?) Stars Wars and Indiana films were out, his single *Coming Up* was No.1, *Waterfalls* was getting heaps of airplay. They were great times (sad with JL at the end of 1980). I enjoyed the album alot, played it alot (*Temporary Secretary*, would get on my nerve, one day I'd like it, next day the opposite)...Probably overplayed to much at the time (especially with *One Of These Days*), and at times would depress me (scared a girl one night when I played it in the car, she thought I was weird...lol), but otherwise it was great for its time. Its amazing reading years later, how others dislike this album, LT or BTTE....Ah well.....

This is an easy choice. I'm going with John on this match. Two of Paul's songs are quite good (On the Way and Waterfalls), but I like the live version of Coming Up. John's is a classic side with two songs that are Beatles quality. OK they were written during the Beatles reign but so what. The Imagine album is John at his finest though I'm not in love with the lyrics to the title song. I like It's So Hard, but I am not a fan of "Soldier". You have to really be in a certain mood to appreciate that song, though I can appreciate the general sound of it. As for Crippled Inside, its fair to middling--kind of a throwback. That's not a criticism.

Sorry Macca but your John wins this one simply because it's a better album side.

Imagine, of course. The first 4 songs would have made a brillant EP. Ah, for those good old days.
