I'm voting for VENUS AND MARS without any doubt. I actually voted for WILD LIFE over RNR, though that one did require some thought. This one is a no brainer.

Other than the old style YGMTA and the doowoppy Magneto this is some of Paul's strongest material in the 70s. As for John, again I take points away as this is a cover album. I think this LP would have been cooler if he did it the way Paul later did Run Devil Run- mix in some similar style originals. Might have been cool for John to attempt some Spector style versions of You Can't Do That and Run For Your Life, along with maybe even Revolution. Or maybe some new rock material. V & M gets my vote.

John's version of "Stand by Me" is the only thing that can hold up against anything on Venus & Mars. Easy win for Paul & Wings.

Not that it matters, but this match is very hard for me.
Venus & Mars is such an ordinary album - it's true side 1 is better; but ye gods, we wouldn't be talking about this album if it wasn't a McCartney effort.
and ...
Rock n Roll is such an ordinary album - it's true side 1 is better; but ye gods, we wouldn't be talking about this album if it wasn't a Lennon effort.
I'm going to go with Rock n Roll though. As I write, John has no votes - and that is inconceivable on a Beatle board.

The 2004 remixed and remastered Rock 'N' Roll saved that album; it comes alive finally. It thus realizes the aspirations John had for it. Venus And Mars was Paul in his "Stadium Rock Superstar" mode and the risk taking, funky Paul McCartney I loved from McCartney to Red Rose Speedway was gone never to return. Still, Side 1 has some nice moments like "Venus And Mars," "Rock Show," "Love In Song" and "Letting Go." "Magneto" and the twee "You Gave Me the Answer" are sewer dwellers. Yet RnR-1 has "Sweet Little Sixteen" where John defiles the Chuck Berry classic. It is very bad. This is tough because John rocks hard on every other song on RnR-1. When all is said and done, I'll go with Paul because some consideration must be given for original compositions. I vote for Paul but just barely.

VENUS AND MARS, Side 1Gee, this round is like competing *Sgt Pepper* with *Beatles For Sale*.... This is Paul at his absolute best, a real rocking album, some of the tracks come very close to heavy metal (thx to Jimmy.. : Another concept album, or was Paul trying to fake one ( : . I did mention love songs as the concept for this album or was the concept only limited to the opening title track - a clever acoustic number with impressive wordgames about the meeting of two planets/two friends/two rock'n'roll heroes, as well as its lengthier and more bombastic reprise on side B. One of my favourite's is the heavy rocker *Rock Show* with some more experiments in song structure and lots of interesting sections, synth parts, hard riffage from Jimmy & Denny; the drive is simply incredible, the lyrics are also good (it's about Paul and his band going on tour), and the swinging piano/synth/guitar/booming drums coda is better (IMO)than *Helter Skelter*. *Love In Song* is definitely a luvly ballad, can't fault it, and *You Gave Me The Answer* is a retro Twenties-style Hollywood number similar to *When I'm Sixty Four* Then we have the punchy rocker *Magneto And Titanium Man*, as far as I can tell, is a retelling of a comic strip (competition with *Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite* maybe.. : And last of all we have (IMO) the best song on this side (or album).....*Letting Go*. I love this rocker, especially the first thirty seconds, the shattering intro of roaring and soaring guitars and a fascinating break where the guitars and saxes blend together reaching a magnificent climax. Wow! My favourite moment on the record........ *Enjoy*....

Side 1 I like. Side 2 things start to lag... Stand By Me is a classic cover. Nice clip too. Gotta go Paul this time...

John doesn't stand a chance here. VENUS AND MARS is an excellent Wings album, one of Paul's very best for me.
I was never that wild about the R&R album.

All of this gushing for Penis In Jars has made me realize I was a Judas to John. I could have lived with John's take on "Sweet Sixteen," telling myself it was the booze and cocaine that made him record it like that! But no, I fell for my own sentimental feelings of playing V&M in the earliest days of my Beatle fanship. I let John Ono Lennon down!

I like both of these sides, but Lennon's is a bit more of a novelty to me. The one I'd reach for to play more often--and have, over the years--is V&M 1. It starts off great, and finishes on a high note with "Letting Go." The songs in between aren't top flight, and will cost this side later in the tourney, but for now, Paul moves on.

This one is close, I think V&M starts off great all the way through "Love in Song" but then we have granny music and a boring comic book song. It ends great with Letting Go though.
Rock N' Roll isn't bad, although I've never been a fan of the "sound" of the whole album. Most here are respectable covers with the exception of "Sweet Little Sixteen" which I find beyond awful.

I'm having a tough time with this one. I played the grooves off of V&M back in the day, but tired of it and now I listen to R&R more. My instinct tells me V&M was a better album, but for the first time I'm gonna go to the numbers:
ROCK `n' ROLL, Side 1
1.Be-Bop-A-Lula 8 2.Stand by Me 10. nice job 3.Medley: Rip It Up/Ready Teddy 8 4.You Can't Catch Me 5. meh 5.Ain't That a Shame 9. good one 6.Do You Wanna Dance? 5 it's different... 7.Sweet Little Sixteen 2 poor
VENUS AND MARS, Side 1
1. Venus & Mars 8, nice but short 2. Rock Show 10, great 3. Love in Song 6 bit dull, hasn't aged well 4. You Gave Me the Answer 7 eh, another one? but its ok, without the spoken part 5. Magneto and Titanium Man 2 woof. realllllly embarrassing 6. Letting Go 5 meh, goes nowhere
OK, lets see, R&R 47, average about 6.7. V&M, 38, average 6.3
But Paul did write all of these...
I don't know. Too close for me. I'll think on it some more. Hard to compare originals to covers. I really like Rock Show, but Magneto really sucks. John did some great covers, but some not so much. Can I give a half vote to each?
Oh, what the heck, I've been tough on Paul in some threads lately. I'll pretend I'm 14 again and go with Venus and Mars, despite the points. After all, he did come to wish Ringo a happy 70th...

........Most here are respectable covers with the exception of "Sweet Little Sixteen" which I find beyond awful. I always knew that I liked you, diego! ;D I listen to a young, enthusiastic John Lennon and the other Beatles do a great cover of "Sweet Little Sixteen" on Beatles At The B.B.C. and I can only cry hearing John's slowed down, sickly sung/played SLS on R 'n' R.

Wow, re-reading your V & M-1 comments, I really like you diego! That's my feeling exactly on VM-1. The "granny" song and "boring comic book song" always bring me back to earth with this album. That and a really weak Side 2.

I see it's time for me to defend the RNR version of SWEET LITTLE SIXTEEN again. Of course it's not a "rockin' " version, but I LOVE John's vocal on this. He puts a lot of energy into it. I may like it even more than the BBC version, though both are good to me -- just different approaches to the same song.
